Jorge Gutierrez signed a 10-day contract with the Milwaukee Bucks out of the D-League and here is a scouting report on his game:

Situation: Milwaukee has gone through a tough stretch recently, as Larry Sanders is serving a 10-game suspension and Kendall Marshall is out for the season with a torn ACL. Head coach Jason Kidd decided to sign Gutierrez, who played at his alma mater (California) and spent 15 games with Kidd’s Brooklyn Nets last season. Gutierrez obviously made an impression on Kidd and he’ll hope to find another opportunity with the Bucks. The 26-year-old has 25 games of NBA experience and has played six D-League games with the Canton Charge this year.

Size/Athleticism: Gutierrez has good size for the point guard position, with a 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame. He isn’t a great athlete, with poor bounce but solid quickness, yet compensates by changing speeds effectively.

Ballhandling: Gutierrez is a strong ball handler that fends off defenders. He uses his strength to shield opponents and avoid pressure.

Shooting: This is certainly not a standout area for Gutierrez, as he’s shooting just 23.1% from three-point range in the NBA and 1-of-7 (14.3%) from deep in Canton this season. Gutierrez is shooting just 5-of-18 from 16-24 feet and won’t be a threat from distance.

Penetration: Gutierrez has scored 61.1% of his total field goals from within 8 feet in the D-League. He averages 15.2 points per game with a majority of his offense coming near the rim. Gutierrez also gets to the free throw line for 4.8 attempts per game.

Passing: This is Gutierrez’s biggest strength offensively, averaging 6.0 assists per game in Canton. He has a good understanding of where the open man will be and has no issues swinging the ball. Gutierrez can squeeze the ball into tight windows out of the pick-and-roll.

Defense: The Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, Gutierrez makes a major impact with his defensive ability. He moves his feet well and can hurt the opposing team’s offensive flow. Gutierrez is averaging 1.8 steals per game as well.

Rebounding: Gutierrez adds 5.0 rebounds per game, with 2.0 coming on the offensive end. He can crash the glass when needed.

Versatility: Gutierrez is an old-school point guard limited to that position. He played some shooting guard in college, but is a point guard in the NBA.

Final Analysis: As a classic, throwback lead guard, it’s not surprising that Kidd decided to sign Gutierrez for a 10-day deal. While not overly explosive, Gutierrez is a quality passer and defender. He’s a tough defensive asset that can run an offense. If Milwaukee needs a point guard behind Brandon Knight and Jerryd Bayless for the rest of the season, Gutierrez will have a chance to earn a year-long roster spot.
