The Charlotte Hornets had a hole on the wing with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist out for the season, so adding Courtney Lee on an expiring contract allows them to remain in the playoff contention. With Detroit adding Tobias Harris, Charlotte couldn’t afford to stand pat.

Courtney Lee for almost nothing is the perfect type of move for the Hornets. Hairston and Roberts had no future in Charlotte and the two Second Round picks aren’t much of a price either. Lee will add defense and shooting next to Nicolas Batum’s all-around play.

Most importantly, Charlotte kept all their most desirable trade pieces to make another move if one should present itself.

Grade for Hornets: A.

The Grizzlies could actually play Chris Andersen with Marc Gasol out for a while and Zach Randolph as the lone remaining viable big man on the roster. How effective Andersen will be is the question, as he’s barely played all season for Miami.

Hairston is a decent flyer to try out with Lee on the move, though there have been concerns about his character while with the Hornets. The team has also freed up minutes for Jordan Adams at shooting guard when he returns from injury.

Getting four Second Round picks of varying value and a flyer on Hairston is good return for a player who wasn’t likely part of the Memphis future. But it does beg the question, is this the start of the Grizzlies teardown?

Grade for Grizzlies: C+

The Heat were in need of a third point guard behind Goran Dragic and Beno Udrih after Tyler Johnson was lost for the season. They could do a lot worse than Brian Roberts, who is kind of an ideal third point guard. He’s steady. Nothing more, nothing less.

The real boon for Miami is the Tax savings that moving Chris Andersen for Roberts presents.

They shaved almost $2.2 million off the books. That alone is worth it to Miami to deal away a couple of Second Round picks. If the Heat can find a taker for another salary and get out of the Tax entirely, that would be a coup for a team that intends to spend big again this summer.
