Josh Akognon signed a fully guaranteed contract with Liaoning in China for the 12-13 season.
But the contract contains an out-clause to go to an NBA team, which has been exercised for Akognon to join the Dallas Mavericks on a non-guaranteed contract, a source told RealGM.
Akognon will return to Lianoning if the Mavericks decide not to keep him on their regular season roster.
Akognon is a 5-11 point guard out of Cal State Fullerton, who played in China and the D-League last season.
Free agent Jannero Pargo is in discussions with a few NBA teams as he hopes to sign a contract before training camps open up, agent Mark Bartelstein told RealGM on Thursday.
Although Pargo has a comfort level playing overseas, having spent time professionally in Russia with Dynamo Moscow and Greece with Olympiacos, Bartelstein said the goal remains to sign an NBA deal for the 12-13 season.
Pargo, 32, has played eight NBA seasons with five different teams.
Pargo averaged 5.6 points on 38.4 percent shooting from three-point range last season for the Atlanta Hawks.
Maccabi Tel Aviv released Pops Mensah-Bonsu after medical tests showed Mensah-Bonsu still hadn’t recovered from a knee injury suffered this summer with the British National Team.
Mensah-Bonsu averaged 11.5 points and 7.3 rebounds for Great Britain during the Olympic Games in London.
The Brooklyn Nets have signed free agents Stephen Dennis, James Mays, and Carleton Scott.
All three players played overseas last season. The Nets training camp roster stands at 18 players.
Dennis, a 6’6” guard, spent four years at Kutztown University. In his senior season he averaged 26.6 points per game and was named to the Division II All-American Team. After college, Dennis played for the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA D-League, where in 51 games he averaged 18.5 points, 6.9 assists and 5.6 rebounds.
Mays, a 6’9’’ forward, spent four years at Clemson University. After his senior season, he was the second overall pick by the Colorado 14ers in the 2008 NBA D-League Draft.
Scott, a 6’8” forward, played three years at the University of Notre Dame. Named the 2010 Co-Most Improved Player. After graduating in 2011, Scott went to Austria and played for the UBC Carefuel Gussing Knights.
Atlanta Hawks' head coach Larry Drew went to Israel recently to meet with and observe Maccabi Tel Aviv head coach David Blatt.
“Larry respects the international game and is enjoying the opportunity to share ideas with David Blatt,” Danny Ferry wrote in a text message. “David is a heckuva coach and I know that Larry appreciates that David has been so open. I know Larry is enjoying the opportunity to closely watch [Maccabi's] program. It is a highly respected program.”
Blatt also coach the Russian team to the Bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics.
Malcolm Thomas is in New York and will work out for the Knicks over the next two days in an effort to land the team’s final guaranteed roster spot, league sources told RealGM.
