In rebuilding USA Basketball, Jerry Colangelo's ability to get Nike on a three-year deal as a sponsor in 2005 allowed it to become a self-sufficient entity.
"The Nike relationship with the NBA had fallen apart," Colangelo said. "But I had a lot of relationships there myself. Phil Knight was a partner of mine in the baseball team in Arizona. I've known Phil Knight for so many years. Coach [George] Raveling [currently Nike's Director of International Basketball], dear friend of mind for many, many years. So the relationships were there. And it was a matter of re-establishing a relationship. But I wanted to make it clear to them, this wasn't an NBA deal. This was USA Basketball. This is our own entity and brand. And that kind of opened the door."
During the four years before the 2004 Olympics, USA Basketball had raised just $9 million and was reliant on the NBA backfilling the costs.
By 2008, USA Basketball had raised $33 million in a four-year period and raised another $35 million between 2008 and 2012.
24 Hour Fitness, American Express, Burger King, Cisco, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Gatorade, Jeep, Las Vegas Events, MetroPCS and Right Guard are all sponsors of USA Basketball along with Nike.
TORONTO - Canada Basketball general manager Steve Nash and head coach Jay Triano met with the media on Monday morning to discuss its roster ahead of their Training Camp.
They announced the training camp attendees for the 2013 Senior Men’s National Team, with Joel Anthony, Tristan Thompson, Andrew Nicholson, Cory Joseph, Kris Joseph, Myck Kabongo, Jermaine Anderson, Olu Ashaolu, Junior Cadougan, Aaron Doornekamp, Carl English, Brady Heslip, Devoe Joseph, Levon Kendall, Kyle Landry, Andrew Rautins, Philip Scrubb and Jevohn Shepherd included.
Both Kelly Olynyk and Anthony Bennett will not be on the roster due to injuries.
“We have our pool of athletes, and our pool is greater than it’s ever been”, said Triano.
“This really is the golden age of Canadian basketball,” said Nash. On Canada’s journey to Rio, he continued, “This is going to be a very tough summer for us.”
Chris Paul is leaning toward playing int he 2016 Olympics after previously indicating that he would bypass the games.
Mike Krzyzewski was expected to not return as head coach of USA Basketball, but was convinced to commit to another run.
"If it had been another coach than Coach K, I was prepared to be done," Paul said.
USA will also have Derrick Rose, Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook and Stephen Curry to pick from at point guard.
Marcus Smart returned home from the USA Basketball minicamp this week.
Smart didn’t log any minutes in Team USA’s Blue-White scrimmage, but he’s bringing home a newfound confidence in his abilities and intentions to compete at the pro level.
"I don't feel that far removed from them," Smart said of competing against the likes of Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard. "I still have a lot of work, obviously, but it's not a surprise for me now.
"I got a taste of what it feels like to play on the next level with that group of guys, and it's not as big of a surprise for me as I expected it to be."
Smart plans to take it easy for a few weeks before reporting back to campus for what he recently determined will be his final year at OSU.
"I decided to stay one more year at Oklahoma State to get myself ready for the NBA and the next level," he said. "It was kind of coming up here and playing with these guys, just getting a taste of it.
"I felt like one (more) year was good for me to stay. Staying another year (beyond his sophomore season) wouldn't really help me at all. One is fine, but I doubt another year would be as beneficial as the one year I decided to stay."
Canada Basketball has an influx of young talent in Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, Tristan Thompson and Kelly Olynyk, among others.
"The development of any country is based on the talent playing in that country," Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "Canada is bursting with talent right now."
Steve Nash is currently Canada Basketball's general manager.
"I know a lot of people look up to Steve Nash," Bennett said. "But to be honest, I don't know if there is one single guy that really changed the whole thing."
John Wall was forced to come off the bench behind Damian Lillard during Team USA’s Blue-White scrimmage on Thursday.
Wall said he is not concerned about starting.
“When I’m playing for my country, as long as I got USA across my chest, I don’t care if I’m the 12th man, as long as I’m playing,” Wall said. “When you’re out there, you have an opportunity to put that on your chest, it’s a humbling experience and all of us are so talented, the coaches fit whatever lineup that they feel is right. I mean, look at Russell Westbrook. Coming off the bench, he gave the USA a good spark, so I don’t mind that. With USA basketball, it’s different than what you would do with your own team in the NBA.”
Wall finished with 10 points, two rebounds and two assists as his Blue team lost, 128-106, to the White team.
“I just tried to be aggressive,” Wall said. “It’s kind of tough to be aggressive when you got so many talented players, so my job wasn’t to go out there to score. Just to set everybody up and run the team as much as possible. I was just coming in and being a leader, playing my role as a point guard and help my team as much as possible and just try to do the same thing that a lot of guys in the past did, that played for the Olympic team.”
Gordon Hayward is making a strong impression on Team USA coaches and teammates.
The 23-year-old Hayward is spending his second straight summer with USA basketball.
“He’s been very impressive,” said USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo. “He’s a very impressive player. He knows how to play. He’s aggressive. He can shoot the ball. He’s made a mark in both camps, last year and this year.”
Hayward has stood out with his all-around play on both ends of the floor.
“That’s what you love about things like this,” said Jazz teammate Derrick Favors. “I know how good he is. I’ve seen him do this stuff in practice every day. But it’s been funny to talk to some of these other guys and see how impressed they are with Gordon this week.”
LeBron James will not participate in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain for Team USA and is doubtful for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
James won an Olympic Gold Medal in 2008 and again in 2012.
"LeBron is going to be three years older during the next Olympics. He will have two older boys. He has a lot to endure with his family," the source told Y! Sports. "He played in three Olympics. Everyone that knows LeBron knows it's always based on a decision at that moment. But if the moment was today, the answer would be no."
James will place a higher importance on offseason rest moving forward.
Kevin Durant and Kevin Love have committed to 2014, while Russell Westbrook and James Harden are expected to be play as well.
Jerry Colangelo has not asked James if he will play in 2016.
"I don't think he will ever too old," Colangelo said. "He can be 40 and still be able to play. Think of what he might be able to accomplish in terms of legacy with one more medal.
"We'll cross that bridge later."
Kevin Durant and Kevin Love have confirmed that they will play in next year's FIBA World Cup in Spain.
"I told Kevin (Durant) yesterday I was committed," Love said. "He committed last night to (Coach K) and the team, so it's just a cool thing."
Jerry Colangelo told Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! that he hasn't asked LeBron James to play in the event and doesn't expect him to participate, but will ask for the Olympics in 2016.
