Jalen Brunson 'High On List' For Team USA Olympics Roster

Mar 19, 2024 10:08 AM

Steve Kerr said Team USA will consider Jalen Brunson for their roster this summer for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Brunson is part of a 41-player pool that will be cut down to 12 before the Olympics.

“There’s a reason he’s on our list. Because he’s a great, great player and high character, a leader,” Kerr said. “He’s everything you want as a player. He’s high on our list and he’s definitely somebody we’re considering.”

Brunson played for the United States in the FIBA World Cup in 2023.

Most Olympics Roster Spots Already Targeted For Team USA

Feb 29, 2024 8:16 AM

Team USA has ramped up the selection process for this summer's Olympics in Paris. There are 11 players that the United States are counting on playing or are in strong consideration for a roster spot. The initial 11 are:

  • Bam Adebayo - Miami Heat
  • Devin Booker - Phoenix Suns
  • Stephen Curry - Golden State Warriors
  • Anthony Davis - Los Angeles Lakers
  • Kevin Durant - Phoenix Suns
  • Anthony Edwards - Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Joel Embiid - Philadelphia 76ers
  • Tyrese Haliburton - Indiana Pacers
  • Jrue Holiday - Boston Celtics
  • LeBron James - Los Angeles Lakers
  • Jayson Tatum - Boston Celtics

None of these players are considered absolute locks as of yet. But all 11 are under strong consideration and have mentioned interest in representing Team USA this summer, provided they are healthy enough to play.

Of that group, Booker, Curry, Durant, Embiid, Holiday, James and Tatum are considered to be the United States core group. Edwards and Haliburton are being considered after strong play at last summer's FIBA World Cup. Adebayo and Davis are garnering interest for additional frontcourt depth around Embiid.

Team USA Counting On Joel Embiid For Olympics

Feb 29, 2024 8:02 AM

Despite Joel Embiid still recovering from surgery to address a torn meniscus, Team USA is counting on the big man for this summer's Olympics in Paris. Embiid is still committed to playing in the games as well.

Embiid chose to represent the United States on the national team level this past fall. Embiid picked the United States over France and his native Cameroon, both of whom he was also eligible to play for.

The Philadelphia 76ers star had surgery in in early February to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The Sixers are hopeful that Embiid will return in late March. If he can return and stay healthy through the playoffs, that should open the door for Embiid to join Team USA this summer.

LeBron James Remains Committed To Team USA For 2024 Olympics

Feb 18, 2024 7:11 PM

LeBron James said he's unsure how many NBA seasons he'll continue to play for. However, James did confirm he's committed to Team USA for this summer's 2024 Paris Olympics, provided he's healthy enough to play.

"I told myself before the season when I committed to being a part of the Olympic team, obviously it was all predicated on my health," James said. "As it stands right now, I am healthy enough to be on the team and perform at a level that I knew I could perform at."

James last played for Team USA at the 2012 Olympics in London. The United States went undefeated in those Games, capped off by beating Spain in the gold medal game.

Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards Want To Play In Olympics

Nov 6, 2023 8:45 AM

Tyrese Haliburton and Anthony Edwards were two of the leaders of a young United States team at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Haliburton said that experience was enough that both young guards want to continue to play for Team USA moving forward.

When asked how he felt about American-born superstars saying they wanted spots on Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Haliburton understood. Even though news that those players want to play this coming summer broke before Team USA was even home from the World Cup, Haliburton said that he and Edwards want to play for their country again.

"We all saw when we landed and kind of went our separate ways. And never really talked about it. I just know a lot of that group that was together, especially like me and Ant (Anthony Edwards), us two being two of the younger dudes there, we know that we both want to play for USA moving forward and kind of help, you know, the torch be passed.," Haliburton said. "And it looks like this upcoming year is going to be, you know, the big guys want to play, and a lot of these guys probably want this to be their last run. But I think that me and Ant, we both feel like we were deserving to be on the team, and we would love to be on the team. I don’t even have to ask him, I already know. But it’s not up for us to decide. We’ve got to do what we can. We know we want to be a part of that — continuing what USA does."

Steve Kerr Will Step Down As Team USA Coach After Olympics

Nov 6, 2023 8:27 AM

Steve Kerr intends to step down as the coach of the United States Men's Basketball team after the 2024 Paris Olympics. Kerr told The Athletic that his run leading Team USA would end after next summer's games.

“No,” Kerr said bluntly when asked if he would coach Team USA after the Paris Games. “To me, it’s a two-year; it’s a cycle. Pop coached a World Cup and the Olympics, now it’s my turn to pass the baton. I think that’s kind of how it should be. Frankly, it’s a huge commitment too. I guess I think it was different the last go-around with Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski) and Jerry (Colangelo), when they were really establishing this culture and this system where guys had to commit for a couple years. Made sense for Coach K to stay on. But I think where we are now, one cycle and you move on.”

Many NBA stars have expressed interest in playing for Team USA at the Olympics. Kerr said that roster conversations will start in the coming months.

“That conversation is coming over the next couple of months,” Kerr said. “We’d like to have a roster set sooner rather than later. We don’t have a date, but, you know, obviously, we don’t want to leave guys in limbo.

You want everybody excited about the prospect (of playing for Team USA); that’s the first sign of, hey, we’re taking this really seriously. A lot of guys are dying to play. Obviously, Grant has to lead the way in terms of building our strategy, and we haven’t made any decisions,” Kerr continued. “It’s highly likely that guys who want to play may not be … whether it’s established guys or guys who have been with us and guys who just played and played really well this last go-around, no matter how you slice it, you can only take 12, so it’s very, very difficult, and it’s a painful process because, you know, you get really attached to guys.

“This last group was so wonderful. In a lot of ways, I wanted to win the gold and just run it back.”

Team USA Aggressively Pursuing Jrue Holiday To Play In 2024 Olympics

Oct 8, 2023 5:23 PM

Team USA is aggressively pursuing Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday to play in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Holiday was part of the United States team that won the gold medal at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

In six games at the Tokyo Olympics, Holiday averaged 11.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.7 steals in 26 minutes per game. Following those Olympics, USA Basketball officials described Holiday as "beloved" by the program.

Several NBA superstars have expressed an interest in playing in the Paris Olympics next summer. Joel Embiid recently committed to Team USA over Cameroon and France for the 2024 Olympics.
