Barnes Will Let Loss Heal Before Making NBA Decision

Mar 31, 2011 10:36 AM

Shirley Barnes told The Daily Tar Heel that her son has goals that he wants to fulfill.

The North Carolina freshman forward said after losing 76-69 to Kentucky on Sunday in the Elite Eight that he felt just like he did three years ago, when a last-second shot gave Iowa’s Marshalltown the 51-50 win against Barnes-led Ames in the state playoffs when he was a sophomore.

“That hurt for three months,” his mom, Shirley Barnes, said on Tuesday. “And that was the last time he lost. He has goals and I think he wants to fulfill those goals.”

When asked if he had played his final game in a North Carolina uniform, Barnes gave no indication which way he was leaning, only that he was living in the moment that visibly consumed him.

“I’m not thinking about the NBA,” he said.

Shirley Barnes said when the time is right, her son will make his decision.

“Harrison needs to heal from this loss,” she said. “We haven’t really talked about it, honestly. It’s not pressing to us. It’s what it is.”

Irving Will Take Time Making NBA Decision

Mar 31, 2011 10:31 AM

Duke guard Kyrie Irving is projected as the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft if he decides to leave school early.

This weekend, the 19-year-old Irving will travel home to New Jersey to discuss his options with his family.

But no one should expect a quick answer.

"Right now, we're going to do our due diligence and privately discuss it as a family," Drederick Irving, Kyrie's father, said Wednesday. "It could be a month or it could be a week. It's not going to be quickly."

Irving said after the Arizona game that the decision remained uncertain. On Wednesday, his father echoed those comments, calling this the biggest decision of Kyrie's life.

"Right now," Drederick Irving said, "Kyrie's focus is on being a student and doing well in the classroom."

Early Group Workout Of Potential Draftees Being Planned

Mar 31, 2011 1:39 AM

An unprecedented group workout is being planned for the weekend of April 29 in New Jersey which could dramatically alter the landscape of this year's draft class, particularly in regard to how underclassmen are able to “test the waters” when deciding whether or not to turn pro.

The workout would occur between the deadline set by the NBA for underclassmen to declare for the draft (April 24) and the deadline set by the NCAA for underclassmen to withdraw from the draft without losing their college eligibility (May 8).

Still awaiting approval from the NBA League office, the workout is for draft-eligible prospects at which all 30 NBA teams can attend. The New Jersey Nets, in conjunction with the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks, are hoping to host this event at their practice facility in East Rutherford.

Ideally this workout will feature as many top draft prospects as are willing to attend—not just underclassmen who are “testing the waters,” but also seniors and international players. Measurements and athletic, combine-style testing will also likely be conducted.

Self: Lockout Could Stunt Draftees’ Development

Mar 30, 2011 10:28 AM

Kansas coach Bill Self said that the near certainty of an NBA lockout creates a lot of uncertainty for potential draft picks.

Getting a first contract is one thing. Getting the second one three years later is where the real money is made.

“From a common-sense standpoint, not that I have much, but if there is a lockout and the season doesn’t start until February or whenever it would be, it’s hard for these young kids to go in when there’s no training camp and there’s no practice time, to show they need to be playing in games when the playoffs are only three months away,” Self said. “It could be a lost season for some of those guys because there’s not going to be an opportunity to grow and learn and play through mistakes when you’re playing five games a week and you’ve got to win.”

As many as four Jayhawk players have legitimate decisions to make about whether to return to school for the 2011-12 season or jump to the NBA.

Maryland's Jordan Wiliams Entering the Draft

Mar 29, 2011 6:24 PM

Maryland bigman Jordan Williams is entering his name in the NBA draft, according to his father Leon Williams.

"Jordan is testing the waters... but nothing is official, he is considering it but no decision has been made on him staying in the draft," his father said.

While it is believed that he will ultimately leave his name in the draft, Williams is leaving his options open at the moment and seeing where he is likely to be taken before making the final decision.

NBA Execs Anticipate Strong European Influence In Draft

Mar 29, 2011 4:14 PM

The number of European players in the NBA has leveled out in recent years, but with an underwhelming talent pool in the United States, the European influence in the upcoming draft could be the biggest overseas rush for lottery teams in five years, maybe longer, notes NBA.com’s Scott Howard-Cooper.

Three imports are tracking to the lottery while a fourth, who is all but a new arrival, could be the earliest off the board in a little less than three months when the draft is held in Newark, N.J.

"It isn't that the international kids are so dominant as much as it's an opportunity for them with a weaker college crop from the U.S.," one general manager confirmed.

Four are certain for the first round if they stay in the pool: Donatas Montiejunas, Jan Vesely, Jonas Valanciunas and Enes Kanter.
