Suns Explore Trade For Josh Smith

Jan 31, 2013 5:12 PM

The Phoenix Suns have begun pursuing Josh Smith, according to multiple sources.

The Suns have held preliminary trade talks with the Atlanta Hawks and will continue their pursuit into the offseason should they be unable to execute a trade before the deadline.

The Suns would likely build their offer for Smith around Marcin Gortat.

Phoenix could sign Smith to a new contract in the offseason while retaining enough cap space for a second big contract free agent.

Josh Smith Seeks Maximum Level Contract

Jan 26, 2013 11:11 AM

Josh Smith believes he deserves a maximum-level extension.

“I feel like I’m a max player,” Smith said. “I feel I bring a lot to the table. I have a lot of versatility. For what I do and what I give this ball club, I feel like I’m worth it.”

In the summer of 2010 the Hawks signed Joe Johnson to a six-year, $124 million contract. Johnson then had his worst season since joining the team in 2005.

The Hawks will be able to offer Smith a five-year deal worth about $94 million.

Smith again: “There shouldn’t be any hesitation. I’m Josh Smith, I’m not anybody else. I ‘m not Michael Jordan, I’m not LeBron James, I’m not Brook Lopez. I’m Josh Smith. You can’t look at what might’ve happened with another person. Let’s say Joe. You can’t say, ‘I’m skeptical of giving another person that’ because of whatever they feel like happened."

Larry Drew Trying Not To Focus On Job Security

Jan 24, 2013 10:29 AM

Larry Drew is in the final season of his deal with the Atlanta Hawks and has posted a 4-8 record since being named the Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for December.

Danny Ferry has said that the Hawks will reevaluate the siutation following his first year with the Hawks.

“I made up my mind going into the season that my focus was just to do the best I can,” Drew said. “The normal thing would be to look over your shoulder but I made up my mind, given my situation, that I’m just going to go out and coach every game. Just do what I can. If it works out, it works out. If it does not, it does not. I’ve been in constant talks with my agent about everything. The way we are looking at it is, we’ll just see what our options are at the end.”
