Kevin Love Visits Boston, Declines To Discuss Potential Connection To Celtics

Jun 1, 2014 7:12 AM

Kevin Love is visiting Boston this weekend, hanging out at bars near TD Garden, fraternizing with New England Patriots players and walking the streets of the city.

Love took a picture with a Harvard graduate on Saturday that went viral on the Internet. He is also expected to attend the Red Sox game on Sunday.

Love, 25, has one more season left on his contract and his representatives have reportedly told the Minnesota Timberwolves their desire for a trade. The Boston Celtics are believed to be a suitor for Love.

When approached at a local hotel, Love said, “I’m sorry man, I can’t do nothing [in terms of talking], I can’t.”

Love averaged 26.1 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 4.4 assists this season. He said during NBA All-Star weekend that he was intrigued by Boston, impressed with Brad Stevens but was unfamiliar with the city.

“I’ve never really spent much time in Boston. I don’t know it too well,” Love said in February. “But I think as far as playing there, we love competing against those guys. I think they have a great coach and they have a ton of youngsters that are up-and-comers.

“Boston is a great city. I’m sure free agents would love to go there, especially with Stevens as a coach. He’s a guy that can win basketball games. He gets guys to play for him. They’ve been having good success there, even in his first year, and he has a lot of young players. The coach has a lot to do with it, but yeah, Boston is a great place.”

Source: Kevin Love Respects Ainge, History Of Celtics

May 21, 2014 2:23 PM

For many of the teams interested in trading for Kevin Love, the high cost of acquiring him means receiving assurances that he will sign a long-term deal with the club.

A source close to Love told Comcast analyst Tim Welsh that the three-time All-star, "wants to play for an organization that's going to be a winning organization; not necessarily I have to go to a championship team now, but a team that's going to be built to move in that direction. Maybe it'll take a couple years. That's OK. But he needs a change from Minnesota."

The Golden State Warriors and Chicago Bulls have been mentioned as Love's preferred destinations.

"He (Love) is not one of those guys that's saying, "I want to go to Miami. I want to go to L.A.," the hype cities," Welsh said. "Now would he prefer L.A.? His girlfriend lives there. She's an actress. He went to college there (at UCLA). He was born there."

Welsh added, "but he's a professional. He wants to go where there's the best opportunity for him which would be in a winning organization and he respects the history of the Celtics.

"He respects (Celtics president of basketball operations) Danny Ainge," Welsh said. "He's already built it once. If he (Ainge) can sell him, 'here's the plan for the future,' he's open to it."

Love Trade Interest Coming From Same Teams As Garnett In 2007

May 19, 2014 2:08 PM

History is repeating itself in the form of the Minnesota Timberwolves trading away a perennial All-Star power forward named Kevin.

In 2007, the Wolves traded away Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics. The Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Chicago Bulls were the teams to be closely rumored to discussing a trade with the Wolves.

In 2014, the Wolves appear likely to trade away Kevin Love. The parties likely to be involved are a virtual repeat of those 2007 trade discussions. The Celtics, Warriors, Lakers, Suns and Bulls have all been mentioned as interested parties. The Houston Rockets have also been added to the mix in these discussions.

The New York Knicks were also interested in Garnett back in 2007, but like their interest in Love this time around, they don't appear to have enough trade assets to become a realistic partner.

Wolves Ready To Examine Kevin Love Trades For First Time

May 18, 2014 3:05 PM

The Minnesota Timberwolves are under pressure to begin consider trade scenarios for Kevin Love, according to sources.

Love is anxious to exercise his Early Termination Option in the summer of 2015 to leave as a free agent.

"For the first time, [Flip Saunders] sounds like looking at deals for [Love] is an option," one rival executive told Yahoo Sports.

The Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns are among the teams determined to make a serious run at Love in trade discussions.

The Celtics and Lakers will make high-lottery picks in the 2014 NBA Draft available in their offers for Love.

No team, however, is likely to trade for Love without an assurance that he'll commit to a five-year, $100 million max contract.

There has been a belief that Love would seek a big market such as Los Angeles or New York, but he's open to deals in markets in which he can be part of an immediate contender.

The Houston Rockets are also planning an aggressive pursuit for Love. Kevin McHale has a strong bond with Love.

But Saunders wants to convince Love to reconsider before looking at trades.

ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the Warriors and Chicago Bulls are the destinations that are most appealing to Love.

Ainge: Rondo Being 'More Available Than Ever' Just Speculation

May 16, 2014 8:41 AM

Danny Ainge analyzed the Boston Celtics' status with Rajon Rondo and said the report that the New York Knicks turned down a trade for Rondo last summer is “maybe the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever heard.”

Ainge again dismissed talk of Rondo's availability.

"That’s all speculation,” Ainge said. “Those aren’t facts. People don’t know that, so it’s just people speculating on Rondo’s free agency next summer. That’s all that you’re hearing. You’re not hearing any facts from anybody. Those conversations haven’t even been discussed, so that’s just speculation.

“We love Rondo, and Rondo loves us. We don’t feel like there’s pressure that we have to do something or there’s some sort of deadline that something has to get done by. You know, sure Rondo has to see progress and Rondo has to believe that we’re going to be contenders and be in the picture and have something.

"But that’s an ongoing thing. I mean, we feel that way with everybody.”

Mannix: Darren Erman Was Victim Of Hatchet Job

May 13, 2014 11:29 AM

Darren Erman was fired by the Golden State Warriors as assistant coach in early April for a violation of company policy as he secretly recorded conversations between Mark Jackson and other coaches.

"What happened out there was, in my opinion, a total hatchet job for Darren Erman," said Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated. "Darren has been one of the most respected assistants in the NBA for a long time. Did he tape a conversation when he thought some of the coaches were bad mouthing him to other players? Sure. Was he a shill for management? Absolutely not.

"Mark Jackson... was threatened by the work Darren Erman was putting in, the type of hours he put in as assistant coach. You have to have a certain level of understanding if you are a head coach of your own limitations. Doc Rivers had that with (Tom) Thibodeau in Boston. (Larry) Bird had that with (Rick) Carlisle and (Dick) Harter). Mark Jackson never had that with Darren Erman.

"What happened to (Erman) subsequently, the fact that Doc Rivers immediately tried to hire him as an assistant coach, the fact that the Celtics immediately scooped him up as a Director of Scouting speaks to the level of respect around the league have for Darren and how they don't believe any of the stuff coming out about him from Golden State.

Ainge: NBA Draft Combine 'Not As Informative As It Used To Be'

May 11, 2014 2:30 PM

The Boston Celtics will head into the Chicago NBA draft combne with their highest choice since 2007.

Danny Ainge does not believe the combine is as useful to executives and coaches as it was in past years.

“It’s just not as informative as it used to be,” Ainge said. “You’re not going to see people playing 5-on-5 anymore. A lot of players aren’t going to work out at this, the way it goes right now.”

Ainge added he also has not learned much from the interviews with prospects.

“Every year is a little different,” he said. “It almost seems like it’s become a status thing with the way it is right now. It’s like some players are saying, ‘I don’t have to work out there, so I won’t.’

“So you’re probably not going to be able to tell much more about the top players in Chicago, unless they show up completely out of shape. But I like the kids who show up and do the work. I just like the kids who have a love for the game and show up with a desire to show that to people.

“We’re dealing with a lot of young kids here, so there’s the potential to learn something new every time. In Chicago you don’t learn all that much, other than what they’ve been doing in their conditioning programs since the season ended.”

Rockets Expected To Check In On Rajon Rondo's Availability

May 4, 2014 11:23 AM

The Houston Rockets are expected to pursue a trade for Rajon Rondo again this offseason.

Daryl Morey checked in with the Celtics on Rondo at the February deadline.

Rondo seems like an odd fit for the Rockets since he operates with the ball in his hands and isn't a particularly skilled perimeter shooter.
