GMs Expect Russell Westbrook To Be Traded Before Start Of Season

Jul 13, 2016 1:04 PM

The Oklahoma City Thunder have a monumental decision to make between now and the trade deadline ahead of Russell Westbrook's 2017 free agency.

"I don't think anybody knows for certain what Russell Westbrook wants to do or intends to next summer," said Beck. "But that said, let's just say there's a very strong suspicion, a strong belief among rival GMs that Russell Westbrook is not intending to stay and that he would leave next summer when he hits free agency. Because of that, the logical next step for Sam Presti, who is always ahead of the curve on these things, will look to trade him. I don't know that this is happening at this point."

The Thunder have a history of being proactive with their personnel moves such as trading away James Harden, Reggie Jackson and Serge Ibaka.

"What I'm hearing here in Las Vegas from some GMs is that not only do they think Westbrook will be traded but it will be sooner rather than later. Probably before the season starts and the most likely destination right now is the Boston Celtics."

The Celtics are capable of making an offer to the Thunder without completely compromising their core.

Al Horford Had No Issue With Dwight Howard, Atlanta's Fans

Jul 12, 2016 10:19 AM

Al Horford said he had no plans with the fans in Atlanta and was unhappy with his father suggesting that was a possible reason for him signing with the Boston Celtics.

"That made me really upset," he said. "I was angry when I heard about that because I never felt that way. I've been here a long time. I've actually gotten to know a lot of our fans, a lot of our season-ticket holders with the Hawks. They've always been great to me. I've always been very content and happy with the way they've treated me and my family.

"Parents are sometimes a little more passionate about their sons and daughters. I can relate because I have a son now. So my dad, with him, sometimes he would come to the games and get frustration. His frustrations don't reflect on me with the fan base."

The other issue Horford cleared up was the possibility of playing with Dwight Howard as members of the Atlanta Hawks.

"No, no, no. Not at all. I don't have a problem with Dwight at all," Horford told the Journal-Constitution. "I think that he is a great player and he has a lot of ability and a lot of potential. It has nothing to do with not wanting to play with Dwight. I don't know if you remember but there was a time when I wanted to play power forward. With a guy like him, that would have been easier. It had nothing to do with Dwight. He's a good guy."

Horford's first option as free agency began was to re-sign with Atlanta.

"I started to see that when the team stepped up and did what they had to do, I didn't think we were on the same page," he told the newspaper. "That's when I was forced to start looking at other options."

Jared Sullinger Receiving Tepid RFA Interest, Could Return To Celtics On One-Year Deal

Jul 9, 2016 7:11 PM

With Jared Sullinger receiving tepid interest in the restricted free agency market, he could re-sign with the Boston Celtics on a one-year deal for the qualifying offer.

Sullinger averaged 10.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 23.6 minutes per game. Sullinger started 73 games and played in 81.

Sullinger had a PER of 16.7 though that number dropped to 5.6 as he struggled in the playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks.

"There hasn't really been a lot of interest at this point in Jared Sullinger. A lot has to do with RFA tag," said Mannix.

Danny Ainge Doesn't Believe Acquiring Another Star Would Have Helped Sign Durant

Jul 8, 2016 12:22 PM

Danny Ainge was asked if he could have made a trade for a key player who could have convinced Kevin Durant to sign with the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics held discussions with the Chicago Bulls on a Jimmy Butler trade.

“You know, I thought about that before and I’ve thought about that after, and I really don’t think so — shy of a couple of moves that I couldn’t do,” Ainge said. “But in deals that we could have done that we refused to do, I don’t think that would have mattered for this. I think that KD really likes our players.”

Boston has an attractive roster but couldn't compete with the Golden State Warriors.

“Under any circumstances,” he said, “we weren’t going to be able to produce Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.”

Ainge was hopeful of Al Horford helping Boston's chances.

“I got the impression that they knew something before we did,” said Ainge. “I know that they had some conversation. They were very familiar with what Horford was choosing between. It seemed to me in the presentation like Al and KD had been discussing their plans together.”

Ainge likes the direction of the Celtics despite missing out on Durant.

“I feel like we’re in good position,” he said. “I feel like we still have all of our pieces. We’re excited about Jaylen (Brown, the C’s top draft pick). We’re excited about what’s going on for us in free agency (Horford). And we’re continuing to develop guys that I think aren’t even in their prime of their career yet that are continuing to get better.

“And we still have a lot of opportunities. You know, we didn’t probably have as many transactions as we wanted. We had offers for the third pick in the draft and some of our young players in this process, and we just didn’t want to do it. We just thought it was too much. We like those things too much, so we’re going to move forward, and we’re excited about the direction that we’re headed.”
