Cavs Were On 'Pins And Needles' About Celtics Trading For Either George, Butler

Feb 24, 2017 4:26 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers were monitoring the Boston Celtics efforts to acquire either Paul George or Jimmy Butler at the deadline.

The Celtics are already a top contender in the Eastern Conference, but acquiring either of those star wings would make them even more competitive in a series against the Cavaliers. Both George and Butler have played LeBron James well in the playoffs.

"The Cavs were on pins and needles yesterday about the Celtics getting Paul George or Jimmy Butler," said Windhorst on Zach Lowe's podcast. "Pins and needles. That's why I'm saying. Let's put it this way: if on day one next year it's Gordon Hayward, Al Horford, and Isaiah Thomas, the Cavs will be like 'okay, that's going to be a challenge.' If it's Isaiah Thomas, Al Horford and Jimmy Butler, the Cavs might be out there saying 'we may have to trade Kevin Love.'"

The Celtics were weighing whether to package a combination of draft assets and existing players in a deal. Danny Ainge can revisit those talks in June.

Celtics Finally Discuss Nets' Pick With Pacers On Paul George

Feb 23, 2017 1:17 PM

The Boston Celtics have finally allowed their pick from the Brooklyn Nets to be included in the conversation with the Indiana Pacers on Paul George.

The Celtics own swap rights for the Nets' first round pick in 2017 and their first rounder outright in 2018.

Boston has been searching for a superstar to add to their roster, yet has been reluctant to include any of Brooklyn's picks in talks.

The Celtics have also been interested in Jimmy Butler.

According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, the Pacers have been engaged with other teams to potentially clear roster spots that could be related to their talks with Boston on Paul George.

Celtics Continue To Resist Trading Both Nets' Pick, Multiple Rotation Players For Star

Feb 23, 2017 12:59 AM

The Boston Celtics are in an almost unprecedented position where they will have one of the top picks in the draft while also being one of the top contenders in the Eastern Conference.

The Celtics would like to upgrade their roster with a true superstar but it's difficult for them to part with not only a high draft pick but also multiple talented players on their roster.

"The sense I've also gotten is that there are factions in it that are like, 'Listen, we're giving you what should be the No. 1 pick and you are still asking us for 2, 3, 4 rotation players in return. What's the basis behind that? What's the direction are you still trying to go?

"They look at the first overall pick as a valued asset. 'Listen, you're not getting anything better than this on the open market, especially in this draft.'"

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Boston also must consider how Isaiah Thomas will react to a future franchise point guard in the draft in someone like Markelle Fultz or Lonzo Ball.

Charania also reports that the sense he's getting is the Celtics are comfortable seeing what trades are out there after the lottery determines it's actual number.

Jae Crowder Believed To Be Sticking Point In Boston's Talks With Bulls For Jimmy Butler

Feb 22, 2017 11:51 AM

The Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls continue to discuss a Jimmy Butler trade.

"I think the Jimmy Butler stuff is real," said Aldridge. "They have been trying to get Jimmy Butler. He doesn't want to give up Jae Crowder. That's the main sticking point there and he doesn't want to give up Jae Crowder in a deal and that's the guy the Bulls are insisting on right now in any package for Butler.

"The picks will work themselves out. Boston has about 600 first round picks in the next five years, so they'll make it work. That part I'm not worried about. I think it really comes down to Crowder. In terms of real tangible players, I think Danny would like to go into the playoffs with Smart, Bradley, Crowder defensively along with Butler, Horford, Thomas offensively. I think he feels like that's the only way they'll be able to complete with a team like Cleveland.

"Chicago, I think rightly, is saying, 'If you want our best player, we're not going to just do it for picks. We're not going to take guys you aren't going to keep on your roster. We want a guy that is going to be able to grow with us, along with one of those high picks.' They want a top half of the lottery type pick for Jimmy Butler, along with a starting established player under contract. I understand that from Chicago's point of view."

Teams Can Now Place Protections On Traded Picks

Feb 20, 2017 9:27 PM

The Boston Celtics can now place pick protections on the draft pick they're owed from the Brooklyn Nets, which is a new rule for the NBA.

While teams can place protections when trading their own picks, they were unable to place new protections when trading those along to other teams.

Boston, for example, could place a top-1 or top-2 protection on the Brooklyn pick in a trade to protect themselves with an alternative pick compensation.

The Celtics have been seeking a superstar via trade and have been reluctant to move any of their Brooklyn picks for anything less.

Celtics, Clippers Have 'Intermittently' Held Blake Griffin Talks

Feb 20, 2017 9:13 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers have intermittently discussed a Blake Griffin trade with the Boston Celtics this season though a deal is unlikely at this point.

Griffin will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The Celtics would likely seek official permission to talk to Griffin about his future before executing a trade.

The Clippers would seek Jae Crowder, either Avery Bradley or Marcus Smart and multiple picks in exchange for Griffin.
