Lakers, Bulls, Rockets, Celtics, Thunder Lead NBA In 14-15 Profits

Jun 30, 2014 12:47 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are projected to make $100.1 million in profit for the 13-14 NBA season, comfortably the best in the NBA.

The Chicago Bulls are second at $61 million, followed by the Houston Rockets ($40.7 million), Boston Celtics ($33.1 million) and Oklahoma City Thunder ($29 million).

The Lakers have a huge profit despite contributing a league-high $49 million to revenue-sharing.

The New York Knicks are expected to take a net loss of $3.5 million due to $27 million in revenue-sharing contribution and paying a large luxury tax bill.

The San Antonio Spurs, Utah Jazz and Denver Nuggets finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, in net profits.

The Brooklyn Nets will post a loss of $144 million for the season.

Report: Nets Projected To Take $144M Loss In 13-14

Jun 30, 2014 12:40 PM

The Brooklyn Nets are projected to have a loss of $144 million for the 13-14 season, according to a confidential memo the NBA sent to all 30 teams in early June.

The NBA expects nine teams will end up having lost money once luxury-tax distribution and revenue-sharing payments are finalized.

The Washington Wizards are second in projected loss of about $13 million.

The Nets' loss is only from basketball activities and does not include benefits from their ownership stake in Barclays Center.

Bruce Ratner is open to selling his minority stake in the team and Mikhail Prokhorov would like to scale back spending to make that minority stake more appealing.

Bucks, Nets Reach Deal On Jason Kidd

Jun 30, 2014 4:56 PM

The Milwaukee Bucks will send two future second round picks to the Brooklyn Nets to secure the coaching rights to Jason Kidd.

Kidd will become head coach of the Bucks, replacing Larry Drew.

The Bucks' front office was previously unaware of ownership's interest in hiring Kidd. While Kidd will be hired strictly as head coach, Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that the expectation is that he'll eventually control basketball operations.

Howard Beck of Bleacher Report indicates that Kidd and the Bucks are working on a contract that will pay him $4 million to $5 million per season and no less than three seasons. Kidd's contract is not expected to include any clause that gives him final authority over personnel.

Jason Kidd Loses Power Play With Nets, Given Permission To Interview With Bucks

Jun 29, 2014 11:46 AM

Jason Kidd has received permission to speak with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Kidd approached ownership with a series of demands, including the role of overseeing the Brooklyn Nets’ basketball operations department in addition to his head coaching responsibilities.

The source said Kidd didn’t want general manager Billy King to be dismissed, but wanted to be given a title and placed above him in the organizational hierarchy.

Sam Amick of the USA Today reports that the Bucks' front office was unaware of the franchise's interest in Kidd, which suggests it came from ownership.

Wes Edens and Marc Lasry, the Bucks' new owners, are friends with Kidd.

As an interested aside, a message board poster on RealGM broke news of the developing situation with Kidd two days before it surfaced in the media.

Nets Optimistic Kevin Garnett Will Return

Jun 23, 2014 12:03 PM

The Brooklyn Nets are optimistic that Kevin Garnett will want to play for one more season.

Garnett has one season remaining on his current contract at $12 million.

Garnett has been quiet since the Nets were eliminated in the playoffs.

The odds of Paul Pierce re-signing with the Nets surely would be bolstered by Garnett's return.

Nets, Cavaliers In Talks To Swap Marcus Thornton For Jarrett Jack

The Brooklyn Nets are in talks to swap Marcus Thornton for Jarrett Jack of the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to sources.

The Nets have targeted Jack to improve their depth at point guard. Thornton has one season left on his contract while Jack has two guaranteed years remaining plus a partially guaranteed deal for the 2016-17 season.

The Nets are fearful that Shaun Livingston will receive a too rich contract from another team in free agency. Brooklyn can offer Livingston as much as a three-year, $10 million contract.
