Wolves, Spurs, Clippers, 76ers, Magic, Nets, Jazz To Pursue Andre Iguodala

Jun 27, 2017 4:57 PM

The Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Brooklyn Nets and Utah Jazz are among the teams that will pursue Andre Iguodala in free agency.

The Golden State Warriors still hope to re-sign Iguodala and it is not yet known whether Iguodala will take meetings with rival teams. Iguodala joined the Warriors on a four-year, $48 million deal in 2013.

If the Jazz lose Gordon Hayward, they are expected to make Iguodala their top priority.

Shaun Livingston is another free agent the Warriors would like to re-sign.

76ers, Nets Expected To Pursue J.J. Redick

Jun 26, 2017 1:00 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets are expected to pursue J.J. Redick in free agency. Both teams are in various stages of a rebuild, though the 76ers are far closer to competing for a playoff spot and can use a shooter of Redick's quality at shooting guard.

Reporters have consistently said they expect Redick to leave the Los Angeles Clippers this offseason for a more lucrative offer.

Redick is coming off a four-year, $27 million contract with the Clippers he signed in 2013.

Magic Johnson On D'Angelo Russell: I Needed Somebody Players Want To Play With

Jun 24, 2017 2:49 PM

Magic Johnson was critical of D'Angelo Russell in his comments after the Los Angeles Lakers traded him to the Brooklyn Nets in a move that frees up cap space and makes it clear that Lonzo Ball will be their face of the franchise.

"I'm going to do what it takes to get the right players in here with the right mindset," Johnson said. "D'Angelo is an excellent player. He has the talent to be an All-Star. We want to thank him for what he did for us, but what I needed was a leader. I needed somebody also that can make the other players better, and also that players want to play with."

The Lakers drafted Russell with the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, but used his potential to clear out Timofey Mozgov's contract while also acquiring Brook Lopez and the 27th overall pick.

Lakers Trade D'Angelo Russell, Timofey Mozgov To Nets For Brook Lopez, No. 27

Jun 20, 2017 7:27 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to trade D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov to the Brooklyn Nets for Brook Lopez and the 27th overall pick.

Lopez has one season remaining on his deal at $22.6 million.

Mozgov signed a four-year, $64 million deal with the Lakers last offseason that almost immediately became a clear mistake. This move unburdens the Lakers of that deal to create cap space for 2018 when they will pursue both LeBron James and Paul George.

Russell was the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft but his future with the team appeared uncertain with the Lakers expected to take Lonzo Ball in the draft.

Kevin Garnett's Inclusion In 2013 Trade Added Two Extra Pick Assets For Celtics

Jun 17, 2017 5:05 PM

The inclusion of Kevin Garnett in the Brooklyn Nets' trade with the Boston Celtics in 2013 is what made the deal one of the worst in NBA history.

If the Nets had traded for only Paul Pierce, they would have sent one draft pick and spare parts to match salary.

Garnett didn't waive his no trade clause until near the end of the first round of the draft and that expanded it to include Gerald Wallace, MarShon Brooks, Kris Humphries, Kris Joseph and Keith Bogans for Garnett, Pierce and Jason Terry. Brooklyn sent an additional future first round pick and a pick swap in 2017 that resulted in the top overall pick in May's lottery.

“The arrogance in the room was that we were going to roll, we were going to win these next couple of years,” said a former Nets staff member who was in the draft room. “Maybe not the championship, but we were going to win the next couple of years and have sustainable success. We were going to keep signing free agents. We were always going to draft between 20 and 30. So if we’re going to swap with the Celtics, who gives a f--k? That definitely was the thought.”
