Kerr Says Great Offer Was Made For 8th Pick

Jun 29, 2007 2:35 PM

The Suns' pursuit of Charlotte's No. 8 pick, where Phoenix would have grabbed Florida power forward Joakim Noah, crashed before the draft started when the Bobcats told the Suns they had a better offer. Phoenix threw options at Charlotte, one with its No. 24 pick and the 2008 Atlanta pick that it owns, and another more convoluted one involving Kurt Thomas.

"We made a great offer," Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said. "It definitely surprised us (to be turned down)."

Charlotte acquired Jason Richardson and draftee Jermareo Davidson from Golden State for the eighth pick, North Carolina's Brandan Wright.

Richardson Traded To Bobcats

Jun 29, 2007 12:16 AM

The Golden State Warriors traded veteran guard Jason Richardson to the Charlotte Bobcats on Thursday night for the rights to North Carolina forward Brandan Wright, the eighth overall pick.

Charlotte also got the rights to Alabama forward Jermareo Davidson, Golden State's choice with the 36th selection.

"I'll miss Jason, of course," Mullin said. "He's one of my favorite players in the league ... but we feel good about Brandan coming in. That doesn't make it any easier."

Amare To Charlotte In Three-Way Deal?

Jun 28, 2007 5:19 PM

The Minnesota Timberwolves' attempts to trade Kevin Garnett continued Thursday afternoon.

The Wolves have contacted the Charlotte Bobcats to try to help facilitate a deal for Garnett, one day after a potential three-way deal with the Phoenix Suns and the Atlanta Hawks hit a roadblock.

According to sources, the Wolves are asking the Bobcats to give up the No. 8 pick along with an undisclosed player. In the proposed deal, Garnett would go to Phoenix, and the Suns would send Amare Stoudemire to Charlotte. The Bobcats would also be required to take Suns guard Marcus Banks.

The Bobcats have been offering the No. 8 pick to various teams for weeks and have several offers. If they can't get something worked out with Minnesota and Phoenix before the draft, the Bobcats will likely move the pick in another deal, a source said.

However, a source in Phoenix continues to maintain that the team has not had any conversations about trading Stoudemire.

Sources: Suns Trying To Acquire Cats' Lottery Pick

Jun 27, 2007 12:39 AM

The Phoenix Suns are discussing a trade with the Charlotte Bobcats for the No. 8 pick to get into the NBA draft lottery, multiple sources close to both organizations told ESPN.com Tuesday night.

Although Phoenix forward Shawn Marion can opt out of his contract at the end of next season, a source close to the Suns told ESPN.com that he is not part of a deal and is expected to stay put.

The source indicated that role players were involved in the proposed trade, but at least one other team besides Phoenix and Charlotte is also involved, making the deal difficult to pull off.

The Suns currently own picks No. 24 and 29 in the first round while Charlotte has Nos. 8 and 21. Phoenix convinced the agents for likely lottery players Corey Brewer and Joakim Noah of Florida, Jeff Green of Georgetown and Brandan Wright of North Carolina to work out for the Suns because they felt confident they could get into the top 10.

Bobcats Open To Trading First Rounders

Jun 26, 2007 6:20 PM

The Charlotte Bobcats are making it clear: their two first round draft picks are for sale.

Vice president of basketball operations Bernie Bickerstaff has fielded numerous trade offers for the eighth and 22nd picks, and could swing a deal before Thursday's draft.

"Our philosophy is if you trade the picks then it has to make you immediately better," Bickerstaff said Tuesday. "There are scenarios out there that look good to us and we like because they make us better."

Bickerstaff didn't reveal the teams he's talked to, but several teams, including Philadelphia, Phoenix and Golden State, have shown interest in moving up in the draft.

"There are a lot of rumors, and we'd like to start some," Bickerstaff joked.

Jun 26, 2007 5:03 PM

Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace will become an unrestricted free agent Sunday after deciding not to extend his contract for another season.

Wallace, who led Charlotte in scoring last season with 18.1 points a game, will explore all options, his agent, Rob Pelinka, said Tuesday.

Wallace made just over $5.5 million last season. He will likely command at least $10 million a season under a new contract that could run as long as six years.

Peterson Leaves Coastal Carolina To Join Bobcats

Buzz Peterson is leaving coaching to join Michael Jordan.

Peterson resigned Tuesday as coach at Coastal Carolina to become director of player personnel for the Bobcats. Jordan, Peterson's former college roommate and teammate at North Carolina, is part-owner of the Bobcats and has final say on all basketball decisions.

Peterson was 35-25 in two seasons with the Chanticleers, who hired him after he was fired as Tennessee's coach in 2005. Before his four seasons with the Volunteers, Peterson coached at Tulsa and Appalachian State.

Noah Works Out For Bobcats

Jun 10, 2007 12:20 AM

Joakim Noah isn't putting much faith in the numerous NBA mock drafts, many of which have him going eighth overall to the Charlotte Bobcats.

"I think mock drafts are a complete joke," said Noah, one of six players to workout Saturday for the Bobcats. "I have no idea who makes them. ... I think, to me, it's all a situation of what a team needs. I'd rather listen to the general manager, the guy who makes the pick."

By all accounts, the 6-foot-11, 232-pound Noah appears to be a good fit for the Bobcats, who have struggled to keep their big men healthy the past couple of years.

Noah, a junior from Florida, went through a 90-minute workout for the Bobcats on Saturday. New coach Sam Vincent had him shooting plenty of midrange jump shots.

"What we want to see is his offensive skills," Vincent said. "We want to see him in the post, scoring. We want to see his shot from that midrange area. That is what we're trying to get a feel for."

Vincent called Noah a player who is "fundamentally sound," but added he'd like to see him work on the release of his jump shot, which tends to be awkward.

"The mechanics of his shot probably need a little adjusting, and I'm sure that is something the kid is working on," Vincent said.
