Chandler Expected To Opt For Unrestricted Free Agency

Jun 30, 2011 4:19 PM

Sources told ESPN.com that there has been minimal conversation between the Mavericks and Tyson Chandler about an extension since Dallas won the first championship in franchise history on June 12.

As badly as the Mavericks want the vocal Chandler back to reprise his role as the most impactful frontcourt sidekick Dirk Nowitzki has ever played with, team officials are apparently determined to see exactly how restrictive the new salary-cap rules are after the lockout before trying to re-sign the Team USA big man.

Chandler finished third in the league last season in NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting after averaging 10.1 points and 9.4 boards while playing in 74 of 82 games despite concerns about his injury history.

Jun 29, 2011 4:04 PM

After the Dallas Mavericks finished off the Heat in six games to win the NBA championship on June 12, it was widely reported that Erick Dampier was out partying with the Mavs. Not so, Dampier said.

“That’s a damn joke,’’ Dampier said Wednesday. “Why would I want to party with the Dallas Mavericks when they just beat us?’’

Dampier said an ESPN reporter tweeted that he was partying with the Mavs.

Blazers Acquire Felton, Send Out Miller, Fernandez

Jun 24, 2011 1:07 AM

The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired guard Raymond Felton from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for guard Andre Miller, while sending Rudy Fernandez and Petteri Koponen's NBA rights to Dallas as part of a three-team trade.

Portland also acquired the draft rights to Jordan Hamilton (taken 26th overall) and Tanguy Ngombo (taken 57th overall) from Dallas for Fernandez and Koponen. Hamilton's rights were then sent to Denver as part of the Felton trade and Portland is currently in discussions to trade Ngombo's rights.

"I want to acknowledge our basketball personnel staff for their hard work and thorough preparation for tonight's NBA Draft," said Trail Blazers Owner Paul Allen. "I thought it was a very good night for the Portland Trail Blazers and our fans.

"I also want to thank both Andre Miller and Rudy Fernandez for their contributions to the team these past few seasons and wish them all the best for the future."

Nowitzki Undecided On Playing For German National Team

Jun 21, 2011 3:57 PM

A year after deciding to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks with little drama, Dirk Nowitzki has a difficult decision to make in the wake of his first NBA championship.

Nowitzki, the Finals MVP, is debating whether to play for the German national team this summer. Nowitzki said during an appearance on ESPN 103.3's Ben and Skin Show that he would make the decision within the next few weeks.

"After a long, long season, one side is the rest factor and going strong into next season," said Nowitzki, a 13-year NBA veteran who turned 33 on Sunday. "On the other side is obviously my national team that's been good to me.

"I'm just going to see how my body feels" Nowitzki said, regarding whether he would play for Germany this summer. "I still have that splint on my finger and just see how I recover here these next couple of weeks. Then I think we can make an educated decision."

Casey Used Film Of Hockey Players To Help Dallas Defense

Jun 21, 2011 2:52 PM

During his introductory press conference as the head coach of the Raptors, Dwane Casey talked about his role as the architect of the Mavericks' defense.

Casey said he used hockey video to help set the defensive team’s defensive mindset during the NBA finals.

“Because we felt we were playing too soft against Miami to start the series,” he said. “And it really set the tone.

“I don’t know a lot about of hockey. I know I’ll learn about it. But we spliced in (footage of) those guys checking players up into the window (glass), into the boards and that type of thing and that’s the way we want to play."

Mavericks Face Tough Choices In Free Agency

Jun 18, 2011 2:31 PM

Fresh off of celebrating the franchise's first NBA championship, the Dallas Mavericks will face tough decisions about their championship roster.

The Mavs have six free agents -- Tyson Chandler, JJ Barea, Caron Butler, DeShawn Stevenson, Brian Cardinal and Peja Stojakovic.

Chandler and Barea in particular are likely to be highly coveted on the free-agent market.

Further complicating matters is the NBA's negotiation of a new labor agreement, which could see the elimination of a soft salary cap and the mid-level exception, two things the free-spending Mavericks used to put their roster together.

Carlisle Gets Congratulatory Call From President Obama

Jun 18, 2011 1:32 PM

Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle received a phone call from President Obama on Friday congratulating his team on their NBA Finals victory.

"The thing that he mentioned first and foremost was how well we played as a team. So I was really proud of that and I wanted to share that with the listeners and our fans and everybody in Dallas, because this is a big deal - not just for our team, but for the city," Carlisle said.

President Obama, an avid basketball fan, had a court constructed on the White House grounds. He mentioned some of the Mavs players to Carlisle during their brief talk.

"He mentioned some of our veteran guys - Jason Terry, Dirk [Nowitzki], Jason Kidd, [Shawn] Marion," Carlisle said. "And of course [J.J.] Barea's name came up because [the President] was in Puerto Rico last week. We had a very nice chat."
