Shawn Marion Unlikely To Re-Sign With Mavs

Jul 28, 2014 6:10 PM

Shawn Marion almost certainly will not re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks this offseason.

Marion spent five seasons with the Mavericks and helped the franchise win the 2011 NBA Finals.

“It was memorable, baby,” Marion said. “It’s hard to say it wasn’t fun. We had a great run and made the playoffs four of five years and won a championship. We set goals every year, and most years we reached them. And to win a championship, it was unbelievable. I wish we could have made a couple more runs at it, but it is what it is.”

Marion would like another shot at winning a title.

“If I see something really comfortable, then I’ll do it,” Marion said. “Right now, I’m just staying with my [newborn] son and relaxing. It’s only July, man. We got two more months. We’ll just wait and see how it works out.”

Marion plans on planting roots in Dallas even though he'll play elsewhere.

“It was an amazing run in Dallas,” he said. “Who knows what the future holds? But I definitely will be retiring in Dallas. I love living there. I’m building my dream home there, and that’s where I’ll spend most of my time.”

Parsons Left Rockets In Part For Bigger Role

Jul 24, 2014 11:51 PM

Chandler Parsons may have been motivated to leave the Houston Rockets for a bigger role.

James Harden believes the Rockets won't take a step back despite losing Parsons to the Dallas Mavericks in the offseason.

"Dwight and I are the cornerstones of the Rockets," Harden said while appearing at a charity event in the Philippines, according to The Philippine Star. "The rest of the guys are role players or pieces that complete our team. We've lost some pieces and added some pieces.

"I think we'll be fine next season."

Parsons averaged 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game last season.

"That's a pretty ridiculous statement if he meant that," Parsons said. "That's part of the reason I wanted to go to Dallas, because I'm ready for that next step. I'm ready for a bigger role, and I'm ready for more leadership.

"If anybody should understand that, it's James, because he was in the same situation in Oklahoma City and then he got his chance to come to Houston and shine. I'm not real sure what that means."

Jameer Nelson Finalizes Two-Year, $5.6M Deal With Mavericks

Jul 24, 2014 9:51 PM

Free agent guard Jameer Nelson has finalized the paperwork on his two-year, $5.6 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks, a league source told RealGM.

Nelson will earn $2.73 million in the first season of his deal and $2.86 million in Year 2, which will be a player option.

Well over 10 NBA teams – including the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls – pursued Nelson in unrestricted free agency and remained interested as he neared an agreement with the Mavericks.

Nelson’s former star teammate, Dwight Howard, made multiple recruiting calls to Nelson about joining the Rockets, sources told RealGM. Howard and Nelson led the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009.

Despite designs on his potential role with various franchises, Nelson balanced finances and a winning situation and decided upon Dallas earlier in the week. He’s expected to receive strong consideration for the Mavericks’ starting point guard position.

After six straight playoff appearances with the Magic, Nelson underwent two losing seasons in which the organization went 43-121. He averaged 12.1 points, seven assists and 3.4 rebounds in 68 games last season.

Nelson, 32, was the 20th overall draft pick in 2004 out of St. Joseph’s Univeristy. In 10 years with the Magic, Nelson averaged 12.6 points and 5.4 assists.

ESPN first reported Nelson’s deal with the Mavericks.

Eric Griffin Signs Three-Year Deal With Mavs

Jul 18, 2014 3:53 PM

Eric Griffin’s contract with the Dallas Mavericks is a three-year, non-guaranteed deal, league sources told RealGM.

The Mavericks announced the free agent signing of Griffin on Friday.

Griffin is averaging 9.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and two blocks for the Mavericks’ summer league team this month, and he’s a high-level athlete and an increasingly skilled forward. At 6-foot-8, Griffin had arguably the best dunk of summer league: a one-handed slam over Shane Larkin.

Griffin had gone to training camp with the Miami Heat last season and was a final roster cut. He then played in Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

Griffin, 24, averaged 15.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in his senior season at Campbell University.
