Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets Discussing Extension

May 22, 2020 10:17 AM

The Nuggets and representatives for Carmelo Anthony have scheduled a face-to-face negotiating session with hopes of agreeing to a three-year contract extension, Ken Berger of CBS Sports is reporting.

Without an extension, Anthony will hit the free agent market in 2011.

Anthony is free to negotiate an extension with Denver prior to the beginning of free agency on July 1.

The Nuggets are fully aware that Anthony will be a hot item next summer for teams that miss out on the likes of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade this summer.

They are hopeful that this will be the first step toward "making Melo a Nugget for a long time," one of the people familiar with the team's strategy said.

May 18, 2010 6:22 PM

Nuggets coach George Karl has begun showing up at the office on occasion as he continues cancer treatments.

Karl is improving as he undergoes treatment for neck and throat cancer.

Kim Van Deraa, Karl's life partner, wrote in her blog Tuesday that Karl's energy level is slowly rising and that he is still using a feeding tube for most of his nutrition.

"He has tried a few other things which usually ended with -- I'm not ready for that!" Van Deraa wrote.

Karl, who turned 59 last week, has said he intends to return to coaching later this summer.

Karl's Health Improving, Plans To Coach 10-11 Season

May 14, 2010 12:19 PM

Geroge Karl is feeling better and plans to return to coaching next season.

"I'll be excited to be back on the bench. That's what I do, that's the dream," Karl said Thursday in an interview at his home.

Asked if there's any chance he won't return as coach, Karl said, "I don't see that happening, but I am going to put my health first, and come next fall, if the doctors don't feel it's a wise thing and I don't think it's a wise thing, (then we'll re-evaluate). But my feeling is the exact opposite. We're in a good place, the steps have been good, the tests have been good and I've just got to keep plugging away every day."

Karl Remains Hospitalized With Complications

May 5, 2010 7:35 AM

Nuggets coach George Karl is expected to return home Wednesday after spending almost a week in the hospital with complications from his battle with cancer.

Karl experienced swelling in his left knee and was treated for a blood clot in his right leg.

Kim Van Deraa, Karl's longtime girlfriend, said he was expected to be released Tuesday until he awoke with a swollen left knee "and the doctors were still cautious about him being able to get out of bed due to his clotting right leg so he was bedridden since Friday night and going a little stir crazy."

Karl completed a six-week treatment of chemotherapy and radiation for throat and neck cancer a month ago.

Karl Hospitalized With Blood Clot

May 2, 2010 9:38 AM

Nuggets coach George Karl has been hospitalized with a blood clot in his leg after recently finishing a six-week regimen of chemotherapy and radiation for throat and neck cancer.

Karl's longtime girlfriend, Kim Van Deraa, said in a blog post Saturday that Karl noticed pain and swelling in one of his big toes Friday afternoon.

He was hospitalized for blood clots in March as well.

"I called Dr. [Jacques] Saari and he set up to have George get an ultrasound on his leg to find out if he had any blood clots," Van Deraa wrote. "And it turned out he has a blood clot in the same right leg so he was admitted to the hospital to break up the clot."

Karl, whose cancer treatment has an 85-90 percent survival rate, was last on the sideline with the Nuggets on March 16.

Joey Graham Wants To Remain In Denver

May 1, 2010 5:31 PM

Joey Graham didn't have a consistent role with the Nuggets this season, but still wants to return to the club next year.

"Absolutely. I love the city of Denver, I love the organization. I love the guys on the team," Graham said after the Jazz eliminated the Nuggets on Friday night.

"This is the first time that I've felt that I've gelled with a team so fast. It's a great organization. It was great to be here. I'd definitely want to come back. Definitely."

Graham played under a one-year contract worth around $825,000 that became guaranteed in January.

"Right now, I'm just leaving it up to the Lord," he said when asked if he would accept another one-year deal.

"Wherever He wants to place me, wherever He wants me to go I'm all for it. All I can do is just be patient and see what's out there, see what's on the table for me. If Denver wants me to come back, tell me where to sign. I'm ready to go."

Smith Pouted Through Game 6 Loss

May 1, 2010 5:26 PM

As the Nuggets saw their season come to a close on Friday night, guard J.R. Smith was seen pouting near the end of the team's bench.

Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post called it, "another display of no regard to authority that has peppered Smith's time in Denver..."

Smith didn't join his teammates during huddles or even respond when teammates or coaches tried to engage him.

"I'm not really sure," he said asked why he acted that way.

Asked what frustrated him that much, Smith said, "The whole game, pretty much."

Acting coach Adrian Dantley said he was unaware of Smith's actions.

"I didn't see what happened with J.R.," Dantley said. "He didn't get in an argument with me."

Still, Smith said after Denver was eliminated by Utah that he wants to remain with the Nuggets.

"Yeah," the guard said. "I don't want to go anywhere."
