Webber Will 'Definitely Play,' But There's No Room In Detroit

Dec 31, 2007 9:05 AM

Agent Aaron Goodwin continues to stump for his out-of-work client Chris Webber. He reached out to the Sacramento Bee this week, saying, "He's not retiring this year. He's definitely playing. It's just going to be a matter of where. He'll definitely play, and he'll definitely make a decision within the next few weeks."

It might not be his decision. Thus far, there haven't been too many teams knocking down his door -- though Houston sure needs some front-court help.

"Any team that's got an opportunity to be in the playoffs, he'd have interest in," Goodwin said. "But Detroit by far would be the front-runner. It's home, and it's where he played a year ago. He knows the system."

However, right now there is no room in Detroit for C-Webb.

Detroit Recalls Cheikh Samb From Fort Wayne

Dec 21, 2007 5:16 PM

The Detroit Pistons announced today that they have recalled Cheikh Samb from the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League.

In two games (both starts), Samb averaged 13.5 points, 9.5 assists and 4.0 blocks in 31.5 minutes with the Mad Ants.

Source: Chris Webber Close To Returning To NBA

Dec 21, 2007 2:28 AM

Fourteen-year veteran Chris Webber is close to returning to the NBA, with the Pistons his likely destination, a source close to Webber told ESPN.com.

"Look for him to be back the first week of January," the source said.

The Boston Celtics, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers had also inquired about Webber's services, with the Heat intensifying their efforts after backup center Alonzo Mourning suffered an apparent season-ending injury to his patellar tendon in a game at Atlanta Wednesday night. But for Webber, a Michigan native, his familiarity with the Pistons' players and Coach Flip Saunders' system after playing there last season appears to make them the most desirable team.

The Pistons currently have the maximum 15 players on their roster after trading Nazr Mohammed to the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for Primoz Brezec and Walter Herrmann last week, so they would have to make another move to free a spot for Webber.

Pistons Could Add Webber Soon

Dec 16, 2007 4:58 PM

The Pistons saved a ton of money (around $20 million) in a deal Friday that sent Nazr Mohammed to Charlotte for Primoz Brezec and Walter Herrmann. The contracts of both imported Bobcats are up at the end of this season, while Mohammed is owed more than $19 million over the three years beyond this one.

Mohammed didn't get a lot of playing time for the Pistons but likely will move into the starting center spot for Charlotte. The Pistons had to release Ron Dupree to make room for the new twosome, and there is talk now that they could bring in Chris Webber for the veteran's minimum without incurring the luxury tax.
