Carmelo Anthony: I Really Wanted To Be Drafted By Pistons In 2003

Mar 23, 2016 2:25 PM

One of the NBA's most monumental what-if's is what would have happened if the Detroit Pistons selected Carmelo Anthony instead of Darko Milicic.

The Pistons went on to win the 2004 NBA Finals despite getting nothing from Milicic and had a streak of seven straight Eastern Conference Finals.

Anthony would have given the Pistons a longer window of contention and he has been at his best playing beside strong point guards and veteran leaders. Anthony eventually became teammates with Chauncey Billups as members of the Denver Nuggets.

"That's why I was a little bit disappointed," Anthony said, "because I really wanted to go to Detroit. You had Chauncey, you had all those guys over there...Detroit, they had something going over there."

Anthony would have been perfect for the Pistons as a truly great individual scorer to complement their defense.

"It would have been at a whole other level," LeBron James said of their rivalry.

"I was told that Detroit was going to take me," Anthony said. "Once Cleveland made the pick, I was like, 'Oh, I'm going to Detroit.'"

"That ball-stopping mentality that Carmelo has? He wouldn't have had that if he was a Piston," Billups said. "We wouldn't let him play like that. He would have been a much better player than he is now—and he's a great player now.

"This guy would have been," Billups said, pausing to chuckle for a moment, "he would have been an absolute icon, because winning takes you there."

Jodie Meeks Likely Out For Remainder Of Regular Season

Mar 21, 2016 1:45 PM

Jodie Meeks is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with an undisclosed shoulder injury.

Stan Van Gundy said Monday he doesn't expect Meeks back in game-ready shape before the end of the season.

"No, I don't," Van Gundy said. "Unfortunately."

Meeks has been inactive since suffering an undisclosed shoulder injury in practice last Tuesday.

He was on the pathway to playing again after suffering a broken right foot in the second game of the regular season.

Meeks signed a three-year, $19.5 million deal in July 2014 with the Detroit Pistons, but has played in just 62 of 152 games.

NBPA Considering Filing Grievance Over Donatas Motiejunas Trade

Mar 7, 2016 12:51 PM

The National Basketball Players Association is considering filing a grievance with the NBA after the Detroit Pistons voided a trade with the Houston Rockets due to concerns about the back of Donatas Motiejunas.

Sources close to Motiejunas believe the voided trade could damage his status as a restricted free agent next offseason.

Motiejunas had back surgery in April.

"Medical clearance was not given on all players and the trade is being rescinded," Pistons general manager Jeff Bower said in a statement four days after the deal.

Motiejunas has since questioned the validity of the Pistons' decision, telling Basketnews.Lt in his native Lithuania that he was "screwed."

"The team doctor simply says whether you pass or don't, although they may not do any checks," Motiejunas told the website. "Those 48 hours actually just let the team decide whether they want you or not. The Pistons announced I did not pass the medical, although I surely did pass it and played even before it. I just got screwed. The injury was a pretense to call of the trade. They changed their minds."

Stan Van Gundy Admires How Spurs Get Players Below Market Value

Mar 3, 2016 10:57 AM

Stan Van Gundy admires the way the San Antonio Spurs have built out their roster with players taking less than their open market value.

David West took an eight-figure pay cut to leave the Indiana Pacers and join the Spurs, while Tim Duncan is making just $5.25 million while Manu Ginobili is earning $2.8 million this season.

"There's no question when you don't have to pay guys market value it's pretty easy to build depth," Van Gundy said. "The salary cap is hard on most of us trying to build depth.

"But with them, when they've got (Tim) Duncan playing below market value, (Tony) Parker playing below market value, (Manu) Ginobili playing below market value, West playing below market value, when those guys all give up money, well then it's easy to add other people and allow you to go out and do what you need to do to build depth. They've done a great job of that."

Van Gundy is in his second season with the Detroit Pistons as head coach and chief decision maker.

"They've got a lot of guys willing to play for below their market value. So it's a little different situation than most of us have," Van Gundy said.
