Dunleavy Gets Multi-Year Deal

Oct 31, 2005 6:33 PM

The Golden State Warriors have signed forward Mike Dunleavy to a multi-year contract extension, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin announced today.  Per team policy, terms of the deal were not announced.

?We?re extremely grateful that we were able to reach an agreement with Mike and his representatives,? said Mullin. ?We view him as a integral part of our future and as a player who will continue to develop and expand his game, much as he has during his first three years in the NBA.  Mike is a player who has improved every year that he has been in the league - as the statistics indicate - and his ability to simply help our team win basketball games will play a big part in our future success.  Additionally, he is a tremendous individual and an asset to our franchise both on and off the court.?

Dunleavy, 25, appeared in 79 games (all starts) for the Warriors last season, averaging a career-high 13.4 points 5.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.00 steal in 32.5 minutes per contest.  He also posted new career-highs in several other categories, including field goal percentage (.451), three-point percentage (.388), steals per game and minutes per game.  Over the final 34 games of the season, the 6-9 forward averaged 15.1 points and 5.7 rebounds, while shooting 48.4% from the field and 43.3% from three-point range.  Originally selected with the third overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, Dunleavy has appeared in 236 games with Golden State, averaging 10.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 26.3 minutes per contest.

?I?m really excited to know that I will be a member of this team for the next several years,? said Dunleavy. ?I knew from the beginning of this process that this is the place that I wanted to be and an organization that I wanted to be a part of in the future.  I?m very optimistic about the direction of the franchise and the potential for this team to become one of the top clubs in the Western Conference for several years. Additionally, I want to thank Chris Cohan for his continued financial commitment to this team and the entire basketball operations staff for having faith in my abilities.?

Dunleavy Contract Deadline Arrives

Oct 31, 2005 7:20 AM

The deadline to extend the contracts of fourth-year players is 9 p.m. today. As of Sunday night, Warriors forward Mike Dunleavy still had no contract extension. Weeks of negotiations, which executive vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin said were "good," have dwindled down to the final hours.

Of course, you can't tell by looking at Dunleavy, who took some ribbing from coach Mike Montgomery after Sunday's practice about shaving off his mustache.

"He's holding up pretty damn well," said forward Troy Murphy, who along with guard Jason Richardson was due for an extension before last season and didn't get it until the 11th hour. "He's better than J-Rich and I were last year.

"This time I just went home and laid in the bed, didn't want to leave, didn't want to do anything. I had the phone, checked to see if it was working and just waited. Yeah, he's holding up well."

D-League Not In Immediate Plans For Warriors

Oct 22, 2005 5:29 AM

Don't expect any Warriors to participate when the NBA Development League tips off Nov. 18. All indications are that Golden State wants its rookies on the big-league roster to ensure quality of practice over quantity of minutes.

Asked this week if rookie Chris Taft was likely to be sent down, coach Mike Montgomery said "probably no." He said his players will benefit more from working with the Warriors' training staff and coaches than being immersed in a faraway system.

"When it gets to the point where a guy just needs to play the game, then that's maybe where you utilize that league," Montgomery said. "But the D-League is not connected necessarily to us, even though the players are ours.

"The system they're going to run, the things they're going to do, the terminology they're going to use -- there's not really much of a connection to us. So if a guy goes down, I don't know if he's going to be better for it."

Richardson Realizes Suns Face Big Drop-Off

Oct 20, 2005 9:07 AM

Warriors guard Jason Richardson knows just how much of an impact losing the best player can have on a team. Richardson missed nine straight games last season with a sprained left ankle. The Warriors went 0-9.

So he knows, despite the talent that remains, the Phoenix Suns are going to suffer a drop-off with their most talented player, center Amare Stoudemire, out for at least the first half of the season. Add to that their offseason moves, and this is far from the same Suns team that reached the 2005 Western Conference finals.

"It's kind of hard," Richardson said. "They've got a lot of good players. They've still got Shawn Marion, still got Steve Nash. But then again you lose Amare Stoudemire, he got hurt. You lose Joe Johnson in a trade. You lose Quentin Richardson in a trade. It's going to be tough."

Richardson Says Dress Code Targets Black Players

Oct 20, 2005 2:37 AM

Jason Richardson wants to keep wearing his chains, and the Golden State Warriors guard believes the NBA's new dress code takes aim at black players in the league.

He is calling for the players' association to fight the new wardrobe rules announced this week that will go into effect when the season kicks off next month.

"They want to sway away from the hip-hop generation," Richardson said Wednesday night before the Warriors played the Phoenix Suns in a preseason game. "You think of hip-hop right now and think of things that happen like gangs having shootouts in front of radio stations.

"One thing to me that was kind of racist was you can't wear chains outside your clothing. I don't understand what that has to do with being business approachable. ... You wear a suit, you still could be a crook. You see all what happened with Enron and Martha Stewart. Just because you dress a certain way doesn't mean you're that way. Hey, a guy could come in with baggy jeans, a 'do rag and have a Ph.D. and a person who comes in with a suit could be a three-time felon."

Players will be required to wear business-casual attire when involved in team or league business. They can't wear visible chains, pendants or medallions over their clothes.

The NBA announced Monday in a memo to teams that a dress code will go into effect at the start of the season. Saying players must dress in "business casual" attire, the league banned items such as sleeveless shirts, shorts, sunglasses while indoors, and headphones during team or league business.

The policy also requires players on the bench not in uniform to wear sport jackets, shoes and socks.

Diogu To Miss Three To Four Weeks

Oct 15, 2005 11:43 PM

Warriors rookie Ike Diogu is in a race against the clock to be ready by opening night.

After Diogu's fractured left hand was examined by team medical personnel Friday, the Warriors announced the forward will be sidelined for at least three weeks. If the diagnosis is correct, Diogu won't be available when the Warriors begin the season Nov. 2 against the Atlanta Hawks.

``That's definitely the goal,'' Diogu said of being ready for the opener. ``I hope to be ready to go by then. I hope it's not four weeks. We'll just have to see how it is.''

Diogu was injured Sunday at training camp in Laie, Hawaii. He can still run and shoot free throws, and he will continue to learn the team's system by observing.

``It's unfortunate he got hurt. Ike was making progress,'' Warriors Coach Mike Montgomery said. ``Fortunately it wasn't as serious as some injuries. He'll have to learn from watching for now.''

Warriors Pick Diogu Breaks Left Ring Finger

Oct 10, 2005 9:11 AM

Forward Ike Diogu, the Warriors' top draft pick, broke his left ring finger Sunday, the team announced.

He sustained the injury during an extra practice Sunday. The rookies held a mini-session after the main practice at Kahuku High School on the island of Oahu. The three draft picks -- Diogu, Monta Ellis and Chris Taft -- and four of the five training camp invitees -- Aaron Miles, Ray Young, Deji Akindele and Justin Davis -- went over plays and ran a full-court, three-on-three drill.

Diogu, selected No. 9 overall, was going up for a basket when he was stripped by Young. He writhed in pain after the play as executive vice president Chris Mullin and general manager Rod Higgins looked on.

Diogu was attended to while the drill continued. His ring finger was taped to his pinkie and he continued playing. Diogu said he was fine afterward.

During a later examination it was learned he broke the fourth metacarpal on his left hand. He will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Oakland on Thursday. How long he'll be out will be determined then.
