The New York Knicks have started the season slowly, while two of Carmelo Anthony's free agency suitors, the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks, look capable of going on deep title runs.
Anthony and the Knicks play both teams on the road this week.
"Of course I know that they're playing very well," Anthony said at shootaround Monday morning. "It's not something that I kind of say to myself that I regret doing this or regret doing that."
Anthony bought into the vision of Phil Jackson to stay with the Knicks.
"No, I can't do that," Anthony said of playing the what-if game. "I can't do that. I can't do that. That's just not my nature as a person. I would never be able to sit down and ask myself 'what if?'"
Anthony said he "took a deep, long look at" all that Houston had to offer, such as weather, and no state tax. He had conversations with Howard, but in the end wanted to remain with the Knicks.
"We had some great dialogue back and forth," Anthony said. "I talked to him. We talked about some things. Ultimately it came down to what I felt at that moment, what I really wanted.
"Me and Dwight had some contact and some conversation. He tried. He tried extremely hard. It didn't have anything to do with Dwight or James or anything like that. It came down to my own decision."
Dwight Howard underwent a platelet-rich plasma therapy treatment on his right knee on Thursday.
Houston Rockets athletic trainer Keith Jones confirmed Howard underwent “platelet rich protein therapy,” another term for Howard’s PRP treatment.
“It feels a lot better,” Howard said. “I had to get a shot in it to clear some of the stuff out it. I’m trying to do whatever I can to get back on the floor.”
Howard was not in the Rockets' lineup on Saturday and Kevin McHale said there is no timetable for when he will return.
James Harden discussed the difference that Trevor Ariza has made in the Houston Rockets' lineup this season.
“His leadership, his defensive abilities, his shot-making -- all three of those things are something that we were lacking last year,” Harden said. “[Ariza] brings that ability to the table this year.”
Harden downplayed the impact of Parsons' departure over the summer, describing himself and Howard as Houston’s cornerstones and the rest of the roster as role players.
Parsons has said he does not pay attention to Ariza's play.
"I don't pay any attention to him," Parsons said recently. "Listen, many people replace many people every year in this league. He's a good, proven player in this league. He's supposed to play good for them."
Josh Powell has officially joined the Houston Rockets' coaching staff.
Powell has been working with the Rockets in a coaching role since October.
Powell spent part of last season with the Rockets and has played eight NBA seasons.
The Houston Rockets are actively seeking to deal the $8.34 million trade exception that they acquired in the Jeremy Lin trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Rockets have talked to teams about 10 to 12 players.
The Rockets had been expected to wait until more players were eligible to be traded, either after Dec. 15 when players signed in the off-season can be dealt or more likely at the February trade deadline.
Kobe Bryant was asked if he believes Dwight Howard is a p-word, as Kevin Durant called him during a recent game.
Bryant called Howard "soft" repeatedly in their game on opening night this season.
“No, I don’t feel that way I don’t think Kevin [Durant] does (either).
“When you get in argument with somebody, you'll say things out of frustration and out of anger that you really don't mean."
Goran Dragic plans to opt out this offseason to test free agency, according to sources.
Dragic previously stated that he planned on opting out in order to re-sign a long-term deal with the Phoenix Suns.
Sources say the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers will be options for Dragic.
At issue with the Suns and Dragic is the guard logjam on the team, which Dragic addressed on Tuesday. He told AZCentral.com’s Paul Coro that the reason for some of Phoenix’s early struggles this year is, “Because there’s only one ball and we’re all point guards. That’s an easy answer.”
Dragic’s numbers have dipped this year (15.6 points, 47.5 percent shooting), and the Suns generally have had a harder time offensively.
Dwight Howard is under investigation by authorities in Georgia in regards to allegedly hitting his six-year-old son with a belt, according to multiple reports.
