Youngest Buss Working His Way Into Family Business

Nov 23, 2011 11:17 AM

Joey Buss, youngest son of Dr. Jerry Buss, is just 27-years-old and is pursuing his place in the family business. He is currently CEO and president of the D-Fenders of the D-League.

"I want to work my way up; I don't want to just be placed in a role for the Lakers," Joey said. "I feel like I can do more for the D-Fenders, offer more – and learn more that way for myself. After that happens, then I can implement things for the Lakers. Youth is on my side. I just want to make the best of the opportunities I have."

Joey Buss spent an entire season shadowing Phil Jackson and sitting in on every coaches' meeting. He also attends board of governors meetings.

"The long term is my dad wants to transfer the shares out to his children," Joey said. "It'll become a process in which all of us will have ownership of the team. I just think there'll be a natural progression, and I should be ready when that happens and not try to push anything earlier than that. Using this as an opportunity to grow is great for me.

"My dad will bounce things off of me. Business and basketball. I get somebody's ear basically all the time, so there's always influence that way. At the end of the day, the top-level Lakers decisions are not mine to make, but I definitely do have a voice."

Sign-And-Trades For Tax Teams Grandfathered In For First Two Years

Nov 11, 2011 11:49 AM

Chris Broussard of ESPN reports several particulars of the owners' new proposal.

There will be an annual mini-midlevel for luxury tax teams at $3 million. The previous offer included an offer at $2.5 million every other year.

Luxury tax teams will also be able to execute a sign-and-trade during the first two years of the new deal. This two-year grace period clearly makes a huge impact on the NBA landscape because of the impending 2012 free agencies of Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

The union contends that the problem is that the owners changed the definition of tax payer in such a way where Bird Rights would be destroyed.

Kobe Bryant is urging the NBA's owners to meet with the players before Wednesday.

“We need for the two sides to get together again before Wednesday, because we’re too close to getting a deal done,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports on Monday. “We need to iron out the last system items and save this from spiraling into a nuclear winter.”

A league source says the two sides are organizing a meeting for Tuesday.

Jimmy Buss In Control Of Lakers, Openly Resentful Of Jackson

Nov 2, 2011 2:01 PM

During his interview with the Lakers for their head coaching position, Brian Shaw was taken aback by the negatively from Jimmy Buss about Phil Jackson.

"There were some things that were said that I won't really get into," Shaw said. "It was kind of bashing Phil Jackson, that I just refused to just sit and listen to. And that's when I said, 'Hey, I love Phil Jackson. I appreciate everything that we've all been able to accomplish under him. We've all prospered since he's been the coach here.' "

Told of Shaw's comments, Mitch Kupchak said he and the Lakers will always appreciate the contributions of Jackson to the franchise.

"Phil and I have a great relationship -- I was with him two days ago and we sat down for an hour a week ago," Kupchak said. "We had been to seven NBA Finals and won five Finals with him, and this organization is eternally grateful to have had him as a coach.

"I don't know what you're referring to what took place in that meeting. I don't even want to speculate. ... Phil has been very, very good to this organization and city, and we are very, very grateful to have had him as coach. I consider him as a friend and somebody I owe a lot to personally."

But Shaw says Kupchak wasn't the one speaking poorly of Jackson.

"The negativity toward Phil didn't come from Mitch," Shaw said. "It was more from Jimmy Buss just doubting some of the decisions he made in terms of how he was handling and running the team and coaching the team on the sidelines, and sitting down instead of getting up. People look at coaches and want them to pace up and down the sidelines and bark instructions to the guys. That's not Phil's demeanor. That was viewed as a negative in my estimation -- but it won him five championships with the Lakers and six with the Bulls, and that was his coaching style when he won, so why was that not acceptable now?"

Two weeks after he heard of Mike Brown's impending hire, Shaw said he received a voicemail from Jerry Buss.

"Dr. Buss did call and leave a message saying that his son is in control now, and he has to let him make whatever decisions that he makes, that I was still one of his favorites, and that he was sure that I would be OK going forward," Shaw said.

Baron Would Prefer Lakers, Knicks, Not Heat

Nov 1, 2011 6:45 PM

If the Cavaliers decide to shed the contract of Baron Davis using the proposed amnesty clause of the new CBA, his preference is to play for the Lakers or Knicks.

Another option for Davis would be the Bobcats.

Sources say the Heat would not be near the top of the list for Davis.
