Lakers, Cavaliers Discussing Gasol For Bynum Trade

Dec 31, 2013 12:30 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers have discussed a trade involving a swap of Pau Gasol for Andrew Bynum.

No deal is believed to be imminent, but both sides are considering it ahead of the Jan. 7 deadline for when the second half of Bynum's salary for the season becomes guaranteed.

The Lakers could save more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes by trading for Bynum and then waiving him.

A trade would need to include at least one additional player to make the deal work and perhaps other assets from the Cavaliers.

Sources say the Lakers are reluctant to part with Gasol in any trade without receiving assets of some value in return.

The Cavaliers have pursued Gasol since this past summer when they had extensive talks with the Lakers, which ended after Dwight Howard signed with the Houston Rockets.

Sources: Luol Deng Receiving Interest From Cavaliers, Mavericks, Lakers, Raptors, Spurs, Grizzlies, Nets

Dec 27, 2013 2:53 PM

Luol Deng is already receiving interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets among others, according to sources.

The Bulls have reportedly decided they will try to re-sign Deng in free agency.

“I’ve moved around a lot, but this is the longest I’ve been in one place my whole life and I came here at 19," Deng said. "I’m 28 now. I pretty much grew up here. So for me to think about being somewhere else, it’s a weird feeling. But at the same time, I don’t know what it’s like to be somewhere else. I’ve been here my whole career. Maybe it’s better, maybe it’s not. I don’t know that. The best thing I can do is play, be the best I can be and hope it works out. I don’t know if it will be here, if it will be somewhere else. I don’t know that.

"But right now, I can’t hang on to that. I can’t control that. I think when the season’s over and everything is done, then you sit down and you go through that stuff. But for me to think about it now, it’s just a waste of energy because I don’t even know — what am I supposed to think about? I don’t know what city. So it’s just a waste of time.”

Kobe Feels 'More Locked In Now'

Dec 25, 2013 9:23 PM

Kobe Bryant has no plans to sit out the rest of the season as he recovers from a fracture of the lateral tibial plateau in his left knee.

"I think I feel more locked in now than I've been my entire career, because of this," Bryant said. It was his first media session since being diagnosed with the fracture last week. "The spirits are fine, the focus is great. Just going to see what happens when I come back."

Bryant is nearly one week into an expected six-week recovery.

"My philosophy on that kind of stuff is: Do your job," Bryant said. "You owe it to the organization and your teammates to get ready as fast and as quickly as you possibly can and to come back as strong as you possibly can."

D'Antoni Apologizes For Comments To Lakers' Fans

Dec 25, 2013 6:16 PM

Mike D'Antoni apologized for suggesting discouraged fans of the Los Angeles Lakers "find another team to root for."

"I was an idiot last night," D'Antoni said. "I was out of my mind. I was ticked off. We didn't play well and I said some stuff I shouldn't have. It was stupid. That's me, I just made a mistake."

The Lakers have a 13-15 record despite a host of injuries.

"To me, the meaning is this: We got a team that needs to overachieve and we have a lot of injuries and we're in a tough state right now," said D'Antoni, referring to the Lakers losing six of their past nine games, including two straight by a combined 46 points. "So, we need everybody to be pulling with us and it's going to take the whole village to get this done. That was the meaning. I just said it wrong and it came out wrong because I was agitated. But I apologize, and we'll move on. But we need everybody to be behind these guys. They're going to play as hard as they can play."
