D'Angelo Russell Apologizes For Recording Conversation With Nick Young

Mar 30, 2016 8:54 PM

D'Angelo Russell has apologized for recording a conversation he had with Nick Young that was leaked to the media.

Russell has been "isolated" from his Los Angeles Lakers' teammates since the video surfaced.

“I am sick,” Russell told The Vertical by phone on his drive to the Staples Center on Wednesday. “I am sorry about recording the video. I can’t repeat myself enough on that: I am sorry I recorded that video. I feel horrible. I wish this never happened.”

When asked about how the video left his possession and became public months after it was recorded, Russell said: “Honestly, I have no idea. Me and Nick, that’s our friendship: We play around a lot. Anyone who knows him and knows me, they know that about us. But I apologize for recording that video. I never intentionally wanted to hurt anyone. I never wanted what was said in there to get out. It was my fault that it did, but that was never intentional.

“The thing is, we record ourselves doing dumb stuff all the time,” Russell told The Vertical. “On the road or home, wherever. We go back and watch what we did and said and laugh at ourselves. I guess I just never thought that these pranks we pull on ourselves could have bigger consequences. That was a big lesson I learned.

“I’ve said to myself over and over: What could anyone possibly gain by intentionally doing something that could hurt someone else’s relationship? I never wanted to hurt anyone. I’m sorry for it.”

Russell previously apologized to Young privately.

“He heard me out,” Russell told The Vertical. “I cherish our friendship on and off the court. … I never meant to hurt anyone.”

Russell remains committed to the Lakers despite what has frequently been a difficult season.

“I have the best job in the world, playing for this franchise, in a city that I love,” Russell told The Vertical. “You have to be willing to take the good with the bad, and that’s part of this job. … But I feel even stronger today than I did then. I love this city and love this franchise. … I take nothing for granted.

“I know this is going to be tough. I am a good person. I cherish the relationships I have and I would never intentionally hurt someone. I will work hard to earn back the trust of my teammates and those who were impacted by this.

“I’ll do whatever it takes.”

Lakers 'Isolating' D'Angelo Russell Since Nick Young Video Surfaced

Mar 30, 2016 12:31 AM

D'Angelo Russell has lost the trust of some teammates after a video surfaced of a conversation he had with Nick Young.

The video, which is believed to have come to light last week via the Twitter account of a celebrity gossip site, shows Russell filming Young while asking questions about Young being with other women. In the video, Young does not appear to realize he's being taped.

Young got engaged to Australian rapper Iggy Azalea last summer.

Various Lakers officials are aware of the issue and are dismayed with Russell, sources say, but to this point they have chosen not to intervene.

"Right now," one source said, "they're handling it by isolating him."

Said one team insider: "This was a prank gone wrong and a mistake by [Russell], and he has to be held accountable, but I would hope he isn't overly criticized for it."

At a recent breakfast meeting, one source said, no Laker would sit with Russell at his table. The source added that, in another instance, Russell came into the locker room and sat next to Lou Williams, who got up and walked away.

"It's bad," one team source told ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne. "It's about as bad as it can get. There were trust issues already. Now there's no trust."

Later in the conversation, while apparently still recording, Russell is heard telling Young, "I'm glad you told my video all that."

"Huh?" Young says, turning his face toward Russell before the video cuts off.

Jordan Clarkson, Nick Young Accused Of Harassing Female Empowerment Activist

Mar 21, 2016 7:27 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are investigating allegations that Jordan Clarkson and Nick Young sexually harassed two women Sunday night in Hollywood.

One of the women is Alexis Jones, an activist trying to stop athletes from committing sexual harassment, sexual abuse and domestic violence.

Jones, an author and co-founder of the nonprofit I AM THAT GIRL, which aims to empower women, said in an interview Monday that the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of La Brea and Melrose avenues in Hollywood.

Jones said that after dinner, she and her 68-year-old mother stopped their vehicle at the intersection, where a Jeep with four men pulled up alongside them. According to Jones, the men inside the Jeep began making "vulgar, sexual" gestures toward her mother.

"She was super rattled. That's the truth. It scared her," Jones said. "We were in a small car, and they were in a big Jeep, and it was a bunch of big dudes. They're leaning out of the car and making vulgar, sexual gestures. My mom was really shocked. That immediately turned into sobbing."

Around 8:30 a.m. Monday, Jones said she received a call from Black, who she said apologized on behalf of the Lakers. Jones said Black suggested the possibility of Jones speaking to the Lakers about the topic she has spent the past two-and-a-half years traveling the U.S. to speak to collegiate athletes about: respect and treatment of women.

"I've been inspired by how the Lakers have responded," she said.

Black said Lakers head coach Byron Scott is aware of the situation and has addressed it with the two players.

Phil Jackson, Knicks Have Mutual Out After 16-17

Mar 15, 2016 11:20 AM

Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks have a mutual out clause after the 16-17 season.

Jackson asked for the out clause for the summer of 2017 because of the possibility of the work stoppage, but both sides also understood a no-fault out clause would also benefit both parties.

There is a possibility of Jackson returning to the Los Angeles Lakers depending on what happens with Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak.

Kobe: Phil Jackson Knows More About Basketball Than New York Put Together

Mar 14, 2016 12:00 PM

Kobe Bryant believes fans of the New York Knicks need to keep the faith when it comes to Phil Jackson's plans for the franchise.

"People in New York just need to trust the fact that he knows more about basketball than any of them put together," Bryant said after he and the Los Angeles Lakers lost to Jackson's Knicks on Sunday night.

Bryant later added: "In my opinion, he's the greatest coach in any profession. Ever."

Jackson said Friday that he hopes to continue to build the Knicks roster via free agency this summer. The club will have at least $18 million in cap space.

"We definitely [have] ideas about how to help this team. I don't think there are secrets or mysteries," Jackson said. "We have agents calling us up all the time trying to sell their players to us, so I think we're going to do just fine in free agency."

Byron Scott Had Smoother Relationship With Irving Than D'Angelo Russell

Mar 11, 2016 12:56 AM

Byron Scott was head coach for Kyrie Irving and Chris Paul as he is this season with the Los Angeles Lakers for D'Angelo Russell.

Scott has maintained that Russell isn’t as polished offensively as Irving was and isn’t as ready to lead as Paul was with New Orleans.

Scott said his relationship with Irving was without much conflict, unlike that with Russell.

“Not really,” Scott said when asked if he had to push Irving to work harder. “He was like how a lot of young guys are today: It’s hard to get him in the gym, but then it’s hard to get him out. He was one of those guys that didn’t necessarily love being there early to work at 10:30 [a.m.] for practice, but when practice was over at 1 [p.m.], he was on the floor for another 45 minutes. He wasn’t an early riser, but once he got going, he really enjoyed the process of going out there and working on his craft.”

Steve Kerr On Lakers' Loss: We Got What We Deserved

Mar 6, 2016 8:53 PM

The Golden State Warriors lost 112-95 to the Los Angeles Lakers on national television.

The game between the Warriors (55-6) and Lakers (13-51) represented a matchup between teams with the most-lopsided winning percentages this late in any NBA season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

“Well, that was fun,” Steve Kerr said sarcastically to open his postgame news conference. “It’s actually pretty easy to explain. It’s the NBA, and if you’re not ready to play, anything can happen. We weren’t ready. …

“We got what we deserved.”

“It was a bad performance all the way through,” Stephen Curry said. “… It was just one of those days that you want to avoid at all costs.”

Kobe Bryant To Begin Ramping Up Appearances In Home Games

Mar 3, 2016 11:40 AM

Kobe Bryant will begin trying to play in every Los Angeles Lakers' home game for the rest of the season, even if it means a limited performance.

Bryant has prioritized road games so far this season to give fans of those cities a final opportunity to see him play.

Bryant is battling a sore shoulder that might force him to sit if it was not his final season.

“At Staples, here, I'm going to have to start ramping it up and get out there and playing,” Bryant said on Time Warner Cable SportsNet, “because it's almost a wrap. But at the same time, I don't want to do something towards the end and have the shoulder pop out again and I'm on the surgery table again or something like that. We don't want that. I just need to be smart, and appreciate the time I have left.”

The Lakers have 14 of 20 remaining games at home as well as a designated road game at Staples against the Clippers.
