Luke Walton agreed to a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $25 million over five seasons.

Walton was the only candidate interviewed by the Lakers.

Walton emerged as one of the NBA's most coveted head coaches with how he led the Golden State Warriors on an interim basis when Steve Kerr was out.

The Los Angeles Lakers moved quickly on hiring Luke Walton as head coach after their interview with him on Thursday in Oakland.

The Lakers had plans to interview Ettore Messina at some point next week between Games 2 and 3 of the San Antonio Spurs' series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, but they canceled following Walton's interview.

Walton and Messina quickly emerged as the top candidates for the Lakers' job after they fired Byron Scott.

Luke Walton has agreed to become the team's next Head Coach.

Walton currently serves as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors and will take over the Lakers once Golden State's season is over.

Walton played for the Lakers from 2003-2012.

Warriors Give Permission For Lakers To Interview Luke Walton

The Golden State Warriors have granted permission to the Los Angeles Lakers to interview Luke Walton.

Steve Kerr said the Lakers will be able to meet with Walton now that the Warriors have advanced to the second round.

"We told Mitch that he's perfectly welcome to talk to Luke as soon as the series is over and we have a little break," Kerr said of Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak.

Walton is considered a prime candidate for the Lakers' vacancy.

Walton spent the vast part of his playing career with the Lakers.

Buss "didn't know" and "didn't anticipate" Sunday's news.

Byron Scott compiled a record of 38-126 in two seasons as the team's head coach.

Lakers Receive Permission to Interview Ettore Messina

The San Antonio Spurs have given the Los Angeles Lakers permission to interview lead assistant coach Ettore Messina.

Messina joined the Spurs' coaching staff in 2014 after previously coaching CSKA Moscow, Real Madrid, Benetton Treviso and Virtus Bologna. He also served as a consultant for the Lakers for the 2011-2012 season under head coach Mike Brown. Messina is also the current head coach of the Italian men's national basketball team, a position he previously held from 1993-1997.

It is unclear when the Lakers plan to interview Messina.

Lakers Fire Byron Scott

The Los Angeles Lakers have fired coach Byron Scott after they posted the worst record in franchise history in each of the two seasons since he was hired.

Scott had said he expected to be back a week ago, two days after the team closed its 2015-16 season with a win over the Utah Jazz, which gave the Lakers a franchise-worst 17-65 record.

Scott replaced Mike D'Antoni as head coach.

The Lakers did not fire Scott with his successor in place.

DeMar DeRozan will be a free agent this offseason coming off a career year with the Toronto Raptors.

DeRozan was the ninth overall pick in 2009 out of USC.

"He's enjoying his last days in Toronto because he'll leaving for Los Angeles in a few months anyways," said Smith of DeRozan.

While Smith doesn't specify which team from Los Angeles he predicts will sign DeRozan, it is presumably the Los Angeles Lakers given their needs on the wing and available cap space.

Both Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal have publicly talked wanting Bryant to join their panel.

It is not clear if producers are trying to add Bryant for the current playoffs or for a long-term position.

Bryant is still evaluating his retirement options.

TNT's studio is in Atlanta while ESPN's NBA studio show is based in Los Angeles.
