Jeanie Buss: Phil Jackson Won't Leave Knicks To Join Lakers

May 31, 2016 10:42 AM

Jeanie Buss confirmed Phil Jackson won't be leaving the New York Knicks to join the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jackson reportedly has an opt-out clause after the 16-17 season.

"No. To visit, yes ... but in terms of basketball, he's committed to New York for many years," Buss said Monday on ESPN Radio's Beadle and Shelburne Show. "He's building something there. He has a mission, he's on that journey to get the team back to where he believes it can be and it will be. He's a former Knick ... he loves New York, he loves the fans, he wants to make them proud.

"In terms of the Lakers, we have a front office. They're putting together a team ... they have a vision. I'm excited to see what the future holds for us. So, to answer your question ... no, there's no plans for Phil to come back here."

Lakers Not Waiting On Warriors' Run To Hire Assistant Coaches

May 7, 2016 5:31 PM

Mitch Kupchak confirmed the Los Angeles Lakers canceled their other interviews after meeting with Luke Walton.

“With the openings in the NBA at that time,” Kupchak said, “and the openings that we thought might come about once we finished the interview, we decided quickly that he was our first choice, why wait? Just get it done.”

Walton will remain an assistant coach with the Warriors until their playoff run is over.

“We’re hoping for Luke that he continues to play until mid-June,” Kupchak said. “Certainly we’d also like to have him here as soon as possible.”

Kupchak said Walton will not wait until after the Warriors season to fill out his coaching staff.

Jordan Clarkson Believes Luke Walton Decision Positively Impacts Future With Lakers

May 7, 2016 5:28 PM

Jordan Clarkson says the Los Angeles Lakers' decision to hire Luke Walton will make a big impact on his free agency decision. Clarkson will be a restricted free agent.

The Lakers figure to play a more uptempo style under Walton.

“It really impacts it a lot,” Clarkson told ESPN.com on Friday in a phone interview when asked about how the hiring affects his free-agency decision. “That style of play fits me, as well as the other guys. I definitely want to stay here in L.A. and be here. I said in my exit interview, I don’t want to be that guy who bounces around from team to team.

“I want to be here in L.A. -- a place where I can call home -- and leave a legacy. The hiring makes it even better.”

Byron Scott Regrets Not Playing Vets More Due To Firing

May 6, 2016 10:26 AM

Byron Scott was surprised by the Los Angeles Lakers' decision to fire him and wishes he would have coached differently.

Scott wishes he would have played his veterans more to chase wins even though the Lakers were rebuilding during the final seasons of Kobe Bryant.

“If I knew this was coming, I would have played Lou [Williams], Brandon [Bass] and guys like that a whole lot more,” Scott said, referring to his veterans. “They gave me the best chance to win.”

D'Angelo Russell and Julius Randle were in and out of the starting lineup.

“Young guys are young guys.” Scott said. “You hope sooner or later with all those guys that the light bulb comes on and you get that ‘aha moment’ where they can say, ‘I got it and understand what you’re talking about it. We had those moments very sparingly.”

Scott recalled the conversation he had with Mitch Kupchak when he was informed of the Lakers' decision.

“‘We’re not going to pick up your option,’” Scott recalled. “‘This is very tough. But you’ve been in this business long enough.’”

During the interview process, Scott was told the Lakers' patience would extend beyond two seasons.

“I wasn’t going to sell myself; that’s just not me. But I did bring up the fact that I thought I had at least another year with our discussions that this would be hard the first two or three years,” Scott said. “They asked if I was all right with it and I said, ‘Yeah I am. But are you guys?’ The answer back to me was, ‘Yeah, because we knew this would be tough and it would take a while.’”

Lakers Expected To Pursue Festus Ezeli

May 5, 2016 5:38 PM

The restricted free agency of Festus Ezeli will be one of the most interesting offseason developments.

Ezeli is a talented young center but he's had injury issues and has never played extended minutes on a consistent basis.

Ezeli could command a three-year, $50 million deal.

“Obviously there are health issues you’re worried about,” one general manager told Sporting News. “So I don’t think you’d want to go beyond three years. But he still has a lot of upside and he can get better in a bigger role.”

Ezeli is averaging 15.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks on a per-36 basis.

The Los Angeles Lakers are one team who will have interest in Ezeli. With Luke Walton joining the team as head coach, there will be a level of comfort with signing Ezeli.

Jim Buss Believes Lakers Already Have 'Perfect Number Of Young Guys'

May 4, 2016 5:38 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers are hoping their lottery pick remains in the top-3 so it won't automatically be conveyed to the Philadelphia 76ers.

But there is some doubt as to whether the Lakers would like to keep the pick or trade it away for a proven player.

“Right now, I think our young guys are the perfect number and we will add solid veterans,” said Jim Buss.

The Lakers' young core consists of D'Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson.

With significant cap space, the Lakers can conceivably sign a free agent and trade for another top level player.
