Mayo Not On Trade Block

Nov 27, 2010 11:12 AM

It has been assumed that O.J. Mayo is on the trading block now that the Grizzlies are bringing him off the bench, but Marc Stein of ESPN.com reports that isn't the case.

Memphis made Mayo available to Golden State in a deal that would have included Monta Ellis back in February.

Of course, the Grizzlies could change their stance during the three months leading up to this season's trade deadline.

Mayo Fine Coming Off Bench

Nov 26, 2010 4:50 PM

Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins has decided to bring young guard O.J. Mayo off the bench.

Hollins acknowledged that bringing Mayo off the bench was something that Memphis discussed back in September.

"I've been thinking about how we can balance our lineup," Hollins said. "Everybody talks about how bad the bench is. We weren't getting anybody on the bench that was a true, pure scorer so I've always been trying to figure out what's best to do.

"O.J. is a good shooter and he does have a scoring mentality. When you put him with the (second) unit maybe they'll develop an identity."

Mayo came off the bench against the Pistons on Wednesday night and he'll do the same on Friday against the Warriors.

Grizzlies rookie Xavier Henry is the new starter at shooting guard.

"You just have to be patient and stay enthused," Mayo said. "I just want to help my team in any way possible."

Mayo, Randolph Were Benched For Tardiness

Nov 21, 2010 6:05 PM

O.J. Mayo and Zach Randolph did not start Saturday against the Heat because they arrived late for the Grizzlies' shootaround.

Instead, Memphis started rookie Xavier Henry and Darrell Arthur.

"I'm just trying to let everybody know, it's about the team," coach Lionel Hollins said. "Guys have to represent, follow the rules, and respect your teammates."

Mayo and Randolph sat out the entire first quarter.

"It's a one-time thing," Hollins said. "If they had been this way before, they wouldn't have started before. I could live with coming in a minute or two (late) and we really haven't started. But we'd already gotten into running the other team's plays. So it was a little bit more serious."

Rudy Gay Beats Heat At Buzzer

Nov 21, 2010 9:52 AM

Grizzlies swingman Rudy Gay pushed his team to a victory over the Heat on Saturday night with a fade-away jumper at the buzzer.

The shot gave Memphis a 97-95 win and allowed Gay to make up for a mistake that allow LeBron James to tie the game with 5.5 seconds left.

"I don't care if James Naismith was guarding me, which would be scary because he's dead," said Gay, who hit the shot over James.

"I really don't care who's guarding me to be honest with you."

Law's Days May Be Numbered With Memphis

Nov 17, 2010 5:24 PM

The Grizzlies are expected to soon have free-agent guards Patrick Beverley and Garrett Temple in for a workout.

The workouts could be a bad sign for Acie Law, who is playing under a non-guaranteed contract that allows Memphis to waive him by Dec. 8 without any obligations.

Zach Randolph Pushing For Extension With Grizzlies

Nov 16, 2010 4:56 PM

Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph is pushing for a contract extension from the team.

"I want to do it now," Randolph told FanHouse. "Sooner the better. If we don't do it now, there are a lot of other teams out there who like me."

Randolph, now in his 10th NBA season, is in the final year of a contract paying him $17.3M.

He is coming off his first All-Star appearance and has averaged a double-double in four consecutive seasons.

Grizzlies Hold Players-Only Meeting

Nov 16, 2010 4:54 PM

The Grizzlies were so disappointed with their play on Monday night against the Magic that they held a players-only meeting after the game.

"It's never too early to have a team meeting," said point guard Mike Conley. "The issues that we have as a team, being held accountable individually, we have to accept as a team."

Memphis thought they could contend in the Western Conference, but they are just 4-7.

"We should be further along at this point in the season. We're still working the kinks out, and it's kind of late in the game to still be doing that," said Rudy Gay. "That (meeting) is for us to talk about. Obviously, we are not playing well right now."

Rivers Was Surprised Tony Allen Wasn't Retained

Nov 13, 2010 10:41 AM

Celtics coach Doc Rivers was surprised when Tony Allen left the team to sign with the Grizzlies as a free agent this summer.

Allen had spent six years in Boston.

"No," Rivers said when asked if it was time for Allen to move on. "I don't think so. I think he should have stayed.

"Our relationship was phenomenal, and he loved our players. Just sometimes you get into these contract negotiations and they become personal, and, you know, it happens.

"But I literally had him circled as being back. I assumed he would be back. But there's nothing you can do about it now."

Rajon Rondo even tried to persuade Allen to return, but he was stonewalled.

"He didn't answer," Rondo said. "He declined all my calls. I tried to call him.

"I guess he made the decision that was best for him. He did what he wanted to do."

Agent Denies Zach Randolph Wants To Play For Pistons

Nov 10, 2010 4:52 PM

Raymond Brothers, the agent for Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph, has confirmed that his client hasn't discussed a contract extension with the team.

Brothers, however, denied an SI.com report that Randolph was interested in playing for Detroit.

"There's no truth to that rumor," Brothers said. "All Zach needs is a basketball and a court to play on to be happy. Zach's happy. That's nonsense."

A source familiar with the situation told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that the Grizzlies may be open to giving Randolph a three-year, $40 million extension.

Memphis and Randolph can negotiate throughout the season.
