Dave Joerger has listened to people say the Memphis Grizzlies might have dropped off among the elite teams in the Western Conference, but he maintains the team remains a contender.
“I feel like we addressed some of our team needs,” Joerger said. “We’ve added championship experience. We’ve added IQ. We’ve added shooting. We’re trying to grow from within. Those are all very positive. You better be ready to play in the West.
"Houston got better. Golden State got better. Minnesota got better. And the Clippers have definitely improved themselves. I also feel like we’ve kept up.”
Training camp starts in about five weeks, and Joerger wants his players to use last season's sweep in the Western Conference Finals as motivation.
“I don’t want the bad taste in our mouths (from being swept in the West Finals) to be forgotten,” Joerger said.
The Memphis Grizzlies have traded Tony Wroten to the Philadelphia 76ers for a future second round draft pick, according to a source.
Wroten averaged 2.6 points and 1.2 assists in 35 games as a rookie last season.
Wroten, 20, was selected No. 25 by the Grizzlies in the 2012 NBA draft.
Before signing with Turkey’s Trabzonspor, Memphis Grizzlies summer league forward Jack Cooley turned down training camp invites – including multiple partially guaranteed deals – from 10 NBA teams, his agent Adam Pensack told RealGM.
Cooley had received camp deals and some partially guaranteed offers out of the Portland Trail Blazers, Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers, Pensack said. Even so, the Turkish club gave Cooley an offer too lucrative to reject.
“He will play a lot against top level competition and will come back next year even more ready for the NBA,” Pensack said.
Cooley, a 22-year-old forward at 6-foot-9, averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds over six games with the Grlzzlies in the Las Vegas summer league. He averaged 13.1 points and 10.1 rebounds in his senior season at Notre Dame, going undrafted in the June NBA draft.
Cooley is expected to pursue a deal in the NBA next offseason.
The Memphis Grizzlies signed Nick Calathes to a two-year, $2 million contract.
A 6-foot-6 guard, Calathes averaged 13.4 points and 6.1 assists last season for Lokomotiv Kuban.
Calathes was drafted 45th by the Dallas Mavericks in 2009.
Elston Turner has accepted a lead assistant coaching position with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Turner was the No. 1 option for new head coach Dave Joerger.
Turner is known as one of the best defensive coaches in the NBA and was also in talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Turner has been a head coaching candidate for several openings over the past few years.
The Memphis Grizzlies remain in discussions with both Mo Williams and Beno Udrih.
The Grizzlies are seeking for depth at point guard.
Williams and Udrih are both seeking a deal above the veteran's minimum.
Antawn Jamison has received free agent interest from the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Charlotte Bobcats, according to a report.
Jamison wants to take time in making the best decision for himself, instead of rushing as he did last offseason.
Jamison believes he has two seasons left to compete at a high level.
