Derrick Byars is working out for the Memphis Grizzlies this week, according to a source.
Byars is also drawing interest from the New York Knicks.
Byars was acquired by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the in 2007 NBA draft and logged two games with the San Antonio Spurs in the 2011-12 season.
The Memphis Grizzlies will bring Tony Gaffney into training camp for a shot to make the roster.
The Grizzlies have 13 guaranteed contracts.
Gaffney has already signed this season with Telekom Baskets Bonn in Germany, but he was able to exercise an opt-out clause.
Gaffney played in summer league this offseason.
The Memphis Grizzlies acquired Kosta Koufos in a trade from the Denver Nuggets, and the Grizzlies had coveted the center for over the past year.
Marc Gasol has played major minutes in the last two seasons and Koufos is expected to be the backup.
There may also be times when Koufos and Gasol play together in the Grizzlies' frontcourt.
The Memphis Grizzlies have a strong frontcourt and stout defense, though their offensive efficiency needs to elevate for them to become a true title contender.
“I think an awful lot will look the same, there will be a tremendous emphasis on the defensive end,” Chris Wallace said. “If we can get the offense to rise up to the statistical rankings in the league, the way we have the defensive side of the ball, we’re going to be a hell of a team. That’s the final piece, an offense that is a top-10 offense. If you look at a team that has a chance to make a run at a title, you usually have a top-10 offense and top-10 defense.”
The Grizzlies were 21st in field goal percentage last season.
Marc Gasol is expecting Dave Joerger to increase the pace of the Memphis Grizzlies' offense in the upcoming season, and the two have spoken about a more up-tempo style.
"Coach Joerger has been there for six years," Gasol said. "He knows us pretty well. He knows how we play. He knows us personally, how we like to play basketball. He, of course, wants to push the tempo, which has been a problem for us, getting up and down the floor to score easy buckets. Because when you always go inside, everybody collapses on you in the paint and it's hard to operate down there.
"He's going to push the tempo and have a lot of plays from his pocket that he's told me [about]. And I'm excited about next season."
