Memphis Still Planning To Extend Randolph

Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph has gotten into some off-court trouble recently, but that won't change his future with the team.

Memphis still plans to negotiate a contract extension with Randolph.

He was mentioned in two separate police reports in a matter of 24 hours.

Randolph was implicated in an Indianapolis drug investigation and Los Angeles-area strip club fight, but has avoided all charges.

The only reason the Grizzlies wouldn't extend Randolph's contract would be money.

GM Wallace Expresses Support For Randolph

The Memphis Grizzlies released the following statement today from Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Chris Wallace, regarding media reports about forward Zach Randolph being implicated in an Indianapolis drug investigation.

?Since Zach Randolph joined this organization, he has been an active member of the Memphis community and embraced our core values of hard work and leadership. These qualities helped him develop into an NBA All-Star this season and guided one of the NBA?s youngest teams to a 16-game improvement.

?Zach?s continued commitment to the team has been evident the last couple of weeks as he?s been working out with members of our staff on the West Coast.

?Due to the ongoing police investigation, we do not feel it would be appropriate to comment further. Unless some other information surfaces, Zach remains a valued member of the Grizzlies family and Memphis community.?

Randolph Implicated In Marijuana Investigation

Zach Randolph has been implicated in an Indianapolis drug investigation.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a trusted police informant identified Randolph as a major marijuana supplier in Indianapolis, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

Narcotics officers were staking out a suspected drug house on Indianapolis' north side two weeks ago when they pulled over Arthur Boyd, 32, soon after he left the residence, near 75th Street and Binford Avenue, police said.

According to the affidavit, the Cadillac Escalade that Boyd was driving was registered to Randolph, and police found marijuana and ammunition stowed inside.

"One of his vehicles had what we call hidden compartments that contained suspected narcotics, that being marijuana," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell.

Based on information found in the Escalade, police later raided a northeast side storage facility, where they said Randolph rents four lockers.

The police informant is also quoted in the affidavit as having told investigators that Randolph was known to provide individuals with expensive cars and access to his Geist Reservoir waterfront home.

Randolph's attorney, John Tompkins, told 6News Wednesday evening that Boyd worked for his client, and that Randolph is not connected to any drug activity.

Grizzlies Still Want To Keep Rudy Gay

Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley insists that the team will look to keep forward Rudy Gay at all costs.

"Rudy is going to be out there. But here's the No. 1 thing: The option on what we pay him is mine," Heisley said of the soon-to-be restricted free agent.

"So when I say we're going to have Rudy next year, that's a pretty good indication that we're going to have him."

Heisley said at the start of last season that wanted to retain Gay and has maintained that stance.

Grizzlies Could Deal First-Round Picks

The Grizzlies own the No. 12, No. 25 and No. 28 picks in next month's NBA Draft, but they are open to dealing.

Memphis got the 25th and 28th picks from Denver and the Los Angeles Lakers, respectively.

"We'll be trying to trade from now through the draft," team owner Michael Heisley said. "If we can get an impact player, we might trade all three of (the picks). If we can't do that, then we hope to use those three picks to get an impact player."

Grizzlies Might Sign-And-Trade Rudy Gay

The Grizzlies could look complete a sign-and-trade involving restricted free agent forward Rudy Gay if they don't re-sign him outright.

Teams can discuss sign-and-trade scenarios prior to July 1, when the free agent signing period begins, as long as discussions don't include the player(s) involved.

Memphis hasn't discussed any scenarios, but a sign-and-trade remains an option.

Hollins Expects Grizzlies To Keep Rudy Gay

Memphis head coach Lionel Hollins expects Rudy Gay to remain with the team in 10-11. Gay is a restricted free agent this summer.

"There will always be a point where it?s not a smart business decision but I don?t know if it?s not a smart basketball decision," said Hollins. "

See, there?s a difference there. The basketball decision would be, where does that team go without him? Where does the fan base go without him? The business decision is what you just stated. From a basketball perspective, we?ve grown so much, we?ve invested so much in him to get him to this point after four years that it would just truly be a waste to let him walk and go to another team and now all of a sudden he blossoms into the player that everybody was hoping he could be."
