NBA Takes Teams Off Sales Market In Preperation For New TV Deal

Sep 10, 2013 5:51 PM

The NBA currently has no teams for sale and there are no plans to put any organizations on the market with a new lucrative television deal looming.

Several teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, have been pulled off the market recently. The Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors had also been previously rumored to be available.

"As we look at the coming domestic television deal and a great playoffs and Finals, there's a great buzz around the league right now," Adam Silver said Tuesday at the Bloomberg Sports Business Summit. "There aren't any teams for sale but if there were [the price] would be robust."

This is a significant departure from the last three-plus years when teams were selling both cheaply and quickly as nine different teams sold, many at reduced values.

Silver said Tuesday that for the first time there will be a committee of owners formed to oversee the TV contract talks.

It is believed that this new era of the league will give the owners more input with the commissioner.

"There's probably calls for more owner involvement than we've had historically," Silver said. "There's a new generation of owners who've become involved in the league. There's more a sense of activist owners ... these days led by Mark Cuban and others there are more full-time owners. It's a recognition that even for very wealthy people, it's a much larger percentage of their portfolio."

Newton Looking Forward To Expanded Role With Wolves

Sep 10, 2013 6:11 PM

Milt Newton was introduced as general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Newton was a longtime member of the Washington Wizards' front office reporting to Ernie Grunfeld.

Newton is looking forward to having a bigger role in the decision-making.

''My role will change in that, along with Flip (Saunders), I'll have an overall effect on the organization,'' Newton said. ''In Washington I was mostly in the personnel aspect of the organization. This is a very much more expanded role and I look forward to the task at hand."

''Milt's going to have a lot of authority and it frees our whole organization up to do a lot of things,'' Saunders said. ''It frees me up to do some things from a business perspective and he does have an expanded role from what he did have in Washington. He will have a huge voice.''

Flip Saunders Doesn't Expect Return To Coaching

Sep 9, 2013 12:37 PM

Flip Saunders is excited as part of the Minnesota Timberwolves' front office and the 58-year-old does not expect a return to coaching for now -- even including if and when Rick Adelman decides to stop coaching for good.

"I'm extremely happy where I'm at," Saunders said. "I never get into hypotheticals or what ifs, or what coulds, because you never really know. But I'd say when I'm just talking to people, I don't think I've been any more relaxed, happier. I'm in a perfect situation. I can really mold the team. I have a lot of input on how a team can be formed. And I don't think about coaching because Coach Adelman has been very open to me.

"We talk about a lot of things. We talk about defense. We talk about offense. It's always like we're having a coaching clinic. He's been very open to me that he wants me to be very open to him, and if I see things, don't ever feel slighted about giving him advice. I said I'll do that, but you have to coach the team the way you want to coach it ... so I don't see myself coaching right now."

Timberwolves To Use Camp To Decide On Derrick Williams' Future

Sep 5, 2013 11:06 PM

Derrick Williams has a team option on his contract for 2014-15 worth $6.3 million, and Glen Taylor believes the Minnesota Timberwolves will use training camp to decide whether they will exercise it.

"We'll evaluate his summer program, and how he looks coming into camp (which starts Oct. 1)," Taylor said. "I heard he is looking good."

Williams is working out in Los Angeles with trainer Gunnar Peterson, who says Williams is stronger and more balanced than a year ago.

Exercising Williams' fourth-year option is potentially enough to carry the Wolves over the luxury tax and not allow them to sign a free agent for the mid-level exception.

J.J. Barea 'Very Good' With Return To Mavericks

Sep 2, 2013 3:13 PM

The Dallas Mavericks pursued J.J. Barea at the beginning of the summer, and Barea has remained open to a return to the team with which he won the 2011 NBA championship.

"It's a great relationship with Mark Cuban. If they want to bring me back to Dallas, I am very [good] with it," Barea said. "But I'm happy in Minnesota. They're the ones that wanted me there, the ones that signed me for four years, so until they decide to trade me, I'm going to give them all my effort in the games."

Barea is confident that the Timberwolves can have a resurgent season as long as the core stays healthy.

"We have a great team," Barea said, citing Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love. "We also have Kevin Martin and new guys. Our problem is that we haven't been able to maintain ourselves healthy. If we stay healthy, we see ourselves in the playoffs."
