Looks Like Tim Thomas May Go West

Feb 28, 2006 5:57 AM

Look for Tim Thomas to go West after his buyout from Chicago, the Newark Star-Ledger is reporting, after Bulls GM John Paxson told agent Arn Tellem that he is determined to give Thomas the money he has left on his $14 million contract and allow him to become a free agent, but only if Thomas subsequently signs with San Antonio or Phoenix.

Although no agreement has been reached between Thomas and the Bulls, the latter have the upper hand with the March 1 deadline just around the corner.  Players who are not waived before Wednesday are not eligable for the playoffs.

So once again it comes down to money for Tim Thomas.  Does he take a lower buyout in exchange for full freedom in choosing a new team this season, or does he take all the money and become a Spur or Sun?

Carter Leaves Game With Hamstring Cramp

Feb 26, 2006 11:07 PM

The New Jersey Nets quickly went down after Vince Carter went out.

Carter left with a hamstring cramp in the first quarter and the Nets never recovered in a disappointing 101-91 loss to the Indiana Pacers, who got a terrific team effort in their first road win in nearly six weeks.

Peja Stojakovic scored 22 points and Fred Jones had 11 of his 22 in the fourth quarter for the Pacers, who pounced once Carter departed and never trailed over the last 34 minutes. Indiana is 2-1 vs. New Jersey this season.

"We had a whole scheme set up to double-team him," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "He goes out of the game, it certainly changes the complexion of the game for their team."

Four Teams Are Interested In Thomas

Feb 25, 2006 12:40 PM

The Bulls are working on a buyout, but general manager John Paxson said he doesn't want Tim Thomas go to an East team that Chicago is chasing. The Nets, Heat and Sixers are East teams with an interest along with the Spurs out west.

Thomas, who includes the Nets on his wish list, would have to be waived by Wednesday to be playoff eligible. Since they're over the cap, the Nets only can offer a minimum contract.

"I'm going to make Tim Thomas come here," Carter said.

Tim Thomas Wont Accept Less Than Full Amount In Buyout

Feb 23, 2006 9:12 AM

Tim Thomas has expressed interest in joining New Jersey, San Antonio, Miami or Philadelphia should the Chicago Bulls not be able to trade his expiring contract today and a buyout is reached, but Thomas has made it clear to North Jersey that a buyout will not come cheap.

Negotiations for a buyout have not been discussed between the parties, with Thomas still owed roughly $6 million of the $13.95 million he is contracted to collect this season.

Thomas said Wednesday that he wouldn't accept less buyout money than the sum he is owed to officially part ways with the Bulls.

"I hope it's not one of those things where I have to sit out a whole year," said Thomas. "I don't think it's going to get that far because I think they'll do what's best for their organization and we'll both move forward."

Marc Jackson Headed For Bobcats?

Feb 23, 2006 5:06 AM

The New York Post is reporting that Marc Jackson, the player the Nets acquired from Philadelphia after the Shareef Abdur-Rahim trade was rescinded, may be on his way out.

Marc Jackson was on the verge of being dealt to Charlotte, several league sources said. The move is designed to clear salary, not to import help. One source said the Nets may get back a player earning the NBA minimum salary.

NBA To Have Standard Policy For Physicals

Feb 22, 2006 3:30 PM

NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed to ESPN.com that the league had decided on a standard testing policy for players' physicals, though he would not confirm specifics.

"At the annual meeting of team doctors, a panel of independent cardiologists retained by the league gave a presentation of sudden cardiac death in athletes," Frank said. "The presentation included a cardiac screening protocol that, beginning next season, will be required of all teams. The hearts of large, elite athletes differ from so-called 'normal hearts' and the panel felt that having a standardized protocol -- informed by the most up-to-date-learning -- for examining these hearts is the best thing for the health and safety of our players."

Nets Not Expected To Make A Deal

Feb 22, 2006 1:18 AM

In recent years, Jason Kidd has been forthcoming and vocal when someone needed to suggest that the Nets needed more personnel.

So how's this for a twist: If the Nets don't make a trade before tomorrow afternoon's deadline, it's fine with him.

"It's quiet. Every year it is quiet for us," the captain said yesterday before the Nets' 89-85 victory over the Bucks. "We are going to stay pat, I guess, and be ready to rock and roll. I don't think we are doing anything. It is always quiet around us."

Kidd said this not only as a statement of fact, but as if the thought of changing the mix never occurred to him. Kidd knows the team could use more size, but when asked whether he wished management would make a change, his reply was a flat, "No."

"Ed and Rod know what they are doing," he said of GM Ed Stefanski and team president Rod Thorn. "If there is nothing out there that they feel can better the team, then this will be our team."

Buyout More Likely Than Trade For Thomas

Feb 19, 2006 2:11 AM

Should the Bulls be unable to unload Tim Thomas' expiring contract by the deadline, Chicago is expected to begin buyout talks to leave the forward eligible for another team's playoff roster by the March 1 cutoff.

Thomas said his preference at that stage would be to sign with the Nets (he lives about 10 miles from the arena) or Spurs.

Carter Gets Nod As All-Star Starter

Feb 18, 2006 3:54 AM

Detroit coach Flip Saunders, who commands the East team, will replace Indiana's injured Jermaine O'Neal with New Jersey's Vince Carter.

"The starters have always been a fan vote and Vince has probably gotten more votes for the last seven years almost than anybody that's played the game," Saunders said. "He had a lot of votes this year."

Among Eastern Conference players, Carter was sixth in the fan balloting with 1,065,464 votes.

Saunders considered Detroit's Rasheed Wallace and Toronto's Chris Bosh because they play the same position as O'Neal.

"I didn't go by, I'm going to take a 6-11 guy and put him in there," he said. "I just thought he would be a good guy to start. I didn't want to start any of my guys because I'm going to bring them all in at the same time."
