Nets Watching House And Rush

Jul 28, 2006 12:15 PM

The Nets almost have their roster for 2006-2007 set, but two free-agent names being closely monitored are Eddie House of Phoenix and Kareem Rush, who was waived from Charlotte last season after conflicts with coach Bernie Bickerstaff.

"We made no secret about it. If we can find a backcourt swing who can make shots consistently, we would like to find that guy," said GM Ed Stefanski.

Nets Not Eager To Overpay

Jul 25, 2006 8:53 AM

With the Nets already having one of the highest payrolls in the NBA, it is appearing unlikely that they will be major players in what remains in free agency. Lorenzen Wright, Reggie Evans, Melvin Ely and Eddie House are all on New Jersey's radar, but the price each player is putting on himself is a bit high for the club's blood.

"We knew we weren't going to be big free-agent players. ... It's survival of the fittest, and our improvement is going to have to be from within," said Lawrence Frank.

Boone Set To Miss 4-6 Months

Jul 21, 2006 5:26 AM

Nets president Rod Thorn revealed yesterday that first-round draft pick Josh Boone will be sidelined for four to six months with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the New York Daily News is reporting.

Boone underwent surgery to repair it on Wednesday and may not make his rookie debut until mid-January.

"We're actively looking for a big player," said Thorn. "We'll have to reassess what we were thinking about (free-agent wise) and see if we can find a bigger player to fill that spot."

Even though the Nets may officially re-sign Clifford Robinson today after his scheduled physical, Thorn has to add another big body to his roster. Initially, the Nets wanted to be thrifty when it came to spending their free-agent money this summer. They had hoped to sit back and sign veteran role players on the cheap.

The Nets will have to decide if they want to pay a little bit more than they would like for Reggie Evans or Lorenzen Wright - two big men who want a good chunk of the $5 million mid-level exemption which the Nets had hoped to use little or half of. The Nets like Charlotte's restricted free agent Melvin Ely, but the Bobcats have always overvalued the power forward.

No Contract Extension Plans for Nets and Carter

Jul 20, 2006 12:03 PM

After the Celtics extended Paul Pierce, Nets star Vince Carter appears to have been left without the same opportunity from the Nets.

Both Carter and Pierce had signed identical contracts five years ago, calling for a $15.1 million salary in 2006-07 and a player option ($16.3 million) the next season.

"There's nothing really going on regarding him," Thorn said. "I think Vince's plan is to play this year and see what happens."

Boone Undergoes Surgery

Jul 19, 2006 10:11 PM

New Jersey Nets rookie forward Josh Boone underwent successful arthroscopic surgery today, Wednesday, July 19, to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, Nets President Rod Thorn announced. The surgery was performed by Dr. Riley Williams III at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

Josh experienced some discomfort in his shoulder during our recent summer league in Orlando, said Thorn.  A subsequent MRI revealed the tear, and all parties involved felt that surgery was the most prudent option at this juncture.  We expect him to make a full recovery and to be a contributor to the team during the season.

Boone, the 23rd pick overall in the recent 2006 NBA Draft, will be in a sling for two weeks, after which time he will begin rehabilitation.  There is no timetable for his return.

In the recent Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando, the 6-10 Connecticut product averaged 10.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in five games.

Nets May Sign Arena Extension

Jul 7, 2006 7:21 AM

The Nets, whose lease at Continental Airlines Arena is to expire after the 2007-08 season, are discussing an extension through 2011-12 with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, a person familiar with the talks said.

The deal being discussed, which could be announced within the next week or so, would include escape clauses if the Nets' proposed downtown Brooklyn arena is completed before then.

The Nets hope to move to Brooklyn for the 2009-10 season, a goal that appears uncertain as the project moves gradually through the political process and faces opposition from some in the community.
