Andrei Kirilenko's desire to tend to a family matter in New York appears to make a trade from the Brooklyn Nets impractical for the foreseeable future.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers are two teams with a need for a player like Kirilenko that will need to wait to see if he becomes available close to the deadline.

The Nets have been working to find a team that’ll take the balance of his $3.3 million deal for the 2014-15 season, but a family matter that may require him remaining in New York until January or February could make it difficult for the Nets to trade him soon, sources said.

Kirilenko doesn’t have to accept a contract buyout and cost himself money. He can wait until the February trade deadline and become a low-risk addition elsewhere in the NBA.

“Andrei has all the power now,” one rival executive told Yahoo Sports. “He can say he likes the situation enough to play or not to play.”

Andrei Kirilenko has left the Brooklyn Nets for their roadtrip as he has received several healthy scratches in recent games.

"Source says situation between Kirilenko and Nets probably won't be resolved until he's on another team," writes Stefan Bondy.

Lionel Hollins told the media on Friday that he's unsure if or when Kirilenko will rejoin the club on their road trip.

Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN reports that the Nets have had preliminary talks with the Philadelphia 76ers about moving Kirilenko and Sergey Karasev. Kirilenko would likely be waived by the 76ers.

Jason Collins has announced his retirement from the NBA in a piece in Sports Illustrated.

"It has been 18 exhilarating months since I came out in Sports Illustrated as the first openly gay man in one of the four major professional team sports," wrote Collins. "And it has been nine months since I signed with the Nets and became the first openly gay male athlete to appear in a game in one of those leagues. It feels wonderful to have been part of these milestones for sports and for gay rights, and to have been embraced by the public, the coaches, the players, the league and history.

"On Wednesday at the Barclays Center, I plan to announce my retirement as an NBA player. The day will be especially meaningful for me because the Nets will be playing the Bucks, who are coached by Jason Kidd, my former teammate and my coach in Brooklyn. It was Jason who cheered my decision to come out by posting on Twitter: “Jason’s sexuality doesn’t change the fact that he is a great friend and was a great teammate.”

"Considering all the speculation about problems I might face within the locker room, Jason’s support was significant. It had been argued that no team would want to take on a player who was likely to attract a media circus from the outset and whose sexuality would be a distraction. I’m happy to have helped put those canards to rest. The much-ballyhooed media blitz to cover me unscrambled so quickly that a flack jokingly nicknamed me Mr. Irrelevant."

Andrei Kirilenko has fallen out of the Brooklyn Nets' rotation and was a healthy inactive for their game against the Miami Heat on Monday, saying he has "no idea" when he could receive playing time again.

“It’s tough, but there’s nothing I can do,” Kirilenko said. “I’m not the one making decisions, and it is what it is.”

Kirilenko has scored just three points in the 35 minutes he’s played across seven games. Kirilenko said Lionel Hollins has been open with him about his decision to leave him out of the rotation.

“I really appreciate it,” Kirilenko said, “but it doesn’t make things easier.”

Joe Johnson signed a six-year, $123.7 million contract with the Atlanta Hawks in 2010, but seriously considered the New York Knicks.

“Almost. Almost,” Johnson recalled of the Knicks’ contention. “The Knicks were the first team I met with.”

Johnson met with Mike D'Antoni, Allan Houston and James Dolan.

“We all met and talked and they had a great presentation. It was impressive. You know what threw me off more than anything?” Johnson asked. “Obviously there was the money difference, but they said, ‘You needed a place in Westchester and you needed a place in the city.’ They said you would roughly spend like $5 million.

“I was like, ‘aw, no,’ as opposed to being in Atlanta where I was already established with a solid team that was getting better every year. And I didn’t have to buy nothing or make any changes, and we had the arena and the practice facility in one place. It took me roughly 20 minutes with traffic to get there. Oh no. So then I never even imagined being in New York.”

D'Antoni isn't sure if the Knicks actually told Johnson that.

“I don’t know if we told him that,” D’Antoni said. “But he could afford it anyway. Obviously he made his choice, and for Atlanta, he was great.”

Kevin Garnett is interested in becoming an NBA owner when he retires as a player and would like to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves.

"I want to buy the Timberwolves. Put a group together and perhaps some day try to buy the team. That's what I want," Garnett said.

Garnett was drafted by the Wolves in the 1995 NBA Draft and spent 12 seasons there before being traded to the Boston Celtics.

The Timberwolves were valued at $430 million in January, according to Forbes Magazine. The next NBA television contract will be extremely lucrative and is expected to raise the price of the franchise. 

Garnett has made $315 million during his career and has also earned millions in endorsements.

"He would be one of the best owners in the NBA because he understands what the players need and he understands what it takes to be successful in the NBA,” Billy King told Yahoo Sports.

Glen Taylor told the Associated Press on May that he was looking to add a minority partner who would hold an option to buy him out. Taylor also made it clear he is committed to keeping the team in Minnesota.

Deron Williams and Stephen Curry on Monday were named NBA Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Nov. 3, through Sunday, Nov. 9. 

Williams led the Brooklyn Nets to a 3-1 week that included wins over the Oklahoma City Thunder and New York Knicks. He averaged 20.8 points (eighth in the conference) on .569 shooting from the field (seventh in the conference) and added 7.0 assists (tied for fourth in the conference).  

The Warriors posted a 2-1 week behind Curry, who along with the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant paced the league in scoring at 30.0 points per game.

The Minnesota Timberwolves spoke to Lionel Hollins in the offseason about their open head coaching position, but the team had uncertainty due to the Kevin Love trade.

Flip Saunders ultimately did not hire Hollins and became the head coach himself. Hollins was later hired as the Brooklyn Nets' coach.

“We talked a lot about it,” Saunders said. “I think Lionel is a great coach. … But that whole thing was because of the Love situation. There was too much of the unknowns. Lionel, he’s a team who took a team to a conference finals, I thought that he was going to go to a veteran type team, and I couldn’t guarantee him that would be this type of team.

“I wanted to hire a coach that knew what we had, and since we didn’t know what we had, we went in a different direction, but he was one of the two or three guys that we talked to and seriously considered.”

Hollins did not seem interested in discussing the situation.

“We did the interview,” he said. “They hired somebody else. That’s where it went.”

Mikhail Prokhorov isn't actively shopping his stake in the Brooklyn Nets, but he says he will listen to offers.

Prokhorov spoke to reporters on Monday for the first time since January.

“My position is that I will not give up control of the team,” he said. “But you know, I am quite happy when somebody sending me a nice offer without taking my control of team.

“I think, for the time being, nothing is imminent, but still I think it’s not bad just to listen.”

Prokhorov has rationalized spending more money than any other owner on his roster in recent seasons without actually contending for a title.

“We have a great development of our brand,” Prokhorov said. “Sports aren’t predictable and we need to be patient, but I will do as much as I can do just to reach a championship.”

Mikhail Prokhorov spoke to the media for the first time in nearly a year on Monday and addressed the departure of Jason Kidd from the Brooklyn Nets this past offseason.

“There is a nice proverb in English,” Prokhorov said. “Don’t let the door hit you where the Good Lord has split you.”

Kidd left the Nets to join the Milwaukee Bucks after reportedly seeking more power with the Nets.

“I think each side did what they thought was the best, and I like what we have now. I think our structure is optimal. We have a very strong, experienced coach, and a very strong GM in Billy King.”

Kidd led the Nets to a first round win over the Toronto Raptors in his lone season with the Nets.

“I think we shouldn’t get mad, I think we should get even,” Prokhorov added. “And we’ll see it on the court.”
