Jeremy Lin compared signing a three-year, $36 million deal with the Brooklyn Nets to investing in a startup company.
Lin was raised in Palo Alto, which is located in the center of Silicon Valley.
"The way I was thinking of free agency was like when you invest in a startup company," said Lin. "You don't necessarily look at the product right then and there. That is a big part of it, you're kind of betting on the founder a lot of times. You're betting on what that person is capable of doing, because sometimes as you go through the process, the final product is going to change a lot. That's very common in startups and I feel like that's kind of how this is.
"I'm betting on certain people, I'm betting on Kenny (Atkinson), I'm betting on Sean (Marks), I'm betting on myself, I'm betting on Brook Lopez. I'm betting on the way I feel. If I didn't feel like this has a chance to go where I want to go, then I wouldn't have signed up for it. Yeah, right now and last season if you look at last season, we weren't where we wanted to be, but it's a process and it's a challenge. I believe in what we're capable of becoming. We're not there right now, but we all know that, but that's the thing."
Lin signed a two-year, $4.3 million deal with a player option last offseason with the Charlotte Hornets.
The Brooklyn Nets met face-to-face with Dion Waiters earlier in the offseason when he was still a restricted free agent.
The Oklahoma City Thunder have since rescinded their qualifying offer to Waiters, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Waiters had a PER of 9.4 this past season along with a True Shooting Percentage of .492 in 27.6 minutes per game for the Thunder.
The Nets appear unwilling to change their stance on signing him since Waiters became unrestricted.
The Nets signed both Tyler Johnson and Allen Crabbe to offer sheets that were matched by their respective teams.

Luis Scola has agreed to sign with the Brooklyn Nets on a one-year deal.
Scola gives the Nets depth at power forward.

Jason Kidd continues to wonder what may have happened if he signed with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003 instead of agreeing upon a six-year, $103 million deal with the Nets. Kidd reflected on the decision after Tim Duncan's retirement announcement.
Kidd and the Nets were coming off two straight appearances in the Finals and only met with the Spurs in free agency. Kidd was ready to join the Spurs but his family wanted to stay in New Jersey.
"I thought I was going to be a Spur," Kidd said. "I committed when I was down there on my visit [to San Antonio].
"On my flight home, I think I got cold feet," Kidd continued. "And sometimes I have nightmares about that. Maybe I could have won a championship or two there. But I got really lucky with Dallas and won a championship."
Kidd eventually won a title in 2011 with the Dallas Mavericks.
"It is something that I sometimes regret," Kidd said. "I wanted to see if I could win a championship in San Antonio."
"When you talk about Duncan, you can't say that I got cheated [out of MVP in 2001-02]," Kidd added. "Just coming to second to him was an honor in itself. The biggest disappointment is maybe not joining him, joining San Antonio and trying to win a championship when I had the opportunity as a free agent."
