Paul Respects West's Decision To Test Free Agency

Jun 27, 2011 4:15 PM

New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul, one of the team's co-captains with long-time teammate David West, affirmed his affection for West and said he "respects" West's decision to opt out of the final year of his contract.

"D. West is like a brother to me," Paul said in a text message, "and I respect the fact that he made a decision that he believes in the best interests of himself and his family."

Paul, a four-time NBA All-Star, hasn't yet responded to a query about how West's decision might affect his future in New Orleans.

David West To Opt Out, Become Free Agent

Jun 27, 2011 9:29 AM

New Orleans Hornets forward David West confirmed Monday morning he'll opt out of the final year of his contract with the team and test NBA free agency.

In a phone conversation, West said he's not ruling out re-signing with the Hornets, but said "I want to win and win big."  West said his decision to walk away from $7.5 million in he last year of his contract was in his mind all along, even before tearing the ACL in his left knee on March 24.

He had reconstructive surgery on April 12 and has been rehabbing the knee twice daily at his off-season home Raleigh, N.C.

The Hornets could still offer West an extension before the current collective bargaining agreement expires at midnight on Thursday.

David West Still Considering Opting Out

Jun 24, 2011 3:32 PM

David West, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on March 24 and had reconstructive surgery on April 12, can walk away from $7.5 million next season and test the free-agent market. He must decide by June 30.

"I'm going to talk to (the Hornets) later in the day," West, a two-time All-Star, said Friday morning. "I just want to make sure I make the clearest decision possible as to what the next step in my career will be. I'll talk to them later, maybe throw some ideas around.

"I never really intended. . . . even before I got hurt, my whole intention was to wait and make sure the decision I made was a clear-headed one."

Ayers Promoted To Hornets Lead Assistant

Jun 14, 2011 10:08 AM

New Orleans Hornets Coach Monty Williams announced Monday during his basketball camp at the Alario Center that he will promote assistant coach Randy Ayers to fill the lead assistant position left by Mike Malone.

Ayers spent the past season as an assistant on Williams’ staff. He also served as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2003-04 season and has worked as an assistant for four teams.

“It’s an easy move for us because he’s been a head coach and a lead assistant,” said Williams, who was coached by Ayers in Philadelphia in 2002-03 when Ayers served on Coach Larry Brown’s staff. “But losing Mike is a tough blow for us because he meant so much to our program, teaching every day and his ability to communicate. You don’t just try to replace guys like that quickly.”

Demps Dismisses Paul For Westbrook Trade Rumor

Jun 4, 2011 1:37 PM

Hornets general manager Dell Demps laughed at Internet speculation there has been trade talks between the Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder regarding point guards Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook.

“(Thunder GM) Sam Presti and I, our offices used to be right next to each other, so we still text each other all the time, and I can assure you that has not been a conversation we’ve had,” Demps said, cracking a smile as he spoke to reporters.

Presti and Demps worked together in the San Antonio Spurs’ front office for two years before Presti took the job with the Thunder in 2007.

Paul can opt out of his contract after next season.

Harrison Barnes To Attend Chris Paul Elite PG Camp

Jun 3, 2011 4:16 PM

North Carolina sophomore Harrison Barnes is not a point guard. He does not play one on TV. But he will be one at the CP3 Elite Guard Camp that begins June 10 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Barnes is one of 17 college players invited to the camp, sponsored by Nike, that bears the insignia of NBA all-star Chris Paul and is designed to help high school and college players develop their point guard skills.

Most of the collegians who'll attend play the point guard position regularly, including Sporting News All-American Jordan Taylor of Wisconsin, developing Louisville junior Peyton Siva and Barnes' teammate -- the Tar Heels' real playmaker -- Kendall Marshall.

But like former Duke star forward Kyle Singler, who attended the camp last season, Barnes reached out to Nike to ask if he could be considered for the CP3 camp to help him improve his ballhandling and passing skills.
