Lance Stephenson Doesn't Regret Passing On Pacers' $44M Offer

Sep 21, 2016 12:46 PM

Lance Stephenson was asked how he decided to sign with the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason.

"I liked this team, and I see a couple young guys that I could potentially help and show all the other stuff that I learned from other places, from guys like Chris Paul, Paul George, Paul Pierce," said Stephenson. "Just teach them, and help them believe and show them the right way to work out there and what it takes to make it to the conference finals, and getting that work in every day."

With Jrue Holiday on leave to be with his wife during her health issues, Stephenson gives the Pelicans another ball handler.

"We were actually talking before then. I was just weighing my options. I figured this was the best team to go to, and I can help this program win -- help the young guys in here and also help me at the same time."

Stephenson was also asked if he regrets passing up the Indiana Pacers' five-year, $44 million offer in 2014 now that he's a free agent after only making a combined $18 million over two seasons.

"I don’t think I really chose not to go there," said Stephenson. "I don’t want to get into that, but it goes with the business. We never came to an agreement. I’m not going to say I turned it down -- I didn’t do that. But I don’t want to dwell on the past. I’m happy with the position I’m in now. I’m just gonna move forward and work hard and get back to that elite basketball player that I was."

Sep 15, 2016 1:40 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans are only guaranteeing $100,000 of Lance Stephenson's one-year, $1.22 million deal.

Stephenson found the market to be soft after the Memphis Grizzlies declined their $9.4 million team option on his contract. Stephenson signed a three-year, $27 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets in 2014.

The Hornets traded Stephenson to the Los Angeles Clippers last offseason but he proved to be a bad fit.

Jrue Holiday To Miss First Part Of Season With Wife Undergoing Treatment For Brain Tumor

Sep 4, 2016 2:23 PM

Jrue Holiday will miss the first part of the 16-17 season as his wife, Lauren Holiday, is treated for a brain tumor.

Lauren Holiday, 28, a two-time Olympic gold medalist for the U.S. women's national soccer team, retired last year in the prime of her career, in large part, to start a family with Jrue.

"Devastating," Jrue Holiday said of the diagnosis.

Lauren Holiday will undergo surgery for the brain tumor after she delivers their daughter as early as September.

"My family comes before basketball," said Holiday. "I'm obviously blessed to play this game and be in the position I am in, but my wife is the most important thing in the world to me. She comes before anything else."

Dell Demps and Alvin Gentry met with Holiday and his agent, Jason Glushon, in early August in Los Angeles to outline a game plan for their star point guard.

"The most important thing for Jrue to do right now is be with his wife and family," Gentry said in a statement. "Every one of our coaches and players understands what Lauren and Jrue are going through, and they know we're behind them 100 percent.

"We'll continue to do everything we can to support them and help them get through these hard times."

Doctors plan to perform Lauren's brain surgery about six weeks after the birth.
