Kenyon Martin Aims To Change Image

Feb 24, 2013 1:31 PM

Kenyon Martin knows he has built a reputation around the NBA, which caused him to be passed up as a potential signing throughout the season. Now, Martin is with the New York Knicks on a 10-day contract, hoping to use the deal to prove himself on the court and as a leader.

“People have misconceptions about me,” Martin said. “That’s why I’m here, to change those now.

“Does it come out wrong sometimes? Yeah, I’m the first to admit my timing and tact is not the best,” he said. “But are my intentions good? Absolutely. But I might have to work on that and learn to keep my mouth shut a little bit.”

Martin has been working out to get in top shape but knows it will take time for him to regain his basketball conditioning.

“The treadmill is a lot shorter than this court,” he said. “I think I’m in decent shape. But basketball shape and game shape are something that’s totally different. But I’m a vet. Throw me out there and I know when I can get my breaks. I’ve got fresh legs."

Expected Luxury Tax Teams: Lakers, Heat, Knicks, Nets, Bulls, Celtics

Feb 22, 2013 2:25 PM

The Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and New York Knicks are scheduled to pay the luxury tax this season.

The Bulls have never previously paid the luxury tax and were unable to shed salary at the deadline.

The Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs are less than $1 million away from the tax threshold.

The Warriors traded away Jeremy Tyler and Charles Jenkins on Thursday to get under the tax. Golden State has never paid the luxury tax in franchise history.

The Lakers will have the largest luxury tax bill, as they currently are nearly $30 million over the threshold, while the Celtics are over by less than $1 million.

Grunwald: Knicks Offense Must Evolve Over Remainder Of Season

Feb 22, 2013 5:48 PM

Glen Grunwald believes the New York Knicks will need to alter their offensive strategy over the remainder of the season.

"I think teams have adjusted to our offense a little bit," Grunwald said. "We need to evolve."

Grunwald is confident that the Knicks have the personnel to score from all areas of the floor.

"It’s a matter of putting them in the right situations," Grunwald said. "I’m very optimistic [Mike Woodson] is gonna’ get that right."

Grunwald also expressed concern about the Knicks’ defense, which has fallen to 19th in points allowed per 100 possessions and 22nd in opponent field-goal percentage.

"I think the players and coaches are working toward figuring why that is," Grunwald said. "Even at the beginning of the year, we weren't as good as last season when Woody took over as head coach. There is room for improvement on our defense, and I think everyone’s focused on trying to get to that point where we are one of the top defensive teams in the league again."

Knicks Unlikely To Make Trade

“They’re not even waiting on anything,’’ one person familiar with the Knicks’ thinking said. “It’s pretty safe to say they’re not making a deal.’’

The Knicks have expressed interest in Jermaine O’Neal and are monitoring Kenyon Martin, who is a free agent.

O'Neal could be a buyout candidate if the Phoenix Suns need an additional roster spot.
