Kerr Denies Giving Verbal Agreement To Jackson For Knicks' Job

May 31, 2014 10:17 PM

Steve Kerr denied giving Phil Jackson a verbal commitment to become head coach of the New York Knicks before backing out when the Golden State Warriors' job became available.

"We were very close, but we never agreed to a contract,” Kerr told the Daily News Saturday night before working Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals for TNT. "We didn't have a handshake agreement or anything like that. But I did think I was going to go there. And I think Phil and I both thought it was going to happen.”

Kerr and Jackson had many phone conversations about the Knicks and he admitted that he may have strongly intimated that he would accept the job.

“I’m not upset he expressed it that way,” Kerr said. “I’m OK with that. But in the end, Phil knew I wasn't quite comfortable and he didn't hold me to any of our conversations. That's what is great about dealing with Phil. There was no pressure on me to take the job. He reiterated to me, ‘You need to feel good about this. You need to make sure of it.' That's why he didn't make a fuss about it, when I wanted to speak with Golden State.”

Knicks Target Bucks, 76ers As Possible Trade Partners To Acquire Draft Pick

May 31, 2014 6:16 PM

The New York Knicks will attempt to trade for a second round draft pick by purchasing a selection.

Phil Jackson cited the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers are possible trade targets because those teams own multiple picks in the draft.

Jackson said the Knicks will not get in "a bidding war."

“Teams do sell draft picks," Jackson said. "If teams are willing to allow us to buy a draft pick for a player we want to have at a position, we’ll do it.’’

Jackson Advises Carmelo To Wait Until 2015 For Free Agency

May 30, 2014 11:51 AM

Phil Jackson advised Carmelo Anthony to wait until 2015 to become a free agent in order to allow the New York Knicks to be in position to pursue two "headline players."

Anthony has widely been expected to become a free agent this offseason, but he told Jackson that he would consider the idea.

Jackson said he is concerned that the Knicks could lose Anthony in free agency.

Anthony has never been a free agent in his career.

Rick Fox Interested In Knicks' Job

May 24, 2014 10:23 AM

Rick Fox was asked if he might have interest in the head coaching vacancy with the Los Angeles Lakers, but instead shifted the conversation to the New York Knicks.

"There are a number of open jobs," Fox said. "I've been looking and in conversations with Phil Jackson, in supporting his vision for the Knicks. I love the Lakers, obviously. They're a little unsure which direction they want to go in right now. I think you'll probably get a quicker answer out of New York.

"I'm hoping -- I keep saying to Phil Jackson -- he needs to coach the team. He's the best guy for it. He's the holy grail of coaches. If he needed my support in some way, it'd be hard to turn him down. Or if he needed me to step in and do the job myself, I'd definitely welcome that.''

Currently an analyst for NBA TV, Fox has never coached.

Kroenke Doesn't Forsee Scenario For Brian Shaw To Leave Nuggets

May 23, 2014 1:05 AM

Brian Shaw has said he is pleased to be the Denver Nuggets' head coach and has no plans to leave, and the team president reiterated the stance on Thursday amid speculation that the New York Knicks will pursue Shaw.

"Brian has said publicly – and privately to us – that his desire is to be here, and we feel strongly about him as our coach," Josh Kroenke said. "I don't foresee a scenario or circumstance where he's going to be anywhere but with the Nuggets next season."

The Knicks have yet to request permission to talk to Shaw.

Derek Fisher remains the frontrunner to be the target for Phil Jackson's coach on the Knicks. Fisher could also interview for the Los Angeles Lakers' opening.
