Knicks Considering Willie Cauley-Stein At No. 4

May 27, 2015 1:51 PM

The New York Knicks own the fourth overall pick and are largely dependent on what happens ahead of them, but they could still pick between several players.

The Knicks are looking strongly at Willie Cauley-Stein, according to two different sources.

The Knicks realize they need to improve defensively, which is why Cauley-Stein and Justise Winslow could be options.

Knicks Expected To Make No. 4 Pick 'Very Available'

May 19, 2015 9:19 PM

With the New York Knicks sliding down from No. 2 to No. 4, their pick is expected to be "very available" in potential trade discussions.

The Knicks were hoping, like most teams in the lottery, for a top-2 pick to draft either Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor.

With the Knicks still built around Carmelo Anthony and not owning their first round pick in 2016, they aren't interested in an extended rebuilding period.

Two of D'Angelo Russell, Emmanuel Mudiay and Justise Winslow are expected to be available at No. 4.

Marc Gasol Expected To Receive Free Agency Pitch From Spurs, Lakers, Knicks, Mavs

May 19, 2015 1:42 PM

The San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks all are developing proposals to present to Marc Gasol on July 1, according sources.

Gasol averaged 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.6 blocks while shooting 49.4 percent from the field in 81 games this season.

"He's the best player at his position in the league," Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said. "You make preparations if it goes in a direction you're not happy about. You're not going to lose sleep at night. It's not going to do any good. He's going to do what he's going to do. Not in the next two weeks are we going to send him a big thing of flowers and it's going to change his mind. [By then], the cement is dry.

"We'll make our last, 'Hey, this is what's important to us. What's important to you?' Things of that nature. But I've got to think his mind is 99 percent made up."

Karl-Anthony Towns Eyes Playing For Knicks' Franchise He Grew Up Watching

May 19, 2015 1:31 PM

Karl-Anthony Towns could end up with the New York Knicks depending on how the NBA draft lottery goes on Tuesday.

Towns, 19, grew up watching the Knicks.

“I’ve always been a Knicks fan,” Towns said. “I never was able to afford passes to the games. We were able to afford cable and got the MSG channel so I could watch every Knick game. It made me more of a fan because I could watch every big game.

“My best friend was a Nets fan so it made for a cool rivalry. My favorite player for the Knicks is a tie between Walt Frazier and Patrick Ewing, but I liked Patrick Ewing a lot. But I’ve never been to a Knicks game. I could never afford to go there.”

Towns averaged 10.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in just 21.1 minutes per game for a deep Kentucky team that advanced to the 2015 Final Four.

“It would be an honor and a privilege to play for the Knicks organization,” Towns said. “But wherever the chips fall, the chips fall. I just can’t wait to play basketball at the next level.”

Knicks Have Received 437 Games From Nine Potential Lotto Picks Since 2002

May 18, 2015 1:00 PM

The New York Knicks have an all-important lottery pick and there remains a chance of the franchise keeping the player that will be selected, which would actually run counter to their history.

The Knicks, however, could be interested in trading away the pick if it falls outside the top-2.

Dating back to the 2002 NBA Draft when they included Nene in their deal with Marcus Camby for Antonio McDyess, a number of their lottery picks have been traded in advance.

The Knicks kept Mike Sweetney and Channing Frye in 2003 and 2005, respectively, but the LaMarcus Aldridge and Joakim Noah picks were dealt in advance in the Eddy Curry deal, as were the Gordon Hayward and Dario Saric picks. The Noah pick was technically a swap with the Bulls that resulted in Wilson Chandler.

Sweetney was included in the Curry trade, while Frye was traded in 2007 for Zach Randolph.

Danilo Gallinari was drafted in 2008 and traded in February of 2011 in the Carmelo Anthony trade, while Jordan Hill was traded in his rookie season in 2010 to clear extra cap space.

In total, the Knicks have only yielded 437 games from their nine potential lottery picks since 2002.

The Knicks have already traded away their first round pick in 2016 to the Raptors, which was already part of a pick swap with the Nuggets.

Knicks Intrigued By Frank Kaminsky

May 15, 2015 8:34 PM

Frank Kaminsky believes he impressed Phil Jackson during an interview on Thursday at the NBA Draft Combine.

Kaminsky is projected to go closer to No. 10 in the draft, well beyond the New York Knicks' draft slot as they can select no worse than fifth.

“I’m 22 years old and I get treated like I’m 65 going into the NBA,’’ Kaminsky said.

The Knicks could conceivably trade down to pick up Kaminsky and another asset.

“I know they run the triangle and I think I can do well in that system,’’ Kaminsky said of the Knicks. “But the organization has to make the decision, not me. New York is a great place, storied history. I wouldn’t mind it at all. Carmelo Anthony is obviously one of the superstars — one of the best in my generation. To play alongside him would be a cool thing.’’

Phil Jackson Unhappy By Return Of Isiah Thomas To MSG

May 15, 2015 8:26 PM

Phil Jackson has expressed concern over the presence of Isiah Thomas at Madison Square Garden.

Thomas was recently hired as president of the New York Liberty of the WNBA. Thomas continues to have a close relationship with James Dolan.

There has been speculation that Thomas could eventually replace Jackson to run the New York Knicks again.

“He’s not happy about it but what can he do about it,” said one Garden official, who requested anonymity. “This is just the start of it.”

The WNBA Board of Governors has yet to approve Thomas’ ownership and a person familiar with the process believes it will be rejected.

Jackson has little experience when it comes to running the draft and free agency and the feeling is that Dolan will again use Thomas as a consultant.

“He’s an excellent judge of talent and I’m confident that he will put all of his energy and experience into making the Liberty a perennially competitive and successful team,” Dolan said in a statement last week.

Jackson is entering the second year of a five-year deal to run the Knicks.
