Alvin Gentry Wants Pelicans' Head Coaching Job

May 21, 2015 2:28 PM

Alvin Gentry has emerged as a leading candidate for the New Orleans Pelicans' head coaching job.

Gentry interviewed on Monday with Mickey Loomis and Dell Demps and he believes the opportunity to coach Anthony Davis would be career defining.

''He's more than interested,'' the source said Thursday morning. "He really believes that this is a job that would certainly define him as a coach because of the opportunity that it creates.

"Certainly this is one of those jobs that you feel is probably as good as any job available right now, no question. Even if there were no other jobs, it would still be the best."

The Pelicans are seeking a replacement for Monty Williams and have also had interest in John Calipari and Tom Thibodeau.

Gentry is currently an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors.

John Calipari Interested In Pelicans' Job

May 19, 2015 1:11 PM

John Calipari has interest in becoming head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, according to a source close to the coach.

Calipari recently signed an extension with Kentucky.

Calipari would have the chance to reunite with Anthony Davis and Tyreke Evans if he returned to the NBA with the Pelicans.

there have been exploratory conversations between Calipari and the Pelicans, but it doesn't appear as though the franchise could meet his financial demands.

League sources said the Pelicans are willing to pay around $4 million to $5 million per season for Monty Williams' successor. Williams was fired last week after five seasons at the helm.

But Calipari makes about $8 million annually and recently agreed to a one-year contract extension through 2022, which he hasn't yet signed.

The financial aspects are a major issue for Calipari, while he also would seek input on the Pelicans' roster.

Calipari released the following statement via Twitter:

"Even though Anthony and Tyreke are in NOLA, I have no interest in the Pelicans or any other job. I have a great job and I'm happy at UK."

Bulls Unwilling To Let Tom Thibodeau Leave Without Compensation

May 15, 2015 10:15 PM

Tom Thibodeau has no plans of stepping away from the $9 million owed to him by the Chicago Bulls over the next two seasons.

Both Thibodeau and the Bulls appear to prefer a separation this offseason.

Gar Forman and John Paxson, however, are not willing to fire Thibodeau and allow him to leave without compensation. The Bulls are not even prepared to engage in compensation talks until they have a commitment from a replacement that excites them.

Fred Hoiberg is the Bulls' preferred choice, as he's seen of being capable of fixing their offense. Hoiberg is only two years into a 10-year, $20 million contract at Iowa State.

"He can leave whenever he wants," one front-office source said. "Why now?"

Tom Thibodeau, Pelicans Have Mutual Interest

May 14, 2015 11:39 PM

With the Chicago Bulls eliminated from the playoffs, the future of Tom Thibodeau becomes a pressing question for several franchises.

Thibodeau is widely expected to not return as head coach of the Bulls.

The Orlando Magic are interested in Thibodeau and sources say there is mutual interest with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Thibodeau has two seasons and $9 million remaining on his contract with the Bulls.

"Until they tell me I'm not, I expect to be here," said Thibodeau.

Derrick Rose said he would like Thibodeau to return.

As one source close to the situation puts it: "Thibs is gone. They know it and he knows it."

Pelicans Fire Monty Williams

May 12, 2015 1:02 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans have fired Monty Williams.

Williams led the Pelicans to a playoff berth this season and were competitive in the first round against the Golden State Warriors despite losing in four games.

Williams became head coach of the Pelicans in 2010 and bridged the gap between Chris Paul and Anthony Davis. Williams had one season remaining on his contract.

Dell Demps will now be able to make his first hire of a head coach as general manager, as Williams preceded him with the franchise.

“Making a decision like this is never easy and is never done hastily, especially when you are dealing with a person of Monty Williams’ character. We thanked Monty for the tremendous work and commitment he made to our organization and the development of our young players, specifically Anthony Davis,” said Mickey Loomis. “While we continue to work towards improving our roster, we decided that now was the time to make this decision. We wish nothing but the best for Monty in the future.”

Loomis is the Pelicans' executive vice president and is also general manager of the NFL's New Orleans Saints.

Pelicans Senior Vice President of Basketball Operation/ General Manager Dell Demps added, “We thank Monty for his dedication and leadership to our team both on and off the court. He served as a great role model for our young team and worked tirelessly towards the development of all of our players. We endured a lot of change during the past season and Monty was a steady influence in our locker room. We wish him and his family nothing but the best.”
