With Murray Signed, Is Evans Next?

Sep 28, 2005 9:26 AM

All that remains for Sonics GM Rick Sund is to sign forward Reggie Evans, who was hoping to cash in on the Sonics' surprising 52-30 record like former teammates Antonio Daniels and Jerome James, who received $30 million deals from Washington and New York, respectively.

At this late stage of the free-agency period, it's unlikely that Evans will receive a lucrative offer, and chances are growing that he might gamble much like Radmanovic and Murray and opt for a one-year deal. The gamble for him would be greater because there isn't much of a market for 6-8 forwards who can rebound and defend but have limited scoring abilities.

Seattle SuperSonics General Manager Rick Sund announced today that Ronald ?Flip? Murray has signed a one-year qualifying offer to remain with the Sonics.

?We?re excited to have Flip back next season,? said Sund. ?He adds explosiveness to our backcourt and is versatile enough to play both guard positions. In his two-plus years with the Sonics, Flip has been a prolific scorer and possesses one of the league?s best crossover dribbles.?

Last season, Murray?s third in the NBA, he averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game in 49 games. He was originally acquired by the Sonics on Feb. 20, 2003 from the Milwaukee Bucks along with Ray Allen, Kevin Ollie and a conditional first-round draft choice.
