Brooks Pleased With Fisher's Chemistry Transition

Mar 29, 2012 10:40 AM

Derek Fisher has been working to find a comfort level with his new teammates of the Thunder.

“The thing that really impresses me is he comes in and does his work,” Scott Brooks said. “He's really professional. He's thorough. He's diligent in his work. He's always early. He gets his time in before and after practice. He's not just sitting down and grabbing guys (to come) over. You can't do that. There's always a grace period, a comfort level that guys need and that he needs with guys.”

Brooks added that Fisher has been subtle in expressing his thoughts.

“He's talked to the group at times,” Brooks said. “He's not a big talker, but what he says is very important. Those are words our guys need to hear and they need to continue to hear. He's not like grabbing guys left and right (and saying), 'Come on and listen to this story I'm about to tell you.' He's a class act. We appreciate having him around.”

Kentucky Learned Value Of Teamwork From Summer Scrimmages Against Pro Players

Mar 29, 2012 10:36 AM

Kentucky played together for the first time during summer pickup games with NBA players, with the most extensive visit coming from the Oklahoma City Thunder, which brought most of its roster to Lexington for nearly a week.

The Wildcats struggled early on.

“They came out here and just tried to kill us, really,” Doron Lamb said. “They weren’t taking it easy on us — especially Kevin Durant. Every time he got the ball, he tried to shoot it. And he was talking junk.”

“It think it helped start us off knowing we needed each other,” Terrence Jones said, “because if we did it one by one, we were going to get destroyed by those players. We had to help on defense, had to do something on offense to free each other up or we weren’t going to win.”

By the end of the Thunder's visit, the Wildcats were holding their own and carrying a new confidence that this season might be as special as fans hoped.

“We were pretty excited about that,” Darius Miller said. “That’s when we knew we had a pretty good team.”

“We figured out how good we could be,” Marquis Teague said, “if we were unselfish.”

“We started winning those games and beating some of the best players in the world — just because we were doing it together,” Jones said. “We knew from that point on we were going to have to do it together.”

Summer Workouts Bond LeBron, Durant

Mar 26, 2012 10:42 AM

LeBron James and Kevin Durant worked out together for five straight days last summer at the University of Akron.

“Monday through Friday, twice a day, and it was one of the toughest weeks that we’ve both had as far as workouts,” James said. “But it was some great work, and we got a lot out of it.”

James credits those workouts for part of the reason why he is having one of the best seasons of his career.
James and Durant enjoyed a strong friendship during the workouts.
James believes Durant has emerged as more of a leader this season.

“We respect each other, and it’s always great to see a friend of yours do well,” James said.

Davis Patterns Shot-Blocking After Ibaka

Mar 25, 2012 1:57 PM

Anthony Davis has been studying the shot-blocking skills of Serge Ibaka, who leads the NBA in blocks per game (3.3) and block percentage (8.8).

“I started to watch Serge Ibaka from the Thunder,” Davis said. “He’s a great shot-blocker, and I just try to see what he (does) to block shots in the NBA. It’s very hard to guys block shots in the NBA because guys are so talented, and I think he does a great job of doing so.”

Davis leads all NCAA players in blocks per game at 4.5; his 13.8 block percentage is second among players averaging at least 20 minutes.
