Gary Payton Considered Leaving NBA After Frustrating Rookie Season

Aug 29, 2013 12:20 PM

Gary Payton came close to leaving the NBA after a frustrating rookie season under K.C. Jones with the Seattle SuperSonics.

Payton was the No. 2 overall pick in the previous draft and played just 27.4 minutes per game as a rookie.

Payton was convinced by his father and agent Aaron Goodwin to return to the Sonics instead of leaving the game or forcing a trade. Jones was fired 36 games into the next season and replaced by George Karl and assistant coach Tim Grgurich.

“If we wouldn’t have changed coaches,” Payton said, “I would have probably said, ‘Yo, you know what? I want to end this. I don’t want to do this anymore because I’m not happy.’ If they would have stayed with the same coach, I would have probably just shut it down. They would have tried to trade me or I would have told them I don’t want to play there anymore.

“I went to my agent, I went to my father, I just said, ‘I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m good enough to play in this league. I’ve got a coach who wants to play me in the first and the third quarter. He has no confidence in me.’ They told me the same thing. ‘You’ve got to stick it out. You’ve got to be the guy who you’re supposed to be. You’re tough. You’re this.’ My father was like, ‘Are you crazy? If you quit, I’m gonna get in your (body).’ Stuff like that. He’s like, ‘It’s going to be better. You’ve got to dedicate yourself to it.’ As soon as coach Grg came there, I changed my whole mentality. I went back to the guy that I was at Oregon State and the guy that I was in Oakland.”

Payton retired after the 2006-07 season.

Kendrick Perkins Working Hard In Offseason To Turnaround Career

Aug 12, 2013 1:19 PM

Kendrick Perkins has been working hard this offseason in turning around his career after a regular season and playoffs in which he often struggled.

Perkins underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee last month.

“I've been working, man,” Perkins said. “Been in the gym and basically just working more in the weight room on my explosiveness and touch around the basket, hook shots and stuff like that. I've been shooting a lot of jumpers, making sure I make 300 a night. I'm just trying to prepare.”

Aug 12, 2013 12:28 AM

Kevin Durant scored 63 points in the Jamal Crawford Summer Pro-Am game in Seattle.

Durant hasn't played a game in Seattle since his rookie season before the Sonics relocated to Oklahoma City.

"I just want to say I miss you guys," Durant told about 3,000 fans, many in Durant's old Seattle SuperSonics jersey. "Thank you for the warm welcome. I can't wait to come back."

"He reached out to me to come perform before in front of you guys," Crawford told the crowd at Seattle Pacific University. "He loves Seattle. He took his own jet. He spent a lot of money to come up here and perform in front of you guys."

Durant: Thunder Understand Business Side, 'Know We Have A Really Good Team'

Aug 11, 2013 1:42 AM

The Oklahoma City Thunder lost Kevin Martin in free agency and did not sign a big name player, and Kevin Durant knows everyone throughout the organization understands the franchise's salary situation.

“People that really knew, as far as our money situation, knew that we couldn't sign anybody too big,” Durant said. “We got myself, Russell (Westbrook), (Kendrick Perkins) and Serge (Ibaka) all locked in on big contracts so it's kind of hard to sign (someone). Everybody wants us to get the biggest free agents, but it's kind of hard to do that with the money that we have (committed) and the tax and the new CBA.

"So it was kind of difficult. But we knew the business side of it. But we know we have a really good team.”

The Thunder have more than $53 million committed to Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka and Perkins next season.

Kevin Durant Hoping Thunder Can Attract Free Agents In Future

Aug 11, 2013 1:25 AM

Kevin Durant confirmed he reached out to recruit Dorell Wright and Mike Miller in free agency, but both players signed elsewhere.

Still, Durant is hopeful the Oklahoma City Thunder can draw players in the coming offseasons.

“I texted those guys and let them know that it was no hard feelings if they didn't want to come to Oklahoma City, which is cool with me because those guys got to make decisions for their families,” Durant said. “Hopefully down the line we can get some players to come play for us.”

The Thunder signed Ryan Gomes and brought back Derek Fisher in free agency.

Jack Cooley Rejects Partially Guaranteed NBA Deals For Turkish Team

Aug 11, 2013 12:34 PM

Before signing with Turkey’s Trabzonspor, Memphis Grizzlies summer league forward Jack Cooley turned down training camp invites – including multiple partially guaranteed deals – from 10 NBA teams, his agent Adam Pensack told RealGM.

Cooley had received camp deals and some partially guaranteed offers out of the Portland Trail Blazers, Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers, Pensack said. Even so, the Turkish club gave Cooley an offer too lucrative to reject.

“He will play a lot against top level competition and will come back next year even more ready for the NBA,” Pensack said.

Cooley, a 22-year-old forward at 6-foot-9, averaged 15 points and 9.2 rebounds over six games with the Grlzzlies in the Las Vegas summer league. He averaged 13.1 points and 10.1 rebounds in his senior season at Notre Dame, going undrafted in the June NBA draft.

Cooley is expected to pursue a deal in the NBA next offseason.
