Dion Waiters Has Never Felt More Comfortable, Calls Thunder 'Brotherhood'

Oct 30, 2015 10:23 AM

Dion Waiters said he's never felt more comfortable than he is right now during his NBA career, calling the Oklahoma City Thunder a "brotherhood."

Waiters played 21 minutes and had two big buckets in the fourth quarter in Oklahoma City's opening night win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Waiters is eligible for a contract extension before Nov. 2nd.

“We're always together,” Waiters said. “There's always genuine love, not just on the court but off the court, also. I think that plays a key role in everything in our success on the court.

“I've never been a part of a team that did that as a whole, as everybody. That's great for me.”

Donovan Trying To Allow Thunder To 'Play In Space'

Oct 28, 2015 2:52 PM

Billy Donovan isn't actually installing a whole new offensive system with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"For me, it's not so much a whole new offensive system as much as it's concepts," Donovan said. "Putting these guys in concepts. Trying to help them move the floor so they can make plays and have space to play in. But I don't think the concepts those guys are playing in are foreign to them, or they've never seen them before. I just think my job as a coach is to try and help them move the floor."

The Thunder finished last in assists per game in 2012, yet they also reached The Finals.

"New system, new coach," Durant said. "Feels like a new era of basketball.

"He's running more sets, I think," Durant said of Donovan's offense compared to Brooks'. "He's put in different packages for guys at different positions. Scotty did a great job of moving the floor and allowing his iso players to make plays, and I think Billy is doing that, too, but it's a little bit different. We're moving around a little bit more, moving from side-to-side a little bit more.

"In Scotty's defense, though, as players, we should have done a better job of producing ourselves -- moving the ball, moving our bodies," Durant said. "[Now], we just get more conscious of it every day, and it's preached to us every day."

"I think and feel like my job as a coach is to move the floor for those guys in actions and things that we're doing to help and create some space for them to play in," Donovan said. "I've always been a ball-movement, player-movement coach, where we want to extra pass, want to move the basketball. That said, we also have two of the best one-on-one offensive players in the NBA, so there's a balance on getting them the ball where they can play in some isolations, whether that's in post-ups or on the elbow.

"I don't think it's anything where someone's going to watch something and say, 'Geez, this has never been done before in the NBA.' I don't feel that way at all," he said. "All I'm trying to do is trying to create opportunities for those guys to play in space and to be who they are and put them in positions to make some decisions and reads."

Durant: Billy Donovan Running More Sets, More Movement In Offense

Oct 19, 2015 12:04 PM

Kevin Durant has begun to open up about the differences between Billy Donovan and Scott Brooks.

“He's running more sets, I think,” Durant said of Donovan's offense compared to Brooks's. “He's put in different packages for guys at different positions. Scotty did a great job of moving the floor, and allowing his iso players to make plays, and I think Billy is doing that, too, but it's a little bit different. We're moving around a little bit more, moving from side-to-side a little bit more.

“In Scotty's defense, as players we had to do a better job of producing ourselves — moving the ball, moving our bodies. We just get more conscious of it every day, and it's preached to us every day.”

Sam Presti: We've Created Organizational Momentum

Oct 18, 2015 11:24 AM

Sam Presti was asked if the atmosphere surrounding the Oklahoma City Thunder is refreshed with the players healthy and with new additions to the roster and at head coach.

“We have an ambition to build a great, enduring organization," said Sam Presti. "And to preserve that ideal and sustain our success, it requires us to continually stimulate progress and evolution without relinquishing the principles and standards that we are built upon. The combination of the transition to a new coaching staff, a healthy team with the benefit of seven years of experience together that is now entering its prime years, and some additions to our roster that fit our age horizon also help fortify the existing culture, and has created an organizational momentum that has everyone excited about the present but also very optimistic about the future.”

Presti was also asked if this season feels extra pivotal given Kevin Durant's 2016 free agency.

“We adopted an organizational approach in 2008 that is centered on being intentional about focusing on the present, not getting sidetracked by things we can’t control, and ensuring that all of our attention and intention is on embracing the season as it comes to us. We have seen every year as important, meaningful, and worthy of our full attention, and this season will be treated in the same fashion. This approach has served us well and our players have been excellent in terms of staying disciplined to this approach during the various circumstances we have encountered over the years.

“I really think that our standing as an organization is very much due to their ability to work in the present tense and place their attention on the quality of the work, not in the past or toward a future that has yet to arrive. If we continue to stay true to this concept, and I believe we will, it allows us to embrace the opportunities that this, like any season, presents and also allows us to continue to build an identity for the Thunder that will stand the test of time."
