Shabazz Napier Wasn't Expecting To Make 'Crazy Impact' With Heat As Rookie

Jan 31, 2016 1:07 PM

The Miami Heat traded away Shabazz Napier to the Orlando Magic one year after using a first round pick upon him in order to save on the luxury tax.

“I’ve always understood the business. I got traded on draft night [from Charlotte to Miami],” Napier said. “I never allowed it to push me away from my ultimate goal. It’s still the same as a young kid growing up. It was just to play in the NBA, it was to make an impact.

“I knew for a fact coming into my rookie year I wasn’t going to make the crazy impact I want to make as a young kid. It’s going to take time.”

Rob Hennigan: A Lot Of Teams Like Our Players

Jan 21, 2016 4:49 PM

Despite a difficult recent stretch to the season, Rob Hennigan is pleased with the progress of the Orlando Magic.

"Clearly our play over the past few weeks has been choppy and inconsistent, which has been frustrating. We’re continuing to search for that balance and rhythm that we had earlier in the season. We’ve shown we’re capable of doing it. Now it’s a matter of harnessing it consistently and executing the plan that Scott and his staff are laying out each night. I think the root of our frustration has been the inconsistent play, the up-and-down play, and that’s certainly not something to take lightly, and we need to get it addressed and put our finger on why that’s happening.

"But if you take a step back and look at the big picture, I’d say, by and large, we’ve made considerable progress. We’re a game out of the eighth seed in a much-improved Eastern Conference. We’ve played more games decided by three points or less than any team in the league. The next step for us is obviously doing a better job of closing out those games, and I think the key thing to remember is we’re doing it primarily with players in their first, second, third, fourth and fifth years. I looked up this stat the other day: Eighty-six percent of our total minutes played this season have been played by players with five years of NBA experience or fewer, and I believe that’s the second-highest percentage in the NBA behind Philadelphia."

Hennigan was asked how the Magic will treat the trade deadline.

"We’ll be very active in our discussions," said Hennigan. "It’s our job to constantly search for ways to improve the team. It doesn’t mean that those discussions will necessarily lead to action. We’re in a position where a lot of teams like our players, and so we’ll certainly have options. If something makes sense for us, we’ll be aggressive. But it needs to make sense for both the long and short terms. So we’ll stay equally as disciplined in our decision-making as we are active in our discussions.
