Bynum, 76ers Remain Cautious With Return Date

Oct 31, 2012 11:00 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers released a statement on Tuesday that state “while Andrew (Bynum) and the 76ers are both eager for him to resume playing as soon as possible, the team intends to act with caution as to the date of the return.”

Bynum has begun low-impact conditioning and will likely need several weeks to reach game shape.

76ers Want To Average Combined 40 Points From Three, Foul Line Per Game

Oct 30, 2012 10:38 AM

Doug Collins wants the Philadelphia 76ers to average a combined 40 points from the three-point line and foul line per game. During the 11-12 season, the 76ers averaged about 30 points per game in this area.

"Last year, we averaged about 93 a game," Collins said. "I looked at all the top teams in the NBA. The majority of them had a combination of three-point shooting and the free-throw line that got them up to that 100-point mark.

"I just felt it was a way for us, especially the way our team is constructed now - I think we made five and a half threes last year, we made 13 free throws. About 30 points a night. You start looking at the Spurs, and Oklahoma City and these teams, the Heat and these teams, how they space you out, they shoot the three, LeBron's at the line, [Dwyane] Wade's at the line."

76ers To Start Allen, Young To Begin Season

Oct 26, 2012 10:57 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers are likely to start Lavoy Allen at center and Thaddeus Young at power forward to begin the season.

Entering training camp, Doug Collins had expected to start Andrew Bynum at center and Spencer Hawes at power forward.

"I would have to say that's a great chance; that group has played very well together," Collins said. "We don't have great size, with Andrew and Kwame [Brown] being our two biggest guys. If that is the group that we will start with, we are going to have to really rebound that ball.

"But I like our speed, and I like our shooting and the way we push the ball. The guys have settled into a good fit."

Jrue Holiday, Jason Richardson and Evan Turner will round out the starting five.

76ers To Sit Bynum Until He Has No Pain In Knee

Oct 24, 2012 4:32 PM

Andrew Bynum continues to sit out training camp, putting off his debut with the Philadelphia 76ers in practice.

The 76ers will hold out Bynum until his knee is pain-free.

The team will hold five practices before their regular season opener against the Nuggets.

“It’s just a healing process,” Tony DiLeo said. “When it heals, it heals.”

DiLeo admitted the Sixers are being somewhat cautious with Bynum prior to the start of the 82-game regular season.

“I would play with pain,” Bynum said. “If it were up to me, I would play.”

Doug Collins declined to speculate when Bynum will be ready.

“I have no idea,” Collins said. “It’s all hypothetical. We’re not going to look over at (Bynum as) a lifeline. If this team feels like we can’t win without him, we won’t win.”

Oct 24, 2012 10:21 AM

Andrew Bynum is expected to join the Philadelphia 76ers for three days of practice on Wednesday.

Bynum was scheduled for one more injection in his right knee on Monday and his next one is expected at the All-Star break.

Bynum's conditioning will be a concern early in the season, but he is expected to be ready for the season opener.

Evan Turner Adjusting To Rigors Of Defending Small Forwards

Oct 17, 2012 10:27 AM

The most difficult part of Evan Turner's switch to playing small forward full time will come on defense.

Andre Iguodala has long been one of the best defensive small forwards in the NBA and Turner will be asked to defend the likes of Gerald Wallace and Paul Pierce.

"I just want to go out there and limit them as best as possible," said Turner. "I just have to get used to it. I haven't really guarded the top guys in a while. I want to get used to that challenge and learn little things. Pierce, he's going to get a couple of calls and get his points up. But I made him turn it over a few times [four] and I tried to attack him. Once I get the defense together [at the three spot], I think everything will be fine."

Turner worked hard on his strength and conditioning in the offseason.

"The big difference for him is that he's being played by a bigger player," Doug Collins said of Turner. "When he played at the 'two,' in many instances, he could go down to the post and have an advantage. Now, all of the sudden, he's going against a Gerald Wallace, Paul Pierce, and then it will be Carmelo Anthony. Evan is a guy who loves to play foul line and under. We're going to have to give him situations where he can use his ball skills and all. I still think he has a huge advantage anytime he rebounds the ball and pushes it into the open court; that's really when he's at his best."

Bynum To Receive Another Injection Next Monday

Oct 16, 2012 1:47 AM

Andrew Bynum will continue with conditioning drills as part of a previously announced precautionary measure related to the Orthokine treatment he received on September 15th.

Bynum will also receive a Synvisc injection in his right knee from Dr. David Altchek of the Hospital of Special Surgery next Monday. The injection of Synvisc – a natural substance that lubricates and cushions the joint – has been a routine procedure for Bynum during the previous two seasons and is unrelated to the bone bruise of the medial femoral chondyle of his right knee.

Bynum's Knee Improving, Treadmill Work To Begin Soon

Oct 15, 2012 10:02 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers are getting closer to having Andrew Bynum join them in practice.

"He said he's feeling better," Collins said. "I think he's set for another injection. Eventually they are going to pick up him running on the treadmill and that will be a huge step. We have a new anti-gravity machine that can take up to 80 percent of your body weight off so you can get over there and run and only be hitting on 20 percent of your body weight. It's a great machine especially for a big guy. You get your heart rate up. That's a big step for him to get on that treadmill and pick it up and hope his knee responds well."

Getting Bynum quicky in shape and acclimated to his 76ers' teammates will be a challenge for Collins.

"We've got some guys that I want to get in better condition," said Collins. "I think Andrew, in his career, has been a guy that has had to do a lot of conditioning without doing a lot of running. That's what happens, especially with big guys. You can't ask them to do a lot of running. He's gone through an injury before and he knows how hard he has to work. Then it's more of the timing and getting him into a rhythm and getting acclimated with our group and getting him used to playing. That's going to be a crash course."
