Bynum Remains Out Indefinitely, Approved To Elevate Training

Dec 21, 2012 6:27 PM

Andrew Bynum is still out indefinitely, but the bone bruises in his knees are healing and his weakened cartilage is improving, according to Tony DiLeo.

Bynum has also been approved by the Philadelphia 76ers to increase his activity level.

"The report is his knees are healing. He is improving," DiLeo told reporters. "He has been approved to increase his activity level. There is still no timetable. It all depends on how his body reacts to the increased activity."

The 76ers are waiting to see how Bynum feels during his elevated activity.

"If [Bynum's knees] react well, we go to the next step," DiLeo said. "Once his knees react in a positive way, we will go on to phase two. Obviously, it's not something we want to rush."

Evan Turner Adjusting To Big Minutes

Dec 19, 2012 11:10 PM

Before Wednesday's game, Evan Turner had logged 40 or more minutes in seven of his last nine contests. He admits the heavy playing time has been tiring to adjust to at times, but he's making strides in the right direction.

“I’m a little tired but it’s all good,” Turner said on Wednesday. “I just have to get used to it, but I’ll be fine. Guarding the little guards gets a little tiring. [Tuesday] in the second half, my legs were dead, but I just have to get my body used to it. I’m not mentally tired. In college, I went 40 a night, but you go every 3 days. This is something new, but I think I can handle it. I’ve got my body right. It’s mostly about mental toughness, and I’m fine there.

“It gets draining, but it’s a good problem to have. I’d be worried if I couldn’t do it, but I know that I can do it. It’s just making sure your body is ready for things. I think all this now is going to help me further along when January hits and all, and then for the rest of the season.”

Turner also came into the season around 230 pounds but has lost weight as the season's gone on and is now at 220.

"I want to be around 215, 220," Turner said. "You come in heavier before the season knowing you’re going to lose weight. I came in with a lot of heavy muscle weight from all the lifting I did over the summer.

“During the season, I’ll lift lighter weights with some reps, but it depends on the week. I keep up with my core during the season. I probably lift more than I should during the offseason, but it really helps me.”

76ers Remain Cautious With Holiday's Foot Injury

Dec 19, 2012 1:44 AM

Jrue Holiday missed his third straight game on Tuesday despite trying to convince the Philadelphia 76ers' staff that his sprained left foot has healed enough for him to return.

“If his foot is sore he’s not going to play, we’re just not going to do that,” Doug Collins said. “He’s too valuable and too important. The athlete, the player will always be the person who decides what they do. They know when they’re ready to play. The most important thing is mentally he knows he’s ready and can play and do what he has to do.”

Bynum Doesn't Regret Not Already Having Extension

Dec 17, 2012 11:11 AM

Andrew Bynum doesn't regret not signing an extension with the Los Angeles Lakers or even being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.

"Personally, I think they traded No. 1 for No. 2," Bynum said, conceded that Dwight Howard is No. 1.

Bynum said the only player from the Lakers he remains in contact with is Pau Gasol.

Bynum: Dwight Will Have To Adjust Playing With Kobe

Dec 17, 2012 11:08 AM

Dwight Howard has replaced Andrew Bynum as center of the Los Angeles Lakers following their offseason trade.

The Lakers beat the 76ers by a 111-98 final in the first game between the two teams this season.

"I think Dwight's a great player, but he's going to have to get accustomed to playing with Kobe, obviously, and not touching the ball every single play," Bynum said Sunday.

Bynum said Bryant helped "tremendously" during the early part of his career, but he wanted more touches in the post than what Bryant was able to share.

"Later I thought I was able to get the ball more and do more things with the ball, so I could definitely see how at the end it could stunt growth," Bynum said.

"Oh, for sure," Bryant said. "Because when you're playing with me, you obviously have to sacrifice something. It's the same thing with me and Shaq [O'Neal]. You kind of offset each other.

"When [Bynum] gets back and he's healthy, he'll come out here and he'll be the focal point of their attack. He'll be getting the ball more and you'll see big games from him more consistently."

Bynum's Knees 'Much Better'

Dec 17, 2012 2:25 AM

Andrew Bynum has yet to play this season due to his ailing knees, but he believes he's improving, especially compared to how he felt the last time he provided an update on his status.

"The update is that I’m feeling much better," Bynum said on Sunday. "From the beginning of this year, the state of the injury when I see the doctor hopefully I’ll be cleared for impact. Only the left knee (is hurting) the right knee is fine.

"It’s better from then, definitely improvement. ... Just shooting around a little bit with the guys. I’m starting to feel better."

Bynum, who will get his knees examined again on Thursday, admitted he's itching to get back on the court, seeing ways he can help a perimeter-based Philadelpa 76ers team.

"You want to play against your old team, always," Bynum said of Sunday's game between the 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers. "I’m just excited to play any game at this point."

76ers Inquire About Acquiring Starting Center

Dec 15, 2012 10:56 AM

With Andrew Bynum's return date remaining an entire mystery, a rival NBA general manager said the Philadelphia 76ers have made trade inquiries about acquiring a starting caliber center.

Bynum will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason and is likely to receive a max contract offer even if he doesn't play a single game this season.

"They got to be a little panicked now," one GM said. "They could get a really interesting deal for him. I could see them doing that."

Holiday Misses Practice, MRI Reveals Foot Sprain

Dec 13, 2012 1:50 PM

Jrue Holiday skipped practice on Thursday with soreness in his left foot.

X-rays did not reveal a fracture and an MRI detected a sprain.

Doug Collins plans to have Evan Turner or Nick Young play minutes at point guard if Holiday misses time.

Bynum Speaks To Media, Expects To Miss No More Than One More Month

Dec 10, 2012 8:20 PM

Andrew Bynum's right knee is feeling much better as he continues to sit out the start of the season with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Bynum's right knee was originally thought to be the lone reason why the start of his season was delayed.

"My left knee is still really sore, right knee is actually better, so that’s good,” said Bynum on Monday, who last spoke to the media on Nov. 25. “It’s just pain, just by walking around. Worst case scenario it’s another month.”

Bynum is scheduled to see doctors again on Dec. 20.

“Probably so, I’m not sure yet but probably," said Bynum about getting another MRI. "There’s nothing I can really do about it. It’s arthritis in the knees, cartilage is missing so that’s not going to regrow itself. Maybe in the future, in the next three to five years maybe there’s something out there that really does help but for right now it’s really just a waiting game.”

Bynum's comments suggest he chronically has bad knees.

“It’s just continuous pain,” he said of the left knee. “It’s just the bone bruise has to heal. It’s a mirror image of my right knee and my right knee took four months. I think we’re a little bit ahead of the curve because two months my right knee was swollen pretty big. So we’ve gotten the swelling out of that already (in the left) and I think it could be quicker.  If my left knee gets better and feels like my right knee then I’ll be playing."

Turner Has Earned Trust Of Collins

Dec 10, 2012 10:30 AM

Evan Turner has earned the trust and confidence of Doug Collins after frequently coming under pressure by him over his first two NBA seasons.

Turner attempted a total of 42 shots in the Philadelphia 76ers' games on Friday and Saturday.

"The thing I'm really proud about is Evan took the shot after missing four or five in a row," Collins said. "That's big-time. Evan is an amazing kid. He's always been a guy that needs to feel that everything fits. I really feel good about the way he's letting me coach him. I feel a real connection with Evan and it feels great. I don't know that Evan has trusted a lot of people in his life, but I hope he trusts me."

Turner admits his relationship with Collins has improved.

"It's definitely improved," Turner said. "It's just self-improvement on both ends. Obviously I was a little stubborn. Doug, every now and then, is stubborn a little bit. We've both been working on it. He's been working on his poise and just being more calm. I've been working on being more poised and it's definitely been helping."
