Sixers Sign Maalik Wayns To One-Year Deal

Jul 31, 2012 10:42 PM

Maalik Wayns has signed a one-year contract with the Sixers.

“It’s going to be a great experience for me, I’m just so happy and excited that things worked out the way they did,” said Wayns, who went undrafted in June. “I was confident that I was going to catch on with somebody. I knew I was going to play in the NBA. I just didn’t know where.”

Wayns averaged 11.7 points, 5.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds during the Orlando Summer League.

“I thought I played well in Orlando and there were rumors going around that a team or two were looking to sign me,” said Wayns. “But nothing happened. Still I never lost confidence that things would work out. The Sixers talked to my agent (Andy Miller) and we got a contract. I was thinking the whole time of just going to training camp and trying to make a team, really without any security. This is an added bonus.”

Kwame Brown To Start At Center For Sixers

Jul 18, 2012 10:47 AM

Doug Collins expects to start Kwame Brown at center while sliding Spencer Hawes over to power forward.

Collins was Brown’s first coach in Washington in 2001.

"I think when people view Kwame Brown they look at a guy who was a bust as the No. 1 draft pick in the NBA," Collins said, "and that's not what we're signing him for. I had him at that period in time when he was 19 years old, and I understand the pressure that young guy was under. I wish I could go back and be a better coach and a better mentor for him at that time."

Brown is set to play for his seventh team.

"Again, we're not asking him to come in here and be the No. 1 pick like back then," Collins said. "He's coming to a place where he feels good about. I think we're going to see the best of what Kwame has to offer."
