Collins Wants Hawes To Play Gasol-Like Role For Sixers

Aug 27, 2012 9:54 PM

Doug Collins envisions Spencer Hawes in a role that closely mirrors what Pau Gasol does for the Lakers.

“I want (Hawes) to play the Pau Gasol role with (Andrew) Bynum,” Collins said. “Both (Hawes and Gasol) like to play out on the perimeter because they can shoot the ball and are very good passers.”

Hawes posted five double-doubles and averaged 12.5 points on 62.7 percent shooting through the first eight games of last season before being slowed by a strained left achilles.

“The injury derailed me more than I thought it would at the time,” Hawes told reporters the day after the Sixers were eliminated by the Celtics. “I look forward to bigger and better things (in 2012-13).”

Collins Downplays Talk Of Coaching Team USA

Aug 26, 2012 11:03 AM

Doug Collins is generating plenty of talk about possibly becoming the next U.S Olympic basketball coach, but the Sixers coach said Sunday that's all there is to it right now.

"It's a tremendous honor that somebody would even throw my name out there," Collins said. "It's four years down the road and I understand in this business you hope you are an active coach at the time.”

Collins hopes to stay with the Sixers long-term.

"I am hoping that I am still active and I would like to coach four or five years in Philadelphia,” Collins continued. "I feel good about our team and I love my staff, what we are doing and where we are headed. The ownership, Josh [Harris], has been so good to me, so I feel really good about that."

Celtics, Spurs, Lakers, Warriors, Jazz Rated As Having Best Uniforms By Uni Watch

Aug 24, 2012 10:52 AM

Paul Lukas of Uni Watch ranks the uniforms of all 30 NBA teams, with the Celtics coming in first.

"The Rolling Stones, "Goodfellas," a Hershey's with almonds -- the classics are classic for a reason," writes Lukas about the Celtics. "That definitely applies to the Celtics' set. No goofy side panels, no extraneous bells or whistles -- just a perfect, vertically arched wordmark and a simple green-and-white color scheme. They rank atop this list despite sometimes wearing that black-trimmed alternate."

The Spurs, Lakers, Warriors and Jazz comprise the remainder of the top-five.

"The Raiders aren't the only team that knows how to wear silver and black," writes Lukas in regards to the Spurs. "In addition to the killer colors, the Spurs are also among the few NBA teams that have successfully incorporated a graphic image into their chest typography -- a small element that goes a long way."

Collins To Bring Thaddeus Young Off Bench

Aug 17, 2012 9:47 PM

Doug Collins expects to use Thaddeus Young in a reserve role next season.

“I’d like to continue to play Thad off the bench. I like his energy and his attitude he brings to us,” Collins said.

Collins is going to sit Young back in the rotation in part for matchup purposes against bigger lineups.

“From all the reports I got, he has his weight up to 229 pounds — he finished the season at 215,” he said. “The one thing with Thad is if you put him with a big guy that protects him, it makes him much better. So we think he’s going to be even better with Kwame (Brown) and Andrew (Bynum), who is going to be an even bigger help with the speed and quickness he plays with. Thad is going to be a big part of what we do.”

Dwight Howard Traded To Lakers

Aug 10, 2012 2:07 PM

The Magic have finally traded Dwight Howard.

Orlando has acquired Aaron Afflalo and Al Harrington from Denver, Maurice Harkless and Nikola Vucevic from Philadelphia, as well as Josh McRoberts and Christian Eyenga from the Los Angeles Lakers.

In addition, the Magic have also acquired five additional draft picks over the next five years. Orlando receives: a second round pick from Denver in 2013, a first round pick from either Denver or New York in 2014, a conditional first round pick from Philadelphia and a conditional second round pick from the L.A. Lakers in 2015, and a conditional first round pick from the L.A. Lakers in 2017.

The Magic traded Howard, Chris Duhon and Earl Clark to the Lakers, while sending Jason Richardson to Philadelphia. As part of the deal, Philadelphia has acquired Andrew Bynum, while Denver has acquired Andre Iguodala.

“A primary goal for our basketball team is to achieve sustainability while maintaining a long-term vision. We feel this deal puts us in a position to begin building in that direction,” said Magic GM Rob Hennigan. “In addition to the six players joining our team, we will be in a position to maximize our salary cap flexibility in the near future, as well as utilize the multiple draft picks we have acquired going forward.”

“Dwight Howard accomplished tremendous success on and off the court during his eight years in Orlando,” said Hennigan. “We wish him, Chris (Duhon), Earl (Clark) and Jason (Richardson) all the best in the future.”

“We’d like to thank Andrew for all he’s done for the team and the organization,” said Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak. “Andrew has been with us since we drafted him at seventeen years old and over the last seven years we have watched him develop into an All-Star player who has helped the team win two NBA Championships. He’s a special talent with a bright future. We appreciate all of his contributions and wish him well for the remainder of his career.”

“It’s not often you get the opportunity to improve your team by adding an All-Star player like Andre Iguodala,” said Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri said. “He’s an Olympian, a great defender and a great all-around player. We think he fits in really well with the type of system coach George Karl runs and the team we have here in Denver.”

"I’m excited to be heading to Denver,” Iguodala said. “I have a great relationship with (team president) Josh Kroenke, and I really respect what he and Masai have built with the Nuggets. They’re a great young team with an excellent coaching staff, led by Coach Karl. I also feel like I will really complement their system and roster, both offensively and defensively."

"We are very excited to welcome Andrew Bynum, one of the league's best, young centers, and Jason Richardson, a proven, respected veteran, to the Philadelphia 76ers," said Managing Owner Josh Harris. "As we stated from the outset, our ownership group is committed to exploring every option available to us in order to improve our team. This trade is the culmination of a very active off-season, one that we believe positions the Sixers for success this season and for many years to come."
