Joel Embiid Expected To Miss 5-8 Months

Jun 28, 2014 1:38 PM

Joel Embiid could miss his entire rookie season with the Philadelphia 76ers following surgery on his foot.

"I've seen reported by some 4 to 6 months [for Embiid to be sidelined]," Sam Hinkie said. "I don't know where they came from. That's not the number that I heard from the surgeon himself; it's 5 to 8 months. Guess what our approach will be? We will focus on the health of the player. We've had this discussion before. I don't want that to sound glib, because it's not. It is all that matters, the long-term health of the player. Will we be smart about that? Of course. Will we be thoughtful about that? I hope so. Will we be patient? Yes, yes. We will focus on giving him a chance to be as healthy as he can be, to have the kind of career that he can have. If he can be healthy - and we think there is a very, very good chance - if he can be healthy he can have a very productive NBA career."

Hinkie Saw Opportunity To Draft Embiid As Soon As Injury News Surfaced

Jun 28, 2014 1:35 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers would have likely drafted Andrew Wiggins had Joel Embiid not suffered a foot injury that will require surgery.

"I sniffed opportunity the moment it happened, the moment it happened," Sam Hinkie said on Friday. "The moment he got hurt, we thought we might get him, and we might be the organization with just the set of owners, and we might be the one to do it."

Embiid could miss his entire rookie season, just as Nerlens Noel did for the 76ers last year.

"I've seen reported by some 4 to 6 months [for Embiid to be sidelined]," Hinkie said.

Hinkie will continue to take the longview in building the 76ers.

"I've been here 13 months and I think we've been pretty consistent on what we've been focused on during that time," Hinkie said. "We want to add more and more talent and bring in more and more players and help us move forward with a goal of really trying to build something that can be championship-caliber. That doesn't happen overnight. We've been really open about that. We couldn't have predicted very well at 7:40 [Thursday] night what might have happened at the third pick and exactly who might be there and who might not, and we couldn't have predicted very well at all who was going to be there at the 10th pick at that moment, because there's so many factors in the marketplace that you have to figure out what they'd do to leave you with the set of options that you're left with. We focus on trying to make all the best decisions that we can, and we'll see where that takes us.

"We took a couple of 20-year-olds [Thursday] night. It's very clear that we're going to be growing with them. We talked about that with Michael [Carter-Williams] a year ago when we said that we felt like this is a player that we can grow with, and we still feel that way. We feel that he's a player that we can grow with."

76ers Expect Joel Embiid To Miss Up To Eight Months With Foot Injury

Jun 27, 2014 5:43 PM

Joel Embiid was projected by media reports to miss four to six months due to a stress fracture in his right foot, but the Philadelphia 76ers expect a five-to-eight month recovery timetable.

"I've seen reported some four to six months [for Embiid]," Sam Hinkie said. "That's not the number I heard. The number I heard from the surgeon himself was five to eight months.

"We will focus on the long-term health of the player. That's all that matters. Will we be smart about that? Of course. Will we be patient? Yes. If he can remain healthy, he can have a fantastic NBA career."

Embiid went to the 76ers with the No. 3 overall pick in Thursday's NBA draft.

76ers Give Up Trying To Trade Up With Cavs

Jun 26, 2014 5:54 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers are asking for the No. 3, No. 10 and No. 32 overall picks from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for the No. 1 overall pick.

The 76ers are widely believed to want to draft Andrew Wiggins.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the 76ers could select Joel Embiid if they keep the pick.

Wojnarowski reported approximately one hour before the draft that the 76ers are no longer pursuing a trade with the Cavaliers to move up.

76ers Making One Final Push To Trade Up For Andrew Wiggins

Jun 26, 2014 2:22 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers are making one final push to move up to the No. 1 overall pick via trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers to draft Andrew Wiggins.

Wiggins will almost certainly be off the board when the 76ers are scheduled to draft third overall.

The Cavaliers were previously expected to draft Joel Embiid, but his foot surgery has eliminated that possibility.

"They really, really, really want Wiggins," said a source.

76ers, Celtics, Lakers Most Likely To Draft Joel Embiid

Jun 26, 2014 12:28 PM

With concerns about his health, Joel Embiid is expected to fall out of the top two slots of the NBA Draft.

The Philadelphia 76ers at No. 3, Boston Celtics at No. 6 and Los Angeles Lakers at No. 7 are his three most probable destinations.

The Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz are unlikely to draft Embiid at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.

Embiid's agent has also been reluctant to share his medical information with particular teams.

Vonleh Likes Bosh Comparison, Would Be Comfortable With 76ers

Jun 25, 2014 7:05 PM

Noah Vonleh didn’t work out against the other top power forward prospects in this year’s draft such as Aaron Gordon or Julius Randle, but he still believes he proved to teams that he's worthy of a high pick.

"I just tried to go in there and show teams how hard I work, my versatility and teams were impressed with how I could switch it up, play inside-and-outside and face up,” Vonleh told RealGM of what he focused on.

Vonleh, who left Indiana after his freshman season, has been moving up draft boards over the past few months. Teams like his physical tools, rebounding and commitment to improving his game. He said multiple times Wednesday that he likes to be compared to Chris Bosh and that his outside shot has been a point of emphasis since the season ended.

"In high school and college I thought I was a combo four, but at Indiana I played the five,” Vonleh said. "I’ll probably start out as a stretch four in the NBA.”

Vonleh is rumored to be in play for the Philadelphia 76ers, who have the third pick. They also possess the 10th overall selection, but the Massachusetts native is unlikely to still be on the board when they make their second pick.

"They have a couple of guys from the Boston area -- Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel -- it wouldn’t be bad to go there and play with those guys,” Vonleh said when asked about the prospect of playing for Philadelphia where he would roam the paint with Noel.

"I think we could definitely complement each other," he added. "He would play the five and I could play the four. I think we’d work out good together."

Embiid In Play For 76ers, Magic; Unlikely To Fall Past Kings At No. 8

Jun 24, 2014 7:37 PM

Joel Embiid is currently slotted to go third overall to the Philadelphia 76ers in the most recent mock draft by Jonathan Givony at Draft Express.

The 76ers are planning a slow rebuild, so selecting Embiid with the possibility he sits out his entire rookie season as Nerlens Noel did in 13-14 is not an issue.

Draft Express reports that the Orlando Magic also represent a viable option to select Embiid with the No. 4 pick and the worst case scenario are the Sacramento Kings at No. 8.
